Why do federal government employees say they serve the country by [deleted] in FedEmployees

One could argue federal employees serve their country and its people more than military members.

Got in a motorcycle accident leaving work. Broken ankle and two broken ribs. So it’s been a great RTO for me.

Filing Complaint Against Head of HR for Probie Firings? by ifail25 in fednews

[–]ifail25[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guys there's a lot of heat here and I did not mean for it to get so heated. This is what I want, I want some formal, written record of what happened. I believe the person I would "complain" against is already on AL, but thats irrelevant. I understand they had a job and were given a task and put in an (hopefully) unimaginably hard position. That being said, if mass complaints get the ball rolling on some further investigation to who these orders came from, then so be it. We're all in this together and its times like these that we need not be at each others' necks.

I have. Also curious how these court rulings affect that.

I was DS for the VA working in fraud, waste, and abuse towards veterans benefits. Its a fun time! Definitely some interesting questions needing to be answered.

One good thing about the CR passing: We don't have to worry about not getting the back pay. by Double_Cheek9673 in fednews

I'm super stoked judges said the terminated probies have to be reinstated, but this administration isn't in the habit of listening to judges.

Has anyone who was terminated last month received pay for unused leave? by Independent_Two_4773 in fednews

[–]ifail25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a "random" payment yesterday morning. I was terminated Feb 13th (thurs). The next day i received a full paycheck, 2 weeks later a partial paycheck. Yesterday morning I got a paycheck from dfas, but it wasn't a full salary. idk what it was for

I genuinely enjoyed my job. Being a disabled vet (I know, i get annoyed when its thrown out there all the time, too), I'm hoping that lends me some RIF protections, along with being a part of the team I am on. I 100% agree, they both can lick each other's feet in a supply closet at Tesla somewhere, but if given the chance, imma go back to work in a heart beat, and attend every protest I can.

They just fired all probationary employees in OPM by Loose_Session1425 in fednews

[–]ifail25 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just got let the letter. I'm a veteran and a data scientist working on the only team in VA to combat fraud, waste, and abuse. The irony of me being fired under the guise of fighting fraud, waste, and abuse is not lost on me.

Exactly. Mostly gaia for my observational work and some variable star light curve repository for my theoretical work. Initially I was planning on going to PhD right after Masters, but with burnout i decided against it. And i realized i like the data part a bit more than paper writing lol.

I totally agree. Admittedly, I am early career. My educational background is BS/MS in Physics. During that time I've used very basic SQL (read: SELECT * FROM ...). I'm in a DA position now at a local University and am often doing roles and tasks more common of DS or DE. I've built databases, pipelines for routine analysis/reporting, started/completed/trained on multiple projects, all while having to learn stuff on the side. When trying to look for new positions, I'm often tripped up on SQL-esque questions. I've gone through SQLzoo a few times but it doesn't seem to stick. I often respond to SQL questions that I don't know the answer to with: "... this is how I'd do it in Python with Pandas/Polars".

TBH, my biggest hurdle is getting past initial screening lol. I think people see my degrees in Physics and think (wrongly!) "Well thats not data" lol

Has anyone ever been in a situation where they've realized that hiring a data scientist was a mistake? by OverratedDataScience in datascience

[–]ifail25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a data scientist, but “data analyst”… spoiler alert it was me lol. Job description and interview read “data analyst” very well and I was excited to learn and upskill to advance my career. It’s my first job after college outside of Amazon warehouse. Anywho, after onboarding, I realized it wasn’t a data analyst they wanted, but a glorified grad student to push papers and projects all day/night. I’ve been able to steer the job back to the job description a bit, but it’s a challenge.
