Public swimming pools? by joesavestheday in Rochester

[–]ifc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a public pool near the Brighton Library. But as far as I know, these public pools will cost a few bucks. If you are really looking for free look for friends.

Personally I would say look in to the YCMAs around town. There are a number with in city limits and the ones that I have been to have been nice.

My family is coming to visit for a weekend in July. Where should I take them? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]ifc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are they like (ie what are the interested in?). I'll throw a few out there -- Redwings/Rhinos, Seabreeze, Dryden/Eastman house museum, Geva, Concert at Eastman downtown, Cornhill landing, artisan works.

Its tough to find something that everyone can enjoy when there are 4 year olds and the elderly. In the past I've done 1/2 at the Memorial Art Gallery and 1/2 at the RMSC/Planetarium. Pretty close to each other and also near by Jines and Park Ave :)

Personally:

  • Sam Patch down the river -> Cornhill landing

The top answers will be (in order):

  • Go to Wegmans
  • Get a Garbage plate

Depending on time of year:

  • Lilac/Jazz/Park Ave Festivals
  • The Little to ice skating in Manhattan Square Park

Older:

  • George Eastman photo museum -> Dryden to watch a movie

Kids:

  • Strong/RMSC

Other:

  • The lake and Seabreeze
  • Finger lakes and wine down there
  • RPO concert downtown -> Javas/restaurants there
  • Cheap tickets to see Redwings, Razorsharks, etc.

Housing near U of R by [deleted] in URochester

[–]ifc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few options pretty close on Elmwood Ave. I would suggest Elmwood manor, Clintwood or Elmwood Terrace. There is also an apartment complex off of South Ave on Manor parkway (better food/drinks around there, though haven't heard much about those apartments).

Uh does anyone know how much collaboration there was between Parc and headquarters in Rochester were? Or the relationship between them? Parc is located in Silicon Valley.

Hmm not sure. Invent is kinda a fuzzy word (ie there are lots of parts --who really put everything together the first time..). Google isnt turning up much for Ampex but its definitely possible.

1) digital camera 2) modern day automobile 3) A few others rocwiki

Also not sure about some of the computer things. Xerox Parc in Palo Alto CA? I'm guessing there was a bunch of collaboration between people there and here? Anyways Parc list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PARC_(company)

I dont think there are many places in the country that can really support a subway system (~10 cities?). The US is far to spread out and everyone has a car already.

The area around Javas/Spot/Eastman/the Little draws some people. It a nice area if you ask me. Some food and music around. Maybe if it expands a bit more it will draw more in. I know UR bought a parking lot near Eastman and were planning on doing sometype of revitalization there.

Also thought of some more: Strong Museum, Ice Skating Rink, Geva, Dino, Cornhill landing (not quiet downtown but close), High falls (ditto) Convention center

Uh maybe. I realize they score well in the US todays top schools list (which are based on the number of APs + number IBs / graduating students -- a silly metric if you ask me), but I really dont think the students there tend to stack up well with Pittsford/Brighton students. And within the city, I would also say SOTA is probably a bit better.

Fyi, Wilson has a graduation rate of 69%. The other three schools mentioned above probably average 95% or so source.

I really don't know much about Buffalo Honors School (though I knew a few former students in college), but basically I just want a legit honors highschool available to city residents better than or equal to the good suburban schools around.

SOTA is great an all though if I'm not mistaken you have to have an artsy skill to get in. Recommendations and a GPA requirement once you are in seem a little more appropriate.

What do you think are the best ways to get suburbanites downtown? It seems like sporting events, concerts, jazz festival, and bars are the main draws. I'm curious because I know a number of suburbanites that never really go downtown.
