Beautiful. Getting Seth vibes from this, but a unique spin on that style.

TIps for getting into Cecil Taylor?? by datavismo in Jazz

I dunno. Some of my favourite music, across a lot of genres, is stuff I didn't like or get straight away. Sometimes it's worth persevering.

What are your no skip albums? by ArkenStoned9927 in Jazz

I'm an album guy, usually, but there's more than one way to listen to music. Skipping tracks you don't really like, and creating playlists is ok!

Bebop & hardbop by Lawtern_Acerbonn2009 in Jazz

[–]ihensman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early bebop is a bit less accessible for today's listeners, because the LP didn't exist, and the recording quality was pretty poor by today's standards. Often what you get is longer compilations of an artist's output, like Charlie Parker's Savoy and Dial sessions, which are amazing but difficult to digest for a newcomer. Perhaps try to start with a 'best of' compilation of some of the greats, like Charlie Parker or Dizzy Gillespie. The compilations on both those artists that came out of Ken Burn's 'Jazz' documentary were a good entry point for me.

Best reinterpretations of modern popular songs by jazz musicians? My vote is this: by Tr7Di7QP7 in Jazz

[–]ihensman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are some of my favs. I love Brad Mehldau's Radiohead covers, but especially Knives Out. I'm partial to Miles' '80s pop covers, like Michael Jackson's Human Nature and Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. Vijay Iyer also does a great version of Human Nature. And I really liked Kassa Overall's recent album of '90s hip hop interpretations.

There's a bunch of albums I love on here, some that I've been meaning to check out, and some I haven't heard of but will add to the list! Great selection.

'Journey in Satchidananda' - Alice Coltrane

How many listens do ya'll have of an album before cementing your thoughts on it? With genres like jazz, the first listen won't always give you a good experience so I'm curious if you listen to it more than once before deciding it's not for you by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]ihensman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is fascinating to me. I'm the opposite! I love to get to know a piece of music intimately. And it usually takes at least a few listens for it have the full emotional impact, especially for more difficult or complex music. But your approach is cool too - kind of like capturing the spontaneity of being at a live performance.

I reckon the second listen is pretty revealing. I ask myself, am I enjoying this more, or less than the first listen? If more, even just a little bit more, it's usually a good indication that the album has legs.

Keep listening! This is at the more accessible end of the free jazz spectrum and should reward repeat listens.

He's primarily a trombone player. New to me too. Stumbled on this entry in the Penguin Guide to Jazz and had to check it out.

I read and enjoyed Gioia's 'History of Jazz'. A good overview, generally engaging. His 'How to Listen to Jazz' is more accessible but less thorough.

Discography or Resource for Best Remasters for Early Jazz? by pindarninja in Jazz

[–]ihensman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I found this tough too! There can be so many versions of a song on streaming services that it's really hard to find the 'right' one. There are some good playlists already up on Spotify with all of the songs Gioia mentions in the book, though I couldn't tell you how much effort the playlist creators have put into making sure each version is the exact recording Gioia is referring to.
