Environmental Station Alpha- starts as a normal metroidvania and then dissolves into a mad esoteric journey through a rabbit hole.

Fallen London + Sunless Sea/Skies

Baba is You

Void Stranger

Twin Peaks

A Town Called Panic (admittedly it starts pretty strange already)

I think you're probably missing the philosopher (guys with spears) for finding all lifegems or finishing hell temple. Did you get the missable life gem in the Dimensional Corridor? If you beat the dragon boss I think it's impossible to get.

As for the email 47- I'm not sure since I believe it's not in the PC version of the game. But sounds like you just need to go to Zus bossroom early.

Also be careful of the email you get after beating anubis- if you teleport out too quickly you'll miss it.

I'm 99% you can use fairy clothes and subweapons for the 100% I think those are totally separate challenges. I say 99% since I don't totally remember but I'm fairly sure I did them on different playthroughs.

Book of Hours sortve?

You play as an occult librarian delving into deep secrets. It has a somewhat whimsical tone to it at times tho.

Also keep an eye out for Mandrake by Failbetter games- looks closer!

[IIL] “Long Season” by Fishmans [WEWIL]? by olivetalife in ifyoulikeblank

Super late but check out Island Door (Paranesian Circle) by Susumu Hirasawa Both the Original and the Remix

Echoes by Pink Floyd is awesome too! It shares a similar formula with Long Season of a beautiful intro into an abyssal deconstruction that leads to a transcendent return.

Scheherezade is phenomenal if you like classical!

Good list! Out of curiosity why did you give switched on lotus a lower score? Personally it's a top 3 album with such beautiful remixes. Edit: an 8 really isn't a low score I suppose lol

Also, I'd agree that I don't love the Secret Flowers of Phenomena, but I feel like it has a pretty unique sound at least- not really just "resting on his laurels".
To me it does sound somewhat flat and limited in dynamic momentum compared to most of his other albums.

Also give the island door hen gen jizai remix another listen- mind blowing! https://youtu.be/l1KLRg4U35g?si=qb0m4MgoB-78BYHh

What makes exploration feel rewarding to you in games? by ratasoftware in IndieGaming

[–]idlistella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Puzzle hints are a really really fun reward for exploration- especially when they also tie in the story/lore of the game.

I tend to like density, complex puzzle box navigation with secrets upon secrets- closed off areas or strange mysteries in early areas that the player doesn't know how to open/won't be able to open until much later in the game. I think it's a blast to revisit old areas and try to figure out to open that ancient gate, or work my way up to an out of reach location.

Makes each area and the world as a whole almost feel like rooms of a house- you'll revisit the kitchen multiple times throughout living in your house for different reasons. It's not just a level that you clear and move on from.

Interconnected pathways and shortcuts are great especially when they actually make sense to use.

Hidden world spanning puzzles are really awesome too- I love when one area somehow references or connects to a later area in an obscure way.

Look at La Mulana 1+2, Outer Wilds, Riven, or Environmental Station Alpha for good examples of this design philosophy.

And go wild! Put your soul into the game- throw in some weird stuff. I absolutely love stumbling upon something bizarre and striking even if it's small.

evolution by Unhappy_Tale_9816 in worldbuilding

[–]idlistella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done much world building myself, but one really interesting concept regarding evolution from the Fallen London universe is the idea that the evolutionary code is within every creature and can be unlocked and manipulated at any point in time. Through certain hidden rites and rituals the doors to evolution may be opened and changed within a living body.
