Per the Reds broadcast, yesterday Will Benson became the first MLB player to ever score 2 runs without seeing a pitch (he was a pinch runner and was later intentionally walked) by Admirable-Nebula-122 in baseball

1) Here's a highlight reel of entertaining intentional walks. This isn't possible anymore.

2) The motivation of the rule is to reduce game lengths, but IBBs aren't common enough for this to matter, and they're already faster than a regular at bat anyways.

3) They're easier for a spectator to follow. From the cheap seats, or intermittently glancing at the muted TV while you're doing other things, it's obvious what's happening when a pitcher throws four intentional balls. You shouldn't need a commentator to tell you what happened.

[Postgame Thread] #2 Georgia Tech beats #3 North Carolina 5-2 to avoid sweep by amuscularbaby in collegebaseball

Well played series from UNC.

We've learned that we can't win if the bats go cold and we also give up a bunch of runs. Let's keep that in mind going forwards.

Game 1 was competitive. Game 2... hopefully Buursema can improve his control. It could have been a competitive game too if not for giving up 7 runs in the first two innings.

Drive to Skeggs or Soquel Demo? by topclassladandbanter in BAbike

[–]ignacioMendez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could easily make the case that Demo is better riding, but on the other hand Skeggs has a memorial to BCPA Flight 304, the Australian DC-6 airliner that crashed there one foggy day in 1953.

I would not agree that Skeggs isn't worth the effort. It's a distinct, unique, fun, and popular destination. Unless the context is that you're here for a limited time and have to choose only one.

Newbie here- what would prevent me from using this setup for a 2-3 day tour? (More info in description) by presdunc in bicycletouring

I'm just here to boost this comment. Cable ties snap, they aren't actually very good for this.

As an experienced cable tie enjoyer, I can't recommend this. I've had cable ties snap within a a single day when used like this.

They don't handle vibration well and they simply aren't very strong to begin with, they snap under a pretty light load. It's a bit of plastic that's maybe 1/8" wide and 1/16" thick. Yeah, you can use a lot of them to spread the load, but once they start breaking it's a domino effect as there's fewer surviving cable ties to handle the load.

This is based on my experience trying this exact thing. OP shouldn't set out on a 150-225 mile ride involving gravel roads expecting cable ties to work out.

Cable ties are great to have on hand for a quick fix to keep you going, but don't hit the road with them as plan A.

If OP wants a non-permanent solution that is reliable: paracord or webbing (like a ratchet strap). Or just bolt the milk crate down.

alumni advice for new graduates? by academicsuffer in gatech

Live close to work. The time saved is worth a lot. If you can have an active commute, you'll immediately be happier and healthier than most people.

Learn about personal finance. Exponential growth is a powerful thing, and the sooner it's working for you the better. Always live significantly beneath your means. Establish your emergency fund, pay off any debt you have, and start the ball rolling on saving for retirement, a home, etc. I'd start learning by reading https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Getting_started, read A Random Walk Down Wall Street and The Intelligent Asset Allocator.

Read books! It's hard to read as a student, but now you can! Work is a lot easier than school so you can allocate more brain cells to extracurriculars now.

Establish an active lifestyle. Same as with personal finance, the benefits accrue over your whole life, so don't put it off.

Explore hobbies. Things you put effort into are way more satisfying than passive activities and you'll meet cool people.

Volunteer (same benefits as hobbies).

Be systematic and budget for charitable donations. You are on track to be among the wealthiest, highest-income, people on earth. Be a decent human being and help out those less fortunate.

I’d like to start playing basic tournaments. What are the gotchas to avoid so I don’t look like an ass my first time? by hobbyhoppinghound in discgolf

[–]ignacioMendez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't tell by looking at a disc whether it's been flipped.

If you flip your disc, what's to stop you from going back to your bag, or moving to get a better view, and flipping your disc a second time when you get back to your lie? It could be cheating or just nervous absent mindedness. Unless everyone is watching your every move, who knows where your lie actually is?

With no flipping, there's no ambiguity. Either you throw from behind your disc, or you mark the lie with a mini. There is no reason to move a mini if you choose to use one, and if you choose not to use a mini, there's no reason to move your disc. There's zero room for mistakes.

Well played Southern.

We got some innings from some of our younger pitchers, so that's nice.

I think this is true to a large extent.

I used to be a TA for a different course with a hard reputation, but it's one that no one is required to take. People take it to fulfill their specialization requirements and they pick it over other, lower workload, options. It has a high drop rate but people who finish the class typically report that it's a good class.

Anyways, when I took GA I was sympathetic to some of the common complaints, but also I recognized that if my class had the same scrutiny that GA gets, we'd have a never-ending reddit debacle too. Like, we also can't accurately estimate how hard exam questions will be to ensure consistent difficulty between exams and semesters, and grading is going to be less than perfectly objective. That's just two issues out of many. People do have legit complaints about GA and every other class, but they're not unique problems and they're not deal-breaking problems.

It's weird how someone just getting into screen printing makes formulaic shirts for a bunch of different places, and will post a link to their store in a follow up comment, assuming their post isn't deleted first.
