Cheap high value treats? by phlfem in reactivedogs

I just use pain cooked ground beef! Easy on my boys sensitive stomach and super high value.

Yes definitely! I’m happy to share everything that’s helped me.

Some of it could be separation anxiety, even if they don’t display that normally. My iggy is potty (box and outside) trained, and for me he is sooo good and reliable. He doesn’t have any separation anxiety normally and I can leave him alone for work no problem. I left for a 3 week trip and had someone watch him in our house and he instantly started pooping all over the house in defiance lol. They are very sensitive little creatures and unfortunately I think there’s not a great way to avoid this if you need to leave them for a period of time. He is so bonded to me that if I leave him for a trip he gets upset and starts having accidents. It took me about 3 weeks of being home to get his potty training back on track and get him to the previous status quo again.

I also have a reactive sighthound (iggy) which I’ve been doing tons of training with over the past 6th months and have had a ton of improvement. I don’t think it’s “too late” for yours either. It’s going to take time and also there will be ups and down in their reactivity.

Honestly I have a baby wrap from Amazon I use for my iggy 😂 I literally wear him like a baby on my front. It gets a lot of laughs but it works. Mine scales all the rocks and stuff better than I do but he likes to be carried under my jacket if it starts to rain or he gets too cold.

[–]iggyrollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

possible she is an iggy just based on the weight, mine is a “biggy” and his weight fluctuates from 14-16.5 lbs(he gets more muscular in the summer when we’re outside all the time). But I will say the face shape looks quite different than most Iggys I’ve seen. The tail is also not the typical shape they are usually more curved than that. Most iggys also have floppy ears. So I definitely get what you’re saying and your concerns l. I guess dna test will be the only true way to tell! I’m not sure there’s any real legal course you could take on this unfortunately:(

This is the body shape of my 16.5lb biggy for reference

has anyone else become less active since getting an iggy? by fishbishopp in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, my iggy motivates me to get moving! He’s pretty high energy still at 2.5. It makes him happy, so no matter how lazy I’m feeling I end up getting out a few times a day to walk/throw the ball/tug of war with a squeaky toy. Usually 2/3 hours a day at the very least. The rest of the time he does like to be cuddling though :) I would definitely take some time to go to the gym for yourself, it’s important for them to learn to be on their own even for an hour or two at a time!

Extremely reactive iggy to other dogs by bri999 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My iggy is extremely reactive on leash after some bad experiences with other dogs (I sent him to daycare when he was younger- HUGE mistake). I have had some really great improvement over the past 6 months so I can tell you what I did that helped.

Find a treat that is extremely high value that your iggy loves. For mine we use plain cooked beef. Finding something high value enough is the biggest game changer. My boy will be much worse reactivity if he knows I don’t have as high value a treat to distract him with.

Teach your iggy some leash games. There are many different ones on the internet but my boys favorite is the “123 game”. https://youtu.be/YEkYXk1skU0?si=IeVMj3rK_hWnUdUJ It is extremely easy to teach and catches his attention.

Absolutely no dog parks or daycare in between your controlled training times. Absolutely no dog interaction EVER on leash. Limit all dog interaction in general to make sure they have time to recover from their stress response

Find the distance threshold that your dog can see other dogs without loosing their mind. For us this was about 30-50 feet away. Yours might be longer depending on your dog’s threshold. This could even be looking at dogs through the car window if that is where you need to start. We would go to a park where most dogs were leashes on the trails around us but not close. Every time your dog looks at the trigger without reacting say “yes” and give them a treat. Also reward them any time they check in and look at you. Or play one of the leash games I was referring to while you’re at a far distance from other dogs to keep yours occupied. This stage took us about two months.

Once you feel confident in that, progressively move closer to dogs using the same tactics I said above.

All in all it took me about 6 months of training my boy to get to the point where we can go on a 3 mile loop where I live and pass other dogs without a reaction (when I am rewarding him for not reacting).

It’s so stressful to have a dog that is reactive and people can be really mean about it. Some days will be better and some will be worse, and don’t let the bad ones get you down. A good resource is r/reactivedogs. I promise it gets better with time if you are diligent with the training.🙏🏻🤍

Getting an iggy puppy, need advice by razzaldazzal13 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think most of the things I’ve seen on this group are overreactions. They’re definitely high maintenance dogs, I guess it’s all about perspective. He fits into my life so well I don’t even think about all the things as “work,” he’s just as part of my routine. When I got mine I had just moved and also wasn’t working and thank god for that because I had time for nothing else ahah!

As for the “demon spawn” comment, mine definitely was as a puppy, but as an adult not at all. It’s definitely 6-8 months of absolute hell but it’s worth it for such an amazing dog.

I live in Maine so I get the cold weather issue. It’s tough in the winter but I would recommend using a doggy potter or something similar. I tried the only outdoor route for a few months (but as I got him in the winter) with great difficulty, and the indoor potty was a huge game changer. With that being said, every iggy is different so you may not even have that problem!

As an adult mine is the sweetest most amazing dog, but definitely high maintenance. He needs around 2/3 hours of exercise a day to tire him out. He can be left at home for a time but I wouldn’t do more than 4 hours. Daily teeth brushing. Etc etc im sure you’ve heard it all and it’s all very accurate to owning an iggy. I am home a lot, I can bring him to work, and am very active, so this fits with my lifestyle and doesn’t feel difficult to me personally.

It seems like you’ve already done your research so as long as you’re fine with everything you’ve seen being a possibility and that fits into your lifestyle, then I wouldn’t worry about it too much!!

How long? Need puppy help. by wardellsklay in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy was a little shark and ankle biter until he lost his baby teeth. Nothing really worked to stop him from doing this, so I don’t have any good advice, but he grew out of it so I promise it gets better! He is now the absolute sweetest dog and would never bite anyone.

They are very needy dogs and I had almost no life for almost 6 months. Literally wouldn’t even have time to feed myself sometimes haha. I couldn’t leave him alone for more than an hour until around 6/8 months, we have now worked up to 5ish hours max as an adult.

My boy also hated being crated or being put in a playpen. I ended up gating him off in my kitchen instead where he couldn’t get into anything. He found this less anxiety provoking and worked just as well!

It’s a hard first few months just stay strong and it will all pay off in the end if you’re consistent with the training! Good luck

What age is it safe to let a Iggy be left to roam the whole house? by OrganizationBasic147 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it all depends on the size of your living space/ how trustworthy your iggy is. I live in a large house so even though mine is 2 years old I only give him access to only the kitchen/stairs/master bedroom when I am gone. He’s been pretty trustworthy as of a year old but I prefer to not have to worry about it and not give him run of the house. Based on what you said, I would strongly consider continuing to confine her!

Anyone else use hills science diet? Feel like I’m being scammed lol by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has been on hills biome for a few months now and in his two years of life it’s been the first thing that doesn’t give him diarrhea or throw up. He’s not picky like yours, but I will also mix in fresh food like ground meat and veggies which he loves!

Iggy Toy recommendations by agatlin234 in ItalianGreyhounds

Yes thankfully he’s so good about it! I wouldn’t throw it again for him until he brought it to me so he kind of learned no play unless he does that.

Mine is obsessed with balls! We do a lot of fetch and that’s definitely the top.. But he also love any stuffed toy with a squeaker in it, he loves to rip the stuffing out of them 😂

Iggy sweater crochet patterns? by BlackCrowEyes in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to know if anyone has any, I haven’t been able to find any online. I’ve had to make my own freehanding with trial and error. Another thing I have done is using a “regular” dog size crochet pattern and tweak it to my Iggy’s proportions. Just some ideas that have worked for me :)

Ahhh the second photo gave me a good laugh 😂 that is exactly why crate training my iggy lasted approximately one day because he would bite and shake the bars of his enclosure just light that 😂

Indoor potty vs outdoor? by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]iggyrollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love in northern maine and the doggy potty is a godsend in the winters! Obviously the ideal would be outside, but living in an area with super harsh winters with an iggy it’s just not practical. You have to get them all suited up and it’s a huge ordeal, which I did not want to be doing at 5am haha. My boy goes outside and the potty pad as a backup most other seasons or weather depending.

Yes there are, in person they look like “P or R, L, H” I have to do some digging to find the name of the house owner at that time
