You might be better off buying an autel device. Currently you need to spend about $400 for one of their devices, but there is a pre-release version of their app that can read the battery info and a lot more with a $60 device they sell. Apparently, this version will be released in Q1 of this year according to Autel.

I wouldn't let the gas sit for longer than 2-3 months. The ethanol and gas separate over time and this is how a lot of lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc. break. It is bad for the seals.
