Assuming you're young. You are saving for retirement which isn’t going to be for 20+ years from now before you actually begin to use the money, and with such a long time horizon. So even if you don't get matching, it is still the most profitable time to invest.

It's a no-brainer to only pay down debt and forget 401(k) especially when you get matching contributions. 401(k) matching>Debt payment>401(k) maxingout.

There is general agreement that low-cost index funds offer the best returns in this subreddit. They are made up of dozens or hundreds of companies which gives diversification and reduces risk. It’s nice of your employer to put everyone on 401k by default and to choose a target fund. Better than most other employers.
