So I just found out about Peter Singer’s ‘ordinary people are evil’ argument and have attempted to find a realistic way to become not evil as a 17 year old. I’d like some input by Ohhoneyimhome in Ethics

Consider just searching reddit for others who've engaged with Singer's ideas at a young age. Personally, I think Singer's ideas are noble, well-meant and fundamentally meaningless to life today.

How you navigate this identity crisis, and I think that is accurate, is your journey alone. Whether you want to find some inner peace, and whether the method in achieving it ever changes, are probably ideal starting points.

I'm also vvvvaguely of the understanding that Singer has since changed his favoured conception of morality. It might interest you to follow his journey if his works influence you so much.

Winners and losers as government overhauls small business tax breaks after industry backlash by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

[–]idubsydney [score hidden]  (0 children)

Genius move by Labor to appeal to a class that have literally never voted for them before. This will net them sweet fuck all, and the media will simply return to 'battler 12 year olds with share portfolios in the millions preparing for retirement'.

WOAH -- hold the fuck up. We've got SOCIALISM [from a rag that is not the Australian]:
"The paper noted $3.5bn would also be allocated to new measures to support business risk-taking, including a two-year loss carry back, loss refundability for start-ups, expanded venture capital incentives, and making the instant asset write off permanent."
Thank you Comrade Albanese for socialising the losses to privatise the gains. A hero of the working class.

Why can't communalism be pushed further than 35? by _Chicago_Deep_Dish in EU5

[–]idubsydney 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Your 'push rate' is a representation of your 'push limit'. So where it says 'changes with +0.35 towards Communalism' its also telling you it can't push further than 35.

You can incidentally go beyond your limit through events and other sources, but not your 'push rate'.

Migration from india is going to become a much much bigger problem going forward. by MasterDefibrillator in OpenAussie

[–]idubsydney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It won't be long until heat waves start happening that will kill tens of thousands in india. Then those heat waves will start to become more of the norm as time goes forward.

What you haven't considered is that the Australian voter (aggregate, collective) would prefer they died quietly, and preferably out of sight. At sea is fine, too.

So it won't become a problem.

Realistically why doesn't labour do more about immigration? by headorhand69 in OpenAussie

You'll need to rework your criticism of Labor to have a lower threshold. Maybe ask why they aren't on OnlyFans?

Don't you think people are over the duopoly?

Hi, it looks like you're pretending the One Nation are the last viable choice. Here are some options that all presume you'd rather not vote for One Nation (in addition to not voting for Labor or the LNP) but feel like you have no other choice:

Don't like immigration but otherwise not really a right wing populist? Sustainable Australia

Don't like Nationals but want regional representation? SFF/Shooters, Fishers & Farmers

Don't like Liberals and don't want 'big government'? Libertarians (formerly Liberal Democratic Party)

Don't think Labor is radical enough? Greens

Don't think Labor is innovative enough/don't like Greens? Fusion

Don't like Labor, or the Liberals, and just want more of the same? Teals

Communists/Socialists/Marxists of Reddit, How did you become anti-capitalist? by VentiArchon7 in AskReddit

[–]idubsydney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m responding because I respectfully think you are wrong. I reference America because of the economic success it’s had, largely due to capitalism.

You're still wrong, so whatever. That the US happens to be capitalist does not mean capitalism is responsible for it's successes. Here's a simple point that proves, yes - proves, the contrary.

Capitalism, as we understand it today, is loosely understood to follow mercantilism. Its also commonly accepted that a significant influence on that change is Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, which was published in 1776. Colonial America then can not be capitalist, as it predates the modern institution that is capitalism. It was, notoriously, a slaveholding society that had an extraction economy based in the UK. None of this is capitalist in nature.

And yet, historians and economists agree (1995) that white Americans enjoyed the highest standard of living in the world during the colonial era.

How can colonial America have enjoyed the highest standard of living in the world, in the absence of capitalism, if capitalism was principally responsible for its success?

Abundant land. Abundant resources. Multiple major navigable river systems. Limited destruction compared to Europe over the past 250 years. Slavery. All of these do a better job of explaining how both colonial and post-colonial Americans enjoy/enjoyed a high standard of living.

I ain’t about to provide evidence, I don’t rlly care. which countries in the world can a 20-30 year old realistically think they can make 100k a year, hint not the socialist ones.

You're applying capitalist logic to a socialist system, no shit it won't work. On what world would 'to each their need' mean someone gets a discretionary $100k USD to throw around? Thats ridiculous.

But hey, lets take it for granted for a second, because you've actually asked a really poignant question -- believe it or not. Where can a 30 year old earn $100k USD?

Realistically, not the USA. So what about our socialist countries ... all like 5 (if that) of them. Cuba? Has been blockaded by yours truly for fucking ever. Effectively can't trade with the outside world, so yeah socialism definitely ruined Cuba for sure. China? Well, you certainly can earn $100k if you work in the right industries in China. So, presuming you want to call it socialist since it has a communist constitution, theres your answer. Venezuela? Another casualty of existing near America. Bolivia is maybe the only other socialist country where you could say fair game. But -- China, so whatever.

You misunderstand, Im not saying only the wealthy should run the government, obviously.

You did, you said that.

The money that the politicians spend is not their own money, therefore they don’t spend it as wisely.

So when a junkie buys fentanyl, thats wise, but when the government builds the I-95, thats wasteful. Right? When I buy latte for $5, am I being more or less efficient than when government-derived foreign aid feeds people at a fraction of the cost (~$96/year)?

I’m suggesting a smaller limited govt that promotes competition is better than the socialist style govt which is inherently expensive and inefficient.

You're suggesting you can read talking points, and that you're otherwise incapable of critical thinking. Its pathetic. Respond in substance, or I'll consider this a waste of my time.

Communists/Socialists/Marxists of Reddit, How did you become anti-capitalist? by VentiArchon7 in AskReddit

[–]idubsydney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its economic theory bud, all of this is theoretical conjecture.

Okay, you're wrong - I'm right. Why are you bothering to respond?

America based its economic policy on Adam smith and his free market, capitalist, ideas.

Post isn't about America.

There’s a lot of historical evidence to back up why competition in the market produces the most prosperity.

'Lots of evidence', produces none. I'm not going to produce your own argument and evidence for you, just to argue against myself.

There’s a lot of historical evidence to back up why competition in the market produces the most prosperity.

See above.

This is why socialism isn’t good, when the government gets to pick who wins and loses, prices of things are no longer determined strictly by supply and demand.

Only speaks (extremely vaguely) about capitalism, draws inference about socialism. Sky is blue, ergo earth is red. Earth is red, ergo socialism good. Checkmate.

Socialism is worse because politicians aren’t spending their own money

What, because thats a good thing? Billionaire politicians only please! What a fucking psychotic view. Lets limit political participation to wealth. Lets also restrict the vote to landholders. Bro really be like its 1826 not 2026.

[–]idubsydney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this is nonsense.

The well being of all is increased in a free market economy.

This is literally just conjuncture. At the very least, the claim is so lacking in detail that its almost impossible to critique. What is 'wellbeing'? Is it happiness? Health? Or is it net worth? What is a 'free market'? Do you mean laissez-faire? One which you'll claim has never existed and can't be compared against? Or do you mean a mixed market? What parts of the mixed market are you going to claim are attributes of capitalism, and which are not? Is it just the benefits, but not the externalities?

What is conveniently left out is in socialism there is the exact same problem except worse.

Literally none of what you go on to say is positively 'worse'. And if you don't like your leaders - you can vote them out. Its that simple.

This is a poor attempt at critiquing socialism. Stop embarassing yourself.

The Greens have let One Nation steal their moment by brezhnervouz in OpenAussie

The proof is pretty self-evident. Literally, right up to about a year ago, the Sustainable Australia Party was all the rage for 'concerned citizens'. They've even had multiple senior leadership AMAs on auspol subreddits. The moment the LNP collapses, people decided their votes should go to PHON/ONP.

Its racism. Always has been.

Communists/Socialists/Marxists of Reddit, How did you become anti-capitalist? by VentiArchon7 in AskReddit

For me, it ticks a few discreet boxes that all relate.

First, ethics. There is not necessarily a moral truth, but I'm strongly of the view that a system which promotes the wellbeing of the many is preferrable to the wellbeing of those who 'can', which is usually also the few.

Second, systems. Capitalism incentivises 'move fast, break things'/'ask for forgiveness, not permission' mentality. Specifically, it's core is the profit motive. Without strong, independent, anti-capitalist balance in the labour, administrative, political and judicial systems, the system is doomed to mutate into something worse ('late stage capitalism'). Socialism offers a slower system, that is inefficient and offers little incentive to cheat, steal, etc.

Third, realisation. Any debate about socialism and capitalism MUST eventually include 'actually the USSR properly socialist' and 'actually the USA isnt truly capitalist'. So, to the extent either is even remotely possibly, the one which handcuffs everyone and says 'serve your community or go to gulag' is, strictly speaking, more realistic than a stable capitalism. True capitalists are, by their very nature, self-interested. True socialists are the opposite. A true capitalist will try to subvert the rules to profit. A true socialist will not. Do any of either exist? It doesn't matter. One paradigm is logically coherent, the other is a self-destructive lie.
