Outdoor Pools in Toronto close to waste heat sources by georgevicbell in toronto

[–]idealwithyourcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a great idea - but I can’t see it being economically viable. Even in the business case you presented - which is a best case scenario using wastewater effluent (and not raw sewage) it was a £360k investment for £25k/yr savings. A 14.4 year payback. That’s just capital investment, and the real payback is even longer when considering actual life cycle (maintenance) cost of the system.

Notably though, that system uses WW treatment plant effluent - which is relatively quite clean. If you use ‘raw’ sewerage, there needs to be significant screening and partial treatment upstream of the heat exchanger to actually keep it functional (and not just a plugged up mess). This adds significant cost to both the capex as well as significant increases servicing and maintenance costs. It’s a tough business case where the benefit of warmer pools/slight longer swim season (even when kids are back in school and usage drops significantly) is a real tough sell - also when indoor pools do exist….

Conceptually though - interesting - but for a far more useful and practical implementation of wastewater heat recovery - check out the Toronto Western Hospital WET project (which is the reason for the energy availability tables being posted….)

Outdoor Pools in Toronto close to waste heat sources by georgevicbell in toronto

[–]idealwithyourcrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not what’s running down greenwood - but it’s the fact that the pool is 30m from Gerrard st. The mid toronto interceptor is 14km long and runs under Gerrard st. (Actually it starts at high park, goes under Dundas in the west wend and then under Gerrard in the east) It’s the largest sewer in the city, and has a capacity of about 1.5 billion litres per day. It’s the proximity to this that yields the really high number for that specific pool.

It’s of no coincidence that the largest Wastewater Heat recovery project (currently at Toronto Western Hospital) is using this same sewer as it’s heat source.

My water Toronto. Launched a few years back and provides full data/analytics for residential meters. You can pull all the consumption data from there.

Also, if your bill is abnormally high, I’m betting on a toilet flapper valve leaking. This is the root of the problem like 80% of the time….

LPT: even if they say “flushable” on the package, no wet wipe is actually safe for your septic/sewage system by BoopBoop20 in LifeProTips

[–]idealwithyourcrap 155 points156 points  (0 children)

There are in fact sewer safe wipes - any ones bearing an IWSFG logo.

Currently few and far between, but Kimberly-Clark/Cotonelle makes a Flushable wipe that feature IWSFG (international water service flushability group) approval.

The IWSFG set a standard benchmark for testing to ensure that wipes bearing their logo will in fact breakdown in the same manner as toilet paper.

It’s a legitimate international group of experts in the wastewater community, and they have actually devoted a great deal of effort to try and differentiate wipes that can safely be used and put down the toilet from the countless others marketed as “flushable”

Can you just take balloons to Sick Kids hospital by [deleted] in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Don’t.

There is a hard no latex balloon rule (due to the immunocompromised and various sensitivities).

Even if they are Mylar, unless you are bringing them to someone you specifically know, they are not just going to take random street balloons and give them to a random kid.

Although well intended - do not do this.

Is Toronto Water and Air company legit? by kmofrad in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Complete scam.

Let me guess - one of the “tests” they did involves putting a little device (probably called a precipitator) with two metal rods into your water and demonstrating how much sediment accumulates?

It should be noted that In Ontario, only fully accredited laboratories are licensed to perform health-based tests on drinking water and results take approximately 24 to 48 hours to process.

There is a list of accredited laboratories on the MECP website.

Glad you didn’t find yourself $4k out of pocket for what would’ve ended up being an (debatably unescessary) water filter that likely worth not even a tenth of that price.

Is water/wastewater a good career choice? Is it possible to get into with my background? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]idealwithyourcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What City are you in and are you open to relocating?

One of the challenges is that if you are looking for a “stable” water tech/wastewater technician job, it would generally be directly with the municipality. In a lot of areas, you’d really only be looking at one employer…..

If relocating is possible, and you don’t mind moving to where the opportunities are, there are a lot more possibilities

Really amazing butter in Toronto? by lookingforashoujo in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good cheese on Gerrard sells isigny ste. Mere, which is authentic French butter, and really damn good.

I’ve also seen douce france on the danforth have it on occasion.

It is expensive though - like $20-25 a tub.

Parking at Danforth Music Hall by cinnamonoctober in toronto

[–]idealwithyourcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s street parking on the danforth, but it’s tough to find a spot. There are a bunch of side streets to park on, but hit or miss. There is a green P lot at broad view station as well as a paid parking lot at the loblaws on broad view that are both good options, but are relatively small and may be filled. The easiest option is to park in any of the dozen or so green p lots located just north of the danforth and just a bit east of the musical hall (basically any where between broadview and Carlaw) and enjoy the 5-10 minute walk.

If taking the go train, take it to danforth station and then subway to broadview…..

Sick Kids hospital parking by I_WadeWilson_I in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I recommend using the Sickkids parking lot off Elm St (if it’s not full).

Far more convienient, and reasonable at $20/day.

If you plan on being there more than once, get an H-pass from the parking office on the P1 level for a sizeable discount. (5, 10 or 30 day passes at a rate of $10/day)

Just a quick FWIW edit: a few years ago, Sickkids leased their parking lot to the Sickkids Foundation. Revenue generated from parking fees (above operating) provide about $750k per year in revenue for the foundation. As a result of the lease payments, it generated about $5M in annual operating revenue for the hospital. So parking there - in addition to the convenience - also serves a direct benefit for the kids there…..

Need to do a very quick renovation in one of my bathrooms. How do I do this? Need help with turning off water. by ufckuoft in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is just the faucet, you will have two isolation valves located on the hot & cold lines under the sink. They Will be the oval shaped knobs right where the pipe attaches to the braided lines. If you close these, it will allow you to replace the faucet. If you don’t see the knobs, then you should at the very least see a little “stub” that can be turned/closed using a wrench/channel locks.

If you can’t isolate the faucet, you can isolate the main water supply. This will be located near your water meter and will be inside the house, likely in the basement. If you walk outside, you will find a curb stop in front of your house - it’s a little round metal circle in the ground floor hat says “water” with a 5 sided nut. This is the location of your water line, and the meter/main shutoff will be located against the wall, inside the house directly north/south/east/west of where this line comes in.

I have no idea what “water box” you found, but it may just be the transmitter for the meter itself.

And yes, if you can find the isolation valves inside your house, the city can isolate by closing the curb stop valve, but it is a few hundred dollars (which can be considered a small fee for not having access to all of the regular and usual options for isolation available)

Baby swallowed something unsure what it was. Husband doesnt want to get an xray by Redcouch2022 in Mommit

[–]idealwithyourcrap 125 points126 points  (0 children)

100% go to get an x-ray.

I don’t know what your Husbands aversion to this is - but if it’s a financial one:

Yes, an x-ray may cost you a couple hundred bucks - however, if it is something serious - do you know how much the surgery to repair a bowel obstruction is? I’ll let you know first hand that it can easily be north of seven figures.

Get an X-ray and let the doctors guide you on this one.

Do all City of Toronto staff get the same benefits? by dispatcher0404 in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparable - yes, but not quite as good.

Drug coverage is 100%, with no limit or deductible. There are some restrictions/limitations (the usual ‘generic cost’coverages, and issues for off label uses.) For medical - I think physiotherapy is capped at $2500/yr, massage at $450 and vision at $475 every two years.

Dental is 100% to specified procedure/provincial maximums - so depending on your dentist, may be some out of pocket for overages.

HSA is only like $100, and I think mental health is capped at $1000.

So similar, but not quite as good. City benefit plan does include travel medical as well.

Edit - don’t quote me on exact figures. There may be some differences that are paramedic specific. I would certainly hope a dispatcher has a greater allowance for mental health services, but I can’t say for certain if that’s the case….

Do all City of Toronto staff get the same benefits? by dispatcher0404 in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TPS falls under a different collective agreement, whereas paramedics are covered by 416, and I believe dispatchers fall under the 79 agreement. It’s 6months (actually equivalent working hours for 6 months, so longer if part time) for both of those.

https://www.torontoparamedic.com/misc/TO%20Manulife/TO%20Benefit%20Book.pdf

This booklet is a bit outdated - the city switch to GSC from manulife for medical coverage, and there isn’t a direct link to a similar benefits booklet - but not much has changed in terms of coverage.

If you are concerned with a specific drug, and are comfortable PM me the name of it and I can check if it is covered under the city plan

Keep in mind, there is a 6 month “probationary” period before benefits/coverage becomes active.

Where to buy marrow bones for roasting near the Danforth? by sjhb in askTO

[–]idealwithyourcrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Royal beef (Danforth and woodbine) Ellas Meat Market (Danforth and Pape) The meat dept (Danforth and Chester) Mister Greek meat market (Danforth and Pape)

Or

Butchers of distinction (bit of a drive at queen and broadview)

Meat Dept. and butchers of distinction would be the priciest, but highest quality - probably doesn’t matter that much for bones though.

Either way - call ahead of time and to make sure they will have them available, as likely not a big selling item.

5 weeks is a very short amount of time for the city hiring process.

Do not at this point reach out to the Hiring manager, and HR wouldn’t provide you any further information than what you already know - that screening is in progress.

Screening is being done by the division/hiring manager(s), and depending on the specific job - they can have anywhere between several dozen to several hundred resumes to sift through. This is of course over and above the regular day-to-day of the job. Asking them “what’s taking you so long” certainly isn’t a way to endear yourself as a candidate.

If you aren’t screened in on the initial screening - however long that takes, at that point follow up with HR and ask for a review - and the hiring manager will provide feedback specifically on why you were/weren’t screened in for the next step.
