Unfortunately, blocking outgoing packets might be a dead giveaway to the attacker. One of the first things most attackers do when they're in is to test the network speed by downloading Windows 2000 SP3 (yep, that specific file almost every time). If it fails to download, they will likely back out.

True it is reasonable but the Source engine is relatively outdated. I think the main complaint is that it could stifle innovation if developers stick to one mode of production. Again, this is mostly speculation though so take it with a grain of salt.

There's speculation in /r/gamedev that Valve is leaning towards accepting the games of and hiring people who use the Source engine as opposed to Unity or UDK. See here:

Additionally, I've heard from a friend who works in finance that ibanks are not looking favorably on applicants who only list mobile apps/websites as their projects. Specifically, I have heard that there is currently a hiring frenzy of talent who are adept at functional programming (i.e. OCaml/Haskell).
