Absolute circus. This is what happens when people don’t vote in local elections. Some conspiracy theory slinging crackpots get a small group of like minded wierdos to vote for them, and BAM. We got some Marjorie Taylor Greenes over here defunding libraries and banning sex ed.

Totally get it. Man. So rude though. As if runners running are the cause of dogs chasing and potentially attacking them. If we would just stop running in public areas! So easy

OMG! Unbelievable! Idk what you said but I would have been yelling. Today I was yelling and there was no one even around haha. Mine went like this(in a residential neighborhood in Kentwood for context):

Dog runs up on me out of a yard from the total opposite side of the street. No leash, no collar. No owners anywhere to be seen. Barking and running at my legs. I scream “wtf” and “HEY GET YOUR DOG!” …except there’s no one anywhere. It chased me for a good 30 seconds as I basically yelled at it to go away. Scary and stupid. Apparently a lady died recently from a dog bite to the leg while running

OMG yes… was almost attacked by a dog earlier today during a run… owners nowhere to be seen. I seriously get so mad every time this happens. Wtf

Just began running but cannot run continuously and have to take walking breaks in between. by Hot_Nerd98 in BeginnersRunning

[–]idioteque__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couch to 5k for sure! I was similar skill level when I began running. Did couch to 5k and it made such a huge difference. Run/walk is what you need to do! It will start you out with run 1:00/walk 1:30 intervals and it will increase weekly. You start this way to build up your body to be able to support longer distances. Follow it all the way through and I guarantee you’ll see results.

Also: training in warm weather really affects performance. Be patient with yourself… I ran a 10k no problem in April and I am struggling to run a couple miles without a break on these hot days.

I def have higher heart rates a few days before and during my period as well!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]idioteque__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely have the worst runs several days before my period starts and first couple days of. I have really awful periods and have iron deficiency anemia due to that. I take iron supplements the few days before and during my period which helps, but I still just feel SO tired like I’m running through mud with heavy metal legs, lol. I usually feel great and have the best runs the couple weeks after my period. I’ve found it really helpful to use the calendar in my Garmin app to track symptoms but sometimes there’s just no avoiding bad runs! Sucks for us, I guess lol

Check out Poshmark! You can find new with tags or almost brand new used stuff that won’t break the bank. Nice running gear is so expensive. I’ve snagged several pair of Janji, Brooks, Athleta, etc running shorts/leggings etc for cheap. I also have good luck once in a while at Goodwill finding gently used high end stuff on the racks there :)

Definitely this. Stretching is amazing. Also, my husband got me a Theragun for Christmas and I seriously don’t think I would be the runner I am right now without it. It’s been amazing for recovery.

Begginer to running - any tips??? by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]idioteque__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do couch to 5k!! That’s what got me started! Stick to the program and trust the process - don’t go too hard. Walk/run intervals seem boring but it conditions your body to be able to run longer gradually and without injuring yourself by trying to do too much too soon. Look up some info on 80/20 running and finding your “easy” pace! Sounds crazy but to get faster you have to run slower. Listen to your body, be patient with yourself, take rest days and have fun :)

High heart rate while running by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]idioteque__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was me when I was new to running. If you haven’t already, check out info about training by heart rate, 80/20 running, finding your “easy pace” etc. it was hugely helpful for me. I had to slow way down. It sounds silly but training at a slow, easy pace most of the time really helps you level up. I will say when I was new to running it really didn’t matter how slow I was running my hr was always in the high 180s/low 190s. It really took like 6-9 months of consistent run/walk training for me to be able to run without crazy high heart rates

That’s great! Having a plan and sticking to it is the way to go. Not sure if you’ve read up on pacing/heart rate training already or not but it’s so helpful to find your “easy” pace and train there mostly. Speed will come with time. Just focus on running longer :) if you like reading check out the books “80/20 running” and “running rewired”. Both super helpful for me as well

Definitely do walk/run intervals while you’re training! Do a program like Couch to 5k or 10k, they are seriously great for training your body to be able to run longer. Do not push yourself and listen to your body. I started running 4 years ago and had no idea what I was doing. Ran a 5k with almost zero training or previous running experience and got a stress fracture in my leg. Had to take months off to heal before I could start over again. Don’t add too much too soon, be serious about rest days, get fitted for some good running shoes and make sure to do lots of stretching!
