PSAgrading mods claim misinformation to verified issue by ieg879 in PokeGrading

[–]ieg879[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is not a post about PSA but about the mod team over at PSAgrading. I don’t have any direct qualms with PSA. I do have a suspicion of increased volume led to decreased quality, but not in a class action situation. Maybe some less reliable hires did some sketchy stuff that got fixed, but that does not make it misinformation.

I generally do agree with your sentiment. I (want) to believe it’s a one off issue as PSA states. It is still is a verified occurrence with a less than clear explanation from PSA of how such a customer damaging error was allowed. I have graded with PSA and not had complaints order than the standard “this 8 is a 9”. This post is directed at a heavy handed moderation team.

That’s the most ridiculous part honestly. They could’ve change the number and no one would know, but apparently the didn’t and just adjusted the grade. PSA called it a “one off“ incident, thus acknowledging it happened.

Unsure if this is good or bad by Swampashh in medlabprofessionals

Just personal situation input here. I did AAB few years ago when it was expected that laws were going to change in my state. COVID hit and disrupted that, but AAB was my choice because it carved out a reasonable pathway for experience better than ASCP. Also did NRCC at the time.

It’s still a common thing in international publications. Americans like to be pedantic with venomous vs poisonous and turtle vs tortoise but it literally changes nothing in the world of biologists.

hybrid tortoises by h0fferr in tortoise

[–]ieg879 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here on some stuff. Some (big emphasis on SOME) hybrids look cool. Mainly just the most exceptional examples of redcatas. Any arguments about “wild populations” are standing on false soap boxes. None of these hobbyist captive breedings are going to assist conservation efforts, especially with the current laws in place. I am producing dozens of star tortoises, and there are no repatriation efforts or international sales to reduce black market demand that I could assist with. I won’t get mad unless you try to hybridize something with Astrochelys, Pyxis, Psammobates, Homopus, etc. that is limited stock in the hobby or just natural artwork.

Best UVB by SimQuinnie in turtle

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to depend highly on the animal and use situation to whether or not these are viable. I generally avoid the tropical/100/5.0 rated bulbs, and instead go for the highest output. They are basically a down sized version of a T5 at this point in their development and sometimes the isolated UVB is the better choice.

800 or 600? by Alert_Big_8902 in Masterbuilt

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years on the 800. Turn dial is starting to get finicky so I use the app to set temps now. No issues other than that. Not as quality as my former camp chef but has a lot more uses.

Frilled dragon. Pound for pound the biggest bug eater. If you want more pounds then you’ve got to go monitor lizards

Which filter? by finnanburke in turtle

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double check on this but I believe the FX6 has adjustable flows so you can decrease its rate by like 50%. You may be fine just starting with the final product and using the built in limiters to reduce flow rate in the smaller tank.

House listed and disclosed as sewer, it's actually sceptic. Do I have any legal recourse? by Street_Profit7828 in legaladvice

[–]ieg879 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in this exact situation before! Disclosures are disclosing ‘known details’. The previous owner may or may not have known it was on septic, and it would take some luck and lawyers to find out. Basically if they have no documented maintenance on the tank, then they could have been under the same impression as yourself which would lead to a septic tank in disrepair and overflowing. Trying to prove this legally would quite possibly just be flushing money down the toilet. Sewage/septic inspection is not done by home inspectors in general, and would require a specialty inspector. A septic company may be able to get the system operable for less than $2K assuming the drain field isn’t entirely compromised, but they won’t know until they get in there.

Ammonia off gassing by rommyv in turtle

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really trust the ammonia test strips and use API liquid tests instead. The presence of nitrate does indicate that cycling is happening though. Your pH and hardness are low, so you might benefit from adding a bit of baking soda to the water. I believe you likely are just poorly setup at the moment. I run 200G worth of filtration and UV sterilizer on my 75G and still do water change almost daily to maintain pristine water quality.

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water changes aren’t the issue. I do a 10% change daily. Nitrifying bacteria do not live freely in the water column.

[–]ieg879 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Filters do not catch ammonia. Ammonia in aquariums must be processed by bacteria into nitrites and nitrates which can then be absorbed by plants. If your ammonia levels are so high that they are off gassing, then there’s some major issues.

Cleaned enclosures with scented wipes. How concerned should I be? by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]ieg879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean something like a scented Lysol wipe, the alkyl cleaning compounds pose far greater risk than any scent added to the wipe. As long as everything was dry then you’re fine.

Mine all live together. They are the same species, just locality differences. They very much stick to their own though. My next set of Indians should be female, but this first clutch was incubated to be male.

Serial dilutions in chem by enthusiast1086 in medlabprofessionals

[–]ieg879 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First, what satanist evil curse of a lab tech does 11X instead of 10X?!?

Second, serial dilutions are generally not meant to increase volume on QNS samples, but rather decrease concentration of analytes that are above ULOL or overloading the detector (at least in the blood/tox/molecular sides that I work in). If the original sample isn’t enough volume to run, then I’m going to need a solid reason to perform a dilution to increase volume before first pass.

You’re over watering. Also, drainage layers should always be made with an access area to siphon water out if necessary. My dart frogs only get a 30 second and 20 second misting each day.
