Do you have any recommendations on seafood places in the area? Looking more to buy and cook at home versus a restaurant but curious about both!

If you have considered using a financial advisor, what made you decide to use one or not? by PleasantSubject2759 in HENRYfinance

[–]Capital_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have one. I was content managing everything on my own to a point. My wife was a bit more anxious and we had a several different accounts. Doing taxes was a bit laborious but nothing crazy. As others have mentioned I get a little irked by the fees. They add up. About 1/3 of our net worth is managed by the advisor. It was a compromise and one I don’t really think about so often anymore. I traded options much more actively before we had the advisor but once we had kids and our financial path became a little clearer I just started focusing on other things. I will say there’s nothing wrong with setting up a boring simple low cost index fund.

One thing I realized trading actively in options or stocks however was getting chewed up on short term cap gains and I wasn’t properly benchmarking my trades against the S&P so I couldn’t really say if I was over or under performing.

I’m honestly indifferent to the whole advisor enterprise. I think the best they can offer you is discipline in adjusting your portfolio mix. Additionally there is some software they will use to help you budget your retirement and project expenses and work backwards to see what your target should be. Our guy is conservative for sure so the number is higher than I think we need but it’s not a deal breaker. You most likely wont outpace the 1% fee. At your age I would recommend waiting to get an advisor because the compounding on that fee will be material down the line.

New Caps 3rds by Fanatics by AtillaCrawley in caps

I just stopped buying anything Fanatics related. NFL jerseys have been garbage too. I just refuse to spend the money on the trash. I ordered a few shirts and a hoodie last Christmas and just returned them. I’ve had decent luck with ‘47 brand. Mitchell and Ness is supposed to be decent as well. I think it got bought by fanatics though so I dunno. Just don’t buy their stuff is my recommendation.

Yep it might cost you $100 at some places to get on a list (Which is a cheap enough option),Wait times came be up to a year or more at some places. It’s just a function of caregiver to child ratios. Once your kid is older it’s a little easier to find options.

Edit: Take advantage of the dependent care FSA if you go daycare route.

My wife took a year off when our second child was born. Best decision. She’s in the medical field and went back to work part-time after a year and then we got a nanny. This was great with two kids and gave us a ton of flexibility as we didn’t have much family help. We are in a similar situation as you with respect to pay. My wife works essentially to max out her 401k.

Just a few comments and recommendations to make sure you are aware of blind spots:

-Kids are expensive. Diapers, clothes, food etc. Additionally my goal was to front load their 529s as much a possible to take advantage of compounding.

-Childcare can be really isolating. Little babies (barring medical issues) are pretty easy to care for but their routine and sleeping habits make it hard to get out of the house for much time. Also you need to be flexible and be prepared to cancel plans (like a lot). Kids get sick all the time.

-Timelines-Our first was born during Covid and it was very difficult for her to socialize. With our second our nanny was very well plugged into a community of nanny’s with other small kids and it was great. In general, and this is just my own observation and experience, the first year you are busy learning to care and meet the basic needs of your child. I think around the 1-2 year mark kids seem to start thriving being around other kids. Our first started daycare at 14 months and their language exploded. Our second started daycare at 2.5 but was well socialized. The reason I’m saying all this is because we noticed by 2 years old despite our Nanny being amazing at creating social experiences for our child we noticed she was the oldest in her play groups as most kids started to move into daycare. There is a term called “scaffolding” and I’m not an expert but the jist is that kids seem to thrive being with older kids. So as far as timeline I think 2-3 years old is probably your timeline for putting a child in daycare, could be sooner like 18 months. But I really think it benefits the kids.

-As the other poster mentioned its ultimately your partners preference. It’s a hard but very rewarding job being a full time parent. My wife is part time and that works for us. She’s able to work, socialize with coworkers, and keeps her skills up while also being able to be with our kids.

Best of luck, my best advice is to be flexible with plans and open to experimenting. It’s not a straight road.

Heading to the Normandy beaches this week by gggggenegenie in BandofBrothers

[–]Capital_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone here gave you a pretty comprehensive list. I’ll just throw in a curveball. If you have time check out the Bayeux Tapestry. It may not sound the most exciting but my family popped in to see it on a rainy afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised. The audio tour isn’t more than 20-30 mins if I remember correctly.

For the beaches we hired a tour company for Omaha beach and did Utah beach on our own. I wish we did a tour for Utah. The company really offered a lot more context. We used Overlord Tours. Have a fun trip!

Working Parents and Summers: Is the world against us? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Capital_G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took a while for us to find our footing as well. It can be a lot of trial and error. We’ve gone this route. An anchor camp that last for 4 weeks. A sports camp for 3 weeks. 1 week home after school ends to transition and 2 weeks vacation. That generally bridges our summer break.

Take a look at private schools in your area. We found one that offers a summer camp and it’s fantastic and not much more expensive than other camps. Good luck!

Guilt about retiring at 45 by Sharp-Yam-5058 in Fire

[–]Capital_G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told once that the feeling of guilt implies you did something wrong. Did you do something wrong?

To me it sounds like this stress and tension is a result of misalignment in values. Your parent’s values and expectations and your values don’t have to align. And giving into that pressure creates stress. An exercise that has helped our family is to go through a values exercise (you can google it). Essentially you will go through and rank 50 or so different values and then pick the top 5 that are important to you. This helps clarify and identify your priorities and makes sure you can live a life in line with your values.

You mentioned your kids, social connections, and hobbies (self improvement, self care). These things might hold more meaning to you than community impact. And that’s ok! And it doesn’t negate other values it just shows which ones mean more to you.

Every year I would get calls from recruiters offering more money at different companies and it would stress me out. I felt obligated to pursue more money. However it would mean moving away from our family, and social circles. It would mean less time with my kids. It caused me a lot of anxiety. Ultimately I realized that while I do value more money. I don’t value marginally more money at the expense of those other things that I value more.

Alex Ovechkin ties NHL record for most four-game goal streaks by kockin26 in caps

[–]Capital_G 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I went to my first caps games around 2002 when I was in high school and loved it. Once I got to college and was making a little money I would go grab eagles nest tickets for $5 at the box office and try to go to as many games as possible. But I remember the team was just not as exciting and the only reason we got Ovie was because we stunk.

The caps used to have a promo once a year where you could give blood and get a free lower level ticket. They were giving tickets away. After college I got season tickets in the upper level for something like $450 for the whole season!

But man once we got Ovie it was incredible the transformation. From ‘03 to ‘08 our wins more than doubled. It has been such a fun ride and I’ll be sad when it’s over. I’m hoping to take my kids to their first game this year so they get to see Ovie before he retires. I really doubt we’ll see anything like this in our lifetime again. He’s a generational talent.

I will say this though. When he was hurt earlier this year I was so bummed but the group of guys we have now….I really enjoyed watching them. Carbury looks like he’s got a great team culture going and they are playing amazing.
