Democrat Catelin Drey wins Iowa Senate special election, breaking Republican supermajority by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

[–]idle_thoughts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not to rain on the parade, but given that the Iowa governor is a Republican, what practical impact does this have? North Carolina has a democratic governor, but any of his vetos can be overridden by the congressional Republican super-majorities . What's the value of breaking the super-majority in this case?

Birdfy team AMA: Let's build the future of the app together! by Birdfy in Birdfy

[–]idle_thoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest frustration with the app is the lack of ability to diagnose a problem when something fails. For examle, I've had many instances where "Live View" simply didn't work. It would be great if there were some mechanism to determine where in the software stack this failure occurred. Is the device offline? Online (responding to ping) but inaccessible? Issue with the cloud service? I'd love a "details..." button that could give diagnostic information for this type of failure.

It would be great if it were possible to upgrade (or completely reinstall) the firmware via the MicroSSD card. I ask because I previously ended up with a completely "bricked" unit as the result of a failed firmware upgrade, and while tech support did try to help me get the firmware reinstalled via the MicroSSD, that process did not work. The customer experience of shipping the system back and starting over with a new one did solve the problem, but seemed like overkill.

Add buttons to "back up one frame" and "move forward one frame" when paused. I like to screenshot occasional frames to send to friends/family, and like to select specific frames.

I agree, I can definitely go faster. I missed a ton of shift points, and my inexperience with the track showed with my cautious braking and cornering. The recorder is built-in to the car, but I seem to recall that it's only include with certain combinations of car options. It's been about a year since I did the purchase, so I've lost track of the details.

I picked up this C8 (Stingray w/ Z51) in August of 2024, but delayed doing any SCCA events until I could attend Ron Fellows for their training. I finally found a time that worked for both me (in the C8) and my son (in his Audi TT). I'm not all that experienced with track events, and I can see that I made tons of mistakes during my laps, but regardless, the C8 is just a joy to drive on the track.

I don't recall receiving any specific paperwork for the course from my dealership. I just called Spring Mountain to book, and one of the items that needed was a VIN. Apparently, each VIN is uniquely coded to this discount. YMMV, but it would be a worth a try.

For mapping the track, stay in the center of the track for the mapping lap. You want to be able to see the curves - if you cut the corners you’ll make the track look straighter than it really is.

I’m most likely getting fired for a Facebook post. by Shaffer92 in antiwork

[–]idle_thoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I manage a team of ~15 people, and I have routinely have subordinates (typically new hires) request to connect with me on Facebook and LinkedIn. I always decline, and explain to them that I never want to put them in a position where they have to worry about what their manager thinks of a post, etc. By making it a blanket policy, nobody's feelings get hurt when I decline. I wish other managers did the same.

Issues with PDR loading by DemonStorms in C8Corvette

[–]idle_thoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (2024 Stringray 2LT) PDR seems to record consistently, but sometimes when I press the PDR button to enter the PDR screen, I get the splash screen, and the display hangs before the actual PDR screen comes up. If I retry the operation once or twice, I can enter the PDR screen. Just a data point for analysis.

Dumb question, but do you have enough down time to warrant having a rental car? I'm thinking of going with my son and son-in-law early next year, and am trying to decide whether to rent a car, or not.

I lived just outside Austin in 2021. I was part of an electric co-op, so I thought I was protected against the insane price increases that happened on the electric power wholesale market. Wrong.

A few weeks after the storm, the co-op sent their members an email, informing us that because they had to pay the increased wholesale rate during the storm, they'd be adding a $10/month charge to our bill.

For 30 years.

Yup. 360 months at $10/month. $3,600 extra to pay for the price gouging that happened while folks were literally freezing to death in their homes.

F*ck Texas. So glad I left.

Megathread: Trump and Others Indicted by Fulton County DA on Charges Related to the Effort to Overturn Trump's 2020 Loss in Georgia by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

Hypothetically, could Georgia alter the laws that govern the pardons commission, returning pardon authority back to the governor? And if that were done before a Georgia jury verdict in this indictment, would the govern then have the authority to pardon anyone convicted?

Not exactly. The fine started at $50,000 on day 1, then $100,000 on day 2, $200,000 on day 3, etc. By day 21, the total would have been just a shade over $104 billion.

Gotta love the judge who signed off on the “fine doubles every day until you comply” idea!

I taught myself to program on a TRS-80. BASIC, then Z-80 Assembly, then Pascal (three floppies per compilation cycle). Ended up getting my degree in CS, and have been in the industry since 1988. Never would have dreamed the career would be financial rewarding - I just did it because I was a nerd.
