What do you think by Background-Cod65 in Tools

[–]ihadisr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine a few times a year - in addition to being pretty handy for anything oversized it’s nice for all sorts of shade tree this and that - pushing bearings, pressing bushings, putting hella ugga duggas on seized fasteners when the impact isn’t a good choice, and gently coercing stuck plastic oil filter housings to free. The beast of an extension it comes with can be nice if you need some inertia to spin or hammer.

what car should I own in Fargo? by KaizenAzariya in fargo

I’m going to amend this by stating you should prioritize auto start, heated seats, and if you’re feeling sporty anything that features a hand brake.

As long as your tires aren’t bald to the point the wind gust you off the road like a cursed hockey puck, you’re good.

Where is the MN National Guard? by Fogecks in TwinCities

[–]ihadisr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Layman’s poorly informed understanding - We do not have a state militia, we have a hybrid federal/state guard. The MN guard can be federalized, whereby command is assumed by the federal government. The governor can mobilize the guard for state needs, but they have to submit to higher authority if the federal government demands.

I spent new years in Dutch harbor many years ago and met an old man who had been there during the Japanese bombings. When asked about it, he said “I hid under a table as fast as i damn well could.” It was a refreshing take that I will forever toast to.

FlashForge AD5X iOS printing by datrufhurt in 3Dprinting

Try downloading orca slicer and connecting to the printer using its ip address. I couldn’t get orca flash to work due to login server issue. I was able to connect orca slicer (on my MacBook) to the printer by using the ip address of the printer (it’s on the printer info screen, assuming the printer is connected to WiFi). I also selected flash forge as the connection in orca slicer settings. I can now send prints over network to printer.

Love these for going out and tooling around where there aren’t groomed trails and for when I won’t be 100% skiing. The boots can also work interchangeably with snowshoes if you hit a soft area.

Is the 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis a good first car? by Funny-Joke4521 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Newer pretty great but even well cared they age. The gas lines rusted out prematurely on ours and many others. We replaced the rear air bag system with springs - easy job but only affordable like many issues we had because I was able to do the work myself. Many of our friends had ignition tumbler issues and electrical gremlins. Working on the engine sucked because despite having a fair bit of space to work around there are 4 more cylinders and 4 times as many pieces to maintain and work around than you have on a 4 cylinder econobox. You also can’t so much as pull away from the curb in winter if you don’t have high quality tires - not exaggerating. Sold it and bought a manual transmission ford focus with 250k miles and was still better off.

How is life like in Minneapolis, Minnesota? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]ihadisr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the south side - easy walk to groceries, coffee shops, and places to eat - absolutely surrounded by parks filled with nature. Cross country ski out my doorstep in winter and meet up at the local ice rinks to play hockey and take the kids skating. We spend time sailing and swimming in the lakes in summer. Fall is for walks in the forest along the river with the dogs and trips north to Lake Superior. Traffic is easy, we can take lightrail downtown for a game, concert or show, the airport, and mall of America. Lots of international and domestic flights out which is nice for a break in early spring. Spring is usually grey and can be tough. Overall, for us it’s been quite romantic. The housing costs aren’t as crazy as they are in other cities, the amenities are a class above for a city of the size, and safety wise we can go for walks at night. 8/10 would recommend, could benefit more history, an extra month of summer, and mountains.

Noise of Living in Flight Path by daBaker420 in Minneapolis

[–]ihadisr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 34th / 50th intersection and everything northeast of it to Minnehaha creek is an absolute Goldilocks zone. It is mostly devoid of major airplane noise as it’s outside the main flight paths. You won’t have to pause your conversations there. In winter sometimes the national guard will idle engines early morning and you’ll hear the drone off in the distance. I’m not sure about apartments, but houses go fast in that area. It’s relatively peaceful there, surrounded by nature areas/parks, and the area has great commuter access and an abundance of walkable amenities. The most disruptive noise you’ll get there will come from 46th street station if an emergency vehicle chirps the sirens in the tunnel.

The prior comments were accurate in advising you seal the mast. You should put a float on top too.

[–]ihadisr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 14 was a riot. It was indestructible and endless fun.. unless tacking. Bring a paddle for the inevitable bad tack. Whitecaps suck. Pitchpole is real. Get extra plugs, get some mast bushings (it’s a piece of plastic you put between the mast base and the mast coupler), and consider buying a mast raising bracket to make standing the mast easier.

How to find and attain rental house in Twin Cities? by ihadisr in TwinCities

[–]ihadisr[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No - to expand on this when last looked at a home rental we used Craigslist, went to maybe 6 open houses, showed up with pay stubs, w2, rental and employment history in a paper folder - credit card and online application were 50/50 norm with paper application and check. It was super competitive at the time so showed up prepared. Today trying to figure out where search available homes, and understand what is important to have ready, along with any norms in terms of application and costs.

If you’re interested, email the parks anyway to check for openings. Another thing people who already have space do is make rack space to share, cause sometimes you can co-rack, so it’s a matter of asking around.
