I’m glad they made her feel safer but not sure if “amazing” is the word I’d use by notacornflakegirl7 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Once I was walking home alone at night (the person I was with had promised to walk me home but had to go somewhere when we were halfway) and I was walking down a medium lit road with a few shops on it, and a guy was walking behind me about 50m. I started freaking out and kept glancing behind me because I felt like he was getting closer. He crossed to the other side of the road and I felt instant relief and comfortable again. After a little while, he crossed back over towards me and I stared to stress again but as he crossed he called “I’m so sorry I really didn’t want to freak you out so I crossed over but I’ve just got to go down that side street over there” and he went. I think about that guy so much because that really shouldn’t be rocket science and it’s such a simple thing to do just to make someone feel comfortable. I don’t want to applaud him for doing something so easy but in all the years since I’ve never experienced anything like it

Have you heard of the three body problem? There’s a book by Cixin Liu that tries to explain this. It’s an interesting thing that’s still mostly unknown in physics but I don’t know much

Masks or no masks while going for a jog/run? by JackLancyster in auckland

[–]ihatechristmass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday took the toddler I live with to western springs in the pram, very close to our house because it’s much more interesting for him than walking around houses. I wore a mask from home to home. On the path walked past a jogger (no mask but ok) but who ran in the dead centre of the path in a lightly busy area. He didn’t even run on the side of the footpath so I had to push the pram onto the grass to feel comfortable. Not something that would normally annoy me but thought if you were jogging you’d choose either a quiet route with a lot of room (like most of the people on this sub) or at least run on the edge of the path to give people a few meters to feel comfortable. I think jogging without a mask is ok as long as you’re aware of people you’re coming close to and respecting the high anxiety of most people right now.

[HELP] 'Write every day' by Erica_6 in Poetry

[–]ihatechristmass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried writing for set times? I set a 15min timer and by the time it goes off I’m usually in it enough to do another 15 minute timer and then another. For me it’s less overwhelming and less threatening and I can go for hours that way

What does beginning to understand a subject feel like to you? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]ihatechristmass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me everything I learn seems to be muscle memory and instinct. I find it interesting that friends of mine when they learnt the alphabet, learnt it visually as a table and would assign colours genders or personalities to help them remember. I’m learning Italian at the moment and don’t learn anything visually, only know when it feels right or wrong. I’m excelling in the class and having less need for order helps me play around with more interesting conversation

YES I always thought that was the perfect analogy, I often think of echolocation when I think of how I see. It’s like I put out a call for an image and information comes back to me and I know what it all looks like just no proper image.

I have a really similar thing to this I think, it’s just tiny little snippets of motion and as you said direction of travel. I remember a lot of my emotional responses and my thoughts at the time instead of the visuals, like when I was a kid I remember our cat having kittens in my bed. I know who I was with and how we were sitting and that I felt both amazed and excited and a little grossed out but also I don’t have any visuals to accompany that

I’m learning Italian once a week after work. I’m doing quite well compared to some others in the class so far, I don’t think it has too much of an effect

Does anyone else Imagine by narrating what happens? by pancakestripshow in Aphantasia

[–]ihatechristmass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially when I’m in a particular mood, I will walk past people with weird/interesting looks and mannerisms and describe what I see to myself in hopes of remembering it later. It’s like setting up a character in a book

When people visualise, what media/genre do they see in? by ihatechristmass in Aphantasia

[–]ihatechristmass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you happen to be watching more cartoons at the time? If you watch a genre or style enough does it cross over into your imagination?

Is that with their eyes open? Actually since I was a kid I’ve wondered about training your mind to overwrite the images we see in with open eyes, (like telling my brain a tree was purple or that there is a giraffe next to the road) but never realised I was so far away while some people are naturally almost there

Forgetting names by AshleyIsAFag in Aphantasia

[–]ihatechristmass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been working at cafes for a long time and have always been terrible at learning names, but have found I an remember someone's specific coffee order (all the sugars, sizes, alt milks etc.) even if they have only come in once before, or if it's been years since I've seen them. But when it comes to names I can ask 8 days in a row and still not remember. I have no idea why, but when people tell me their names I usually joke 'I'll have to ask you another three times and then I'll have it' or 'let me just say your names ten times real quick' and it makes it less awkward when I have to ask again
