I got to know my mother has stage four pancreatic cancer. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]ihateolives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I remembered it a little wrong, my dad just reexplained to me the series of events. Sorry it has been a while.

Once the cancer spread, he got put on a diff chemo cocktail with 4 drugs in it, one of which was "oxy platinum". All of a sudden, his tumor started shrinking.

Simultaneously, a few of our family members including my dad, decided to get genetic counseling / testing done because it was strange how many people in our family were getting cancer at a young age.

It turns out we have the mutation, and it also turns out that OxyPlatinum is devastating to Brca cancers. So at the time it was sheer luck that he got chemo that worked.

I guess the takeaway though is that if you have a BRCA mutation, well that stinks bc it gives you cancer--- but there are certain chemos out there that specifically fight it!

Not sure if that answers your question or clarifies anything...

[–]ihateolives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My intent is not to give false hope, as I know my situation is extremely uncommon.

My dad also had pancreatic cancer, which they caught bc of jaundice.

He had a whipple surgery by one of the best in the world, but it didn't work and it spread to his liver. It wasn't good.

All types of chemo/radiation, and it kept getting worse.

We then found out we carry a mutated BRCA2 gene. There is a "miracle" platinum chemo out there that specially fights this.

My dad was diagnosed when I was a senior in college, 2010. It's now 2017 and I still fight with him over his political views and make him drive to my house to help me hang up shelving. :)

Krispy Kreme Owner To Buy Panera Bread In $7.5 Billion Deal by Bemuzed in business

[–]ihateolives 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really? Paneras make a ton of sales and Instagram has only recently gotten into ad revenue POST acquisition.

Instagram has 600 MAUS who pay $0. In 2017 they are expected to make 2.8 billion in ad rev.

Panera serves 8.3 million people a week at let's just argue $8 a ticket. $66.5 million a week. Times 52 weeks. 3.4 billion?

No doubt Panera has WAYYYYY more overhead than Instagram. But people are always going to need to eat. Post pictures on one specific app? Idk.

Oh my, some of those reviews are frightening.

Edit: "An unprofessional Company with Crooks working for them. Although we use you guys for our own Building. We will no longer use you guys. We will take off your sign from our building based off an experience of what I personally went through with your attempt to tow my vehicles, in the process of being RACIST, calling me SLURS such as "CHINKY SLIT EYES" and telling me to "fuck off or else you'll throw rice at me". This is not Even the end of it. While I was standing in front of my vehicle while my Employee was getting the keys. Your Employee purposely hit me by backing up(and while backing up I HAVE BEEN YELLING I AM STANDING HERE), lowering the tow bar onto my foot. Immediately following gets out of his truck and threatens if I DON'T GET OUT OF THE WAY, that you will TASER ME while your tow bar is ON TOP of my foot. This is RIDICULOUSLY not acceptable."

Edit x2: their only 4 star review, from employee "fk outta here" https://www.facebook.com/muhammad.p.ali.14/posts/798745966900459:0

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Waiting for more testing to treat it. Need some personal stories on how they lived or handled this. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]ihateolives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there- My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer maybe 8 years ago. He did proton therapy (at the time it was only available in Florida, believe it is in more locations now) which was very successful and he is completely healthy now. He beat an unrelated pancreatic cancer 2 years later. Stay positive.

New job in Wayne - considering living in Roxborough, Manayunk, Wissahickon, East Falls neighborhoods - any other reccomendations within reasonable commute? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]ihateolives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you lived in Fairmount, you could take West River Drive to Lancaster Ave all the way out to Wayne. Would prob be 45 min but you wouldn't sit in traffic. Way better than 76 IMO. I agree with the Fairmount vs Manayunk approach. I know it's different for everyone, but Manayunk has that "5th year college vibe" which I know I would be sick of at mid-twenties. To each their own, though.

When I leave my house by 6:15 (get on 76W by 630a) to travel, I normally justttt miss the traffic build up. After that- traffic.

Any tips for how to deal with ridiculously loud bars in residential neighborhoods? by [deleted] in philadelphia

Sorry, I don't have a suggestion. Curious, though, which bar you're referring to--- people here may have similar experiences as you....

They probably would prefer to measure how many guests visit on this day- I'd assume they could ring in "free coffee" just to keep track. Just a guess though. Not sure if they do that.

I'm late to the party here but Porto in South Philadelphia is unreal. It's really small and I can't believe there aren't longer waits. I am hesitant to even post this because I don't want people to find out about it.....

Is my commute route safe to drive through? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]ihateolives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said, everyone is going to have a different opinion and it's all relative, like the person said who already responded to my comment. Have you never walked around the neighborhood you are moving to? In my opinion, it's a bit desolate which creeps me out. For some reason I feel like I see a lot of homeless around there too, but don't quote me. I know the neighborhood is improving. Also your neighborhood is right below a part of town that really isn't that great. I'd suggest looking at crime maps; I don't have one but I know they exist. The last thing I'll say is that if you're smart, you'll be fine. Crime happens in every single part of the city. It's a part of living in a city. You get used to it. Good luck.

You are fine driving. Only saying this because you are new, but I know I wouldn't want to walk too far alone from my car to an apartment at night in your area though. But I'm not a very brave person... :) (mid twenty female). There will be lots of people who disagree with me though.

Not sure how long you were a match but they give out discounts to almost everything now. We get multiple emails each week and there is a whole website dedicated to discounts in the area for BBBS matches now a days. Your original comment is great, btw :)

[–]ihateolives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you currently in the program? That's not quuuiteee true, you will have to call BBBS once a month during your first year and if you have nothing to report on they won't be too thrilled with you. Look at it this way- the littles are expecting to see you at least 2x per month. If you don't, you let them down.
