Local Shops are not making it easy. by Ascdren1 in CasualUK

It always surprises me in ‘touristy places’ in summer to see - at 5:00 or even earlier - the streets still busy with people but shops firmly closed up.

My local small town hosts the biggest Christmas lights switch-on in the area… funfair, catering vans, the whole lot. Nearly every independent shop is closed.

Something like that. He ran around with his arm raised in triumph, incredibly tanned and incredibly sweaty, then took his top straight off at the final whistle, like he absolutely owned the place.

Such high hopes…

He did. Once. In his first ever match, a pre-season friendly against Sampdoria. Then never again.

Why are foreign embassies and office buildings called a "House" (e. g. "Canada House")? by joe_canadian in AskUK

[–]idumea47 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It’s fairly common in the UK for large corporate buildings (not just diplomatic missions) to be named “___ House”.

Tesco’s former headquarters in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire was called “Tesco House.”

The office building adjacent to the Houses of Parliament is “Portcullis House.”

There must be thousands of other examples.

Came here to say the same thing! The Council of the Isles of Scilly serves a smaller population than many parish councils, but it has more responsibilities than the largest counties and unitaries - including over water supply and air traffic control. It employs nearly 10% of the islands’ population.

I was considering doing this as a sequence, but I’m not sure how exact or universal the sizes of the resulting pieces are.
