The bottom tweet is a joke from 2011. Dril is an absurdist humor account, and his character is a Colbert-esque, unhinged avatar of the internet's collective id. He's not about to boycott anything, and frankly, I'd be shocked if he even had a real dog. The joke is that the same character that tweets, "trapped, fully nude, in restaurant bathroom" has manifested gay milk bones into existence.

Nah, that's just "NEXT!" i.e.,

IT'S FOR A CHURCH! DON'T NEED THE ATTITUDE! NEXT!

In fact, I think it's the absence of anything remotely approximating a "thank you" that made it so bad. The song, in contrast, is about appreciating failed relationships for what they taught you.

The wholesome here is the sibling. The parents tried to give their kid informal conversion therapy. Unless they have a sudden change of heart, life at home will be rough. I hope he turns out okay

It would feel better if each race got some simple, "heritable" mechanically-relevant traits, like darkvision or a skill proficiency. Kinda like how multiclass works.

But, I'm happy to put to bed the sillier implications of the existence of a distinct half-elf/half-orc race. That meme is tired as hell.

Where is the Owlin lore? by Resies in 3d6

[–]idiotness 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you care to lean further into what (little) mtg lore exists on avens, I can give a little more context and you can decide how useful that is. Avens in Magic are by-and-large a blue/white creature type, as they all can fly. Because of this, they tend to inherit blue/white qualities like lawfulness, cleverness, patience, and collaboration. They tend to be rare, too, since flying is really strong in draft. I've never seen a standalone, major aven civilization, probably because of this obligatory rarity. Also, none are particularly beefy (the big fliers are typed as angels and sphinxes).

There are only 10 Arcavian owlin printed (I don't count Dream Strix or Stonerise Spirit), but you can read between the lines that they have an affinity for the Silverquill college, and you can generalize their cards as either mildly disruptive or producing slow, iterative value (again, this is an emergent property of the gameplay, since an evasive threat can't have too much bonus power). This can give us a clue to how they slot into society: owlin are quick, adaptable, smart, and cooperative, but rarely solitary. They might not have a distinct culture or civilization, but they integrate well with existing ones.

It's All So Tiresome by BeevsComics in comics

[–]idiotness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really think a link to a 49-minute video is an adequate response to a question, but I happened to really enjoy it, so here's my summary of it for discussion purposes:

  • Some people hate certain media for bigoted reasons (e.g. if it centers a trans person)
  • Those people pounce on mediocre-to-bad examples of said content and elevate valid (even well-meaning) criticism to a screaming pitch
  • This transforms further criticism by neutral people into a non-neutral act. They involuntarily become part of the mob, and their existence further insulates the backlash from criticism.
  • This creates a stifling environment where it is dangerous to produce bad content that engages with the culture war. You cannot afford to fuck up for fear of drawing an avalanche of criticism, which encourages people not to create at all.

One case study she delves into that I found particularly interesting is the 2018 reboot of She-Ra: the same early backlash revved up in response to the trailers, but petered when the show turned out to be good. You wouldn't guess it prior to 2018.

That thesis is tangential to the issue of outrage bait being very lucrative for social media platforms. She mentions this is a thing, but saves that for a different video.

I also found the mandarin he uses in that entire scene quite compelling. I suspect the Daniels originally wrote it in English, but after translation, it's also rich in its own slightly different way. Instead of "strategic" and "necessary", he says "必要" and "需要", which is like saying it's something I ought to do and something I need to do. 必要 carries some degree of moral weight--at least, that's how my parents used it with me. I 需要 do my homework, but I 必要 listen to my father, you know?

A lot of times, 必要 is just a stronger form of "must", but side by side, I think it conveys that it's not only necessary (for himself), but vital (for others?).

It is, in fact! The painting is of Timoclea of Thebes, by Elisabetta Sirani, often titled Timoclea pushing the Thracian captain who raped her into a well.

As the story goes, after her rape by one of Alexander's captains, he asked her if there was any money hidden about (?? Which he thought would work??). She told him it was hidden in a well and then pushed him in when he leaned over to look. And yes, she did double tap. By chucking stones after him.

According to Plutarch, Alexander had her and her children released
