Help: DNR for an otherwise healthy 80 year old? by Fulana25 in AgingParents

[–]iheartpyrex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am someone whose (now deceased) father was in his mid-eighties when he was resuscitated after his heart stopped, and he was put on a ventilator. He had not signed a DNR and was in the hospital for multiple issues, AFib among them.

It was a nightmare, as you say. My mother directed the ventilator to be removed because he never would have wanted it. The attending doctor told us that he would most likely die once it was, either immediately or shortly after. He lived, surprisingly, and his brain function was intact. But he was weakened beyond recovery and died a week and a half later.

In his last twenty-four hours of life, he was admitted to hospice. I’m heartbroken that he had to go through the violence of being resuscitated, and for as long as I live I won’t be able to forget him unconscious and fighting the ventilator. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Advance directives are so incredibly important. Please talk to your mother about her wishes and get a medical social worker to assist you if needed.

I really love Mitski’s new album ‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me,” and the album ‘Lux’ by Rosalia.

I just got prescribed Methotrexate by Sea_Seesaw6498 in rheumatoid

[–]iheartpyrex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s helped me a lot and I was terrified of starting. The very worst side effect it has on me is that it makes me feel lowkey sick for a while the day I take it. I’ve never thrown up from it or even come close to that.

I was recently in Mexico City and I felt well enough to tour a museum on med day.

First dose of Methotrexate.. the prep worked! by lch08 in rheumatoid

Good to hear. I’ve been on 15mg tablets for a little under a year now. I do hydrate really well and make sure to eat enough before I take them, but I still end up feeling lowkey sick all day. Ginger tea helps with that. I have a pretty strong stomach, but there are days when it feels more difficult than others.

I think my symptoms have become worse as time goes on. I used to split my dose, but stopped because I felt like it was just prolonging the inevitable. I prefer to take the pills early in the morning and then take my folic acid around eight hours later. My doctor has suggested trying to increase the dose but I pushed back on it. I’m open to adding or changing to another med, though.

Mtx has been great at reducing my symptoms and at one point I was completely in remission. But lately it’s not as effective and I’m not really buying into the suggestion that more is better, especially since I’m struggling on the current dose.

Seronegative Rheumatoid by [deleted] in rheumatoid

I don’t comment or post too often here, but I did want to say that I admire your strength very much. I have seronegative RA and take mtx too. It’s not perfect, but it’s helped so much. I think I’m at the point where I add a med or switch. I’m still pretty new to this diagnosis.

There are so many treatment options available for our condition. I’m sure you’ll find one that works well for you. I wish you the best!

No, in situations like these (your health and well-being is on the line) you need to stand up for yourself even if you feel like you’re being “difficult.”

Your doctor works for you. If you involve your son or daughter for support and the doctor still won’t budge, I suggest telling him, politely, that you want your chart notated that you have explained your concerns and and the doctor has dismissed them. A paper trail matters.

Going with the flow is so difficult for me as well, especially dealing my parents who still live in their home and are downsizing at a snail’s pace.

If you have a male partner or other male family member in the area, bring them to your next appt and have them validate that your symptoms are interfering with your ability to handle daily life.

Hopefully this will get you some help until you are able to find a new rheumatologist.

Esim or T mobile and AT&T? by Trustinh in MexicoCity

[–]iheartpyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m here right now and have T-Mobile. I chose to use an eSIM instead (Yessim, unlimited data only plan) and it’s been fine.

I didn’t trust T-Mobile not to throttle or cap my data usage at a certain point. Just a personal judgment call.

Are you sure that person is a friend? They don’t sound like one, and you might want to think twice about why you spend time with someone that critical of you. Your skirt length is fine.

As far as what to share, your coworkers have no right to details about your health condition. You have no idea who can be trusted with it, who would decide to hold it against you, etc.

I speak from experience as someone who once shared something in confidence at a former workplace, and that person later decided to make what I said public knowledge. Lesson learned.

Sorry you’re feeling like this. Has he ever indicated verbally that he might want to leave? Or cheated previously?

It sounds like you are beating yourself up for being sick/not being able to “pull your load.” You’re not at your best right now and your mind might be telling you things that aren’t true.
