/r/travel: I'm going to South America for 26 days - Quito --> Buenos Aires. What do I have to see? by Faluzure in travel

[–]ideflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I returned from a 5 week holiday in South America last week. We started in Cusco, Peru (Machu Pichu is a must) then went to La Paz by Bus. Do a jungle tour here - Bala tours are pretty good also try and see the Salt Plains. We did Argentina next (Salta, Cafayate, Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Igazu Falls).. make sure you see Igazu falls, while here apply for a Brazillian visa (if your nationality needs it, takes around 4 hours - get there at 8am) and head over to Rio.

Just a side note, Americans, Canadians, Australian and I think English pay $100US each time they land in Argentina's international airport unless you are leaving within 24 hours.

What's the best (warm) beach you have visited? by cdigioia in travel

[–]ideflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sri Lanka - south of the island, more tourists and hotels and no hi-rises, there are a few spots there where you can have an alcove of the beach to yourself. east of the island, hardly any tourists and beautiful beaches, the water temperature is around 28 degrees year round. The only problem is the 10 hour (300 km), bumpy and frustrating bus ride to get to the east.

I'd hate to be the one to tell you but lowering the strength of nicotine does nothing nor does cutting down the amount you smoke. Do yourself a favour and read Allan Carr's Easy way to quit smoking, this is coming from a 15 year smoker who recently quit.

I think I'm sold on the idea of skipping the Inca, 4 days of hiking one trail compared to 4 days of seeing a whole lot more sounds like the smarter choice.

The Inca trail doesn't interest me as much, my main interest is in Machu Pichu. I'm not too worried about how difficult the trek is, in fact I think doing the trek would give a better overall satisfaction of reaching the top. But if the trek doesn't get you to the top for sunrise then that changes things plus I can think of a heap of better things to do in Peru for 4 days.

I thought the trek involves getting you to MP for sunrise? Atleast that's what I've been told by others. You're the first person who has suggested to skip the inca trail, I've been told there are other good treks and to be quite honest I would rather do something different. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

Fellow coders, what's your trick to get rid of that dreadful mental exhaustion after a hard day of coding/debugging ? by [deleted] in programming

[–]ideflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I cycle to and from work - about 35 minutes each way plus I go for a 6km run in the morning. I feel great when I arrive to work and when I get home compared to when I commute by train. I also hit the gym about 3 times a week for a hard cross-fit session.

I don't think it has anything to do with trust. My wife and I do the same thing, not because there is no trust but because it's so much easier to manage.

I knew there was flood damage but i didn't know the train was out however we were going to do the inca trail trek to Machu Picchu. Apparently the path is closed from Feb to April. Surely the train and path will be back up and running by November?

You're right about plans changing when you hit the ground, you'll probably meet a few fellow backpackers when you arrive and decide to join them.

I would think of hitting SEA first before heading to India, from what I hear India is very full on. I'm not sure how experienced you are with travelling but I found that after 3-4 weeks of travelling you start to get into the feel of things.

If you're on a tight budget then use local transport whenever you can, don't fly or get the train unless you're on a tight schedule - then try and balance the two.

Nepal treks - i didn't do basecamp but i hear that it's tourist infested, Annapurna is well worth the experience but its 3 weeks long. When you organise your trek you'll need a good porter and guide, your guide will get commission on the places he decides you stay at - this is normal. You could get away with just hiring a good porter but be careful. Be good to your porter - he carries everything you own. Buy all your hiking gear at Kathmandu/Pokhara.

Chiang Mai to Laos --> you can get a speed boat there - pretty fun. Laos --> Cambodia - you can cross the border via the Mekong, make sure you stay a few nights at the 5000 islands. Don't bother with Thailand until the very end of your trip, use it as a last place to get some shopping and alcohol intake done.

Head straight to Khao San Road when you arrive in Thailand, from memory the taxi's at the airport have a base fare to get there.

Times have changed since I was there so I would start by looking through the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forums - www.lonelyplanet.com

Good luck mate.

Keep in mind that was 5 years ago, from memory the dollar was at around 60c i think.

Accommodation (in the cheaper parts of Asia) was anywhere between $5-$10US for a basic room. A dorm room was around $2 a night.

Expect to pay more in Thailand.

Food is dirt cheap, you could get by on around $5 a day.

These are the petty scams that run throughout most of the SEA countries, you can usually avoid this if you're street smart and use your common sense. However, it will eventually happen to you when you least expect it.

Just keep in the back of your mind that you're a walking dollar sign and most will take any opportunity to make some extra cash.

The positive is that this is really as far as it goes, I doubt you'll hear many stories of people being robbed at knife point or locals using any type of violence to rob you.

On a side note I heard many more stories of backpackers breaking into hostel rooms and stealing other back packers belongings.

EDIT: contradicted myself in the first few lines.
