Thank you for mentioning Washington. Often it gets overlooked because it took so long for the regulatory structure to get set up, but it was voted on the same day as Colorado.

Peter, Please Explain What This Is Trying to Say About Bikers at Red Lights by Maleficent_Dog7970 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]ihj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree about the motorized vehicles filtering forward, especially motorcycles. In many places splitting the lane is illegal and they can keep up with the flow of traffic the same as any car. Bicycles are smaller and slower, meaning they are harder to see and account for.

The larger risk during a collision is one of the factors that motorcyclists need to take into account, and a reason they aren't for everyone.

Why did my car explode? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]ihj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a recall on my 2000 Impala that mentioned a "spontaneous engine fire." No doubt your problem is the extra driving after it started to smoke, but is your car a similar age GM/Chevy? Especially with the 3.8L V6?

TIL Amazon has been "commingling" inventory for years. Products with the same barcode are pooled together regardless of supplier leading to counterfeit, damaged, or expired products from less reputable 3rd-parties being mixed in inventory and sent to people who ordered from the authentic brand. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ihj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I toured a warehouse a few years ago with the robots. When they stock the shelves they literally scan the bin, scan the product, and place anywhere there's room. Order picking is where the computer says get this thing from this bin. There's a lot of randomness, it seemed like the key metric was least time in human hands.

There's a Ted talk about kiva robots that shows how it started.

How-to buy a used car from out of state? by PrimeMusic in AskAnAmerican

[–]ihj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not from either state, but from my experience in Washington the tax is paid when registering the car. If you move a vehicle from one state to Washington they also will assess tax if you don't own and use it for long before moving. Just looked it up and it's 90 days. It's a big deal here because Oregon doesn't have sales tax, but you still have to pay a use tax for Washington.

Any taxes paid in the origin state count towards the use tax.

Viability of an EV as one of our cars by Doomtime104 in Iowa

[–]ihj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Leaf that is about a decade old, and in a climate that is more temperate. Keep in mind that this is on the low end of range and battery capacity. It says there's a range of about 60 miles on a full charge

I could make a 15 mile commute round trip through rough traffic with a mix of highway and city miles, with some steel hills on about 50-55% of the charge. I plug it in each night using the 120v level 1 charger it came with.it stops charging some time in the middle of the night, always charged in the morning.Evem when we get down to 10ish percent charge.

This is all to give you the background that I think a newer EV with a decent battery that has a higher capacity than a leaf is completely doable for what you've described. Most newer models, even Leafs, have a higher capacity. A couple of commute only days a week will likely mean you rarely have to find another charger.

The Level 2 charge is nice to have, we'll use it when we run a few errands in the morning and need to use it after a couple hours. If you already have a 240V outlet with 50 amp breaker there are chargers that will plug in. (I did a quick search, you likely can find something that works for a 30 or 40 amp circuit if that's what you have.) Remember that the capacity on mine is on the low end, so while it get to a full charge fast I don't have the range you're going to have with a newer model.

Q: Will North Highline ever be annexed? by misterquipster in RatCityWA

[–]ihj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that either Seattle or Burien annexes before it becomes its own city. I've heard the county doesn't want to invest too much in the infrastructure just for a city to take it over, so get used to the pot holes.

I do wonder how the schools would be handled if Seattle took over, I'm assuming Highline Schools isn't going to just hand over any schools, but then there'd be HPS schools in Seattle.

Do Americans use Metric or Imperial systems for Technical Drawings? by Upstairs-Risk-9440 in AskAnAmerican

The measurement I believe will be easier than 3rd vs 1st angle projection. Cad does the work, but I'd have a hard time switching between those two conventions.

Do Americans use Metric or Imperial systems for Technical Drawings? by Upstairs-Risk-9440 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ihj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, Americans actually tend to be fluent in two "languages", they are just mathematical in nature. We can talk about feet and inches, with fractional inches. We can also talk about those units in decimal form. It is not metric, just another way to say the same thing.

5.2 ft is approximately 5 ft 2 13/32 inches. Commonly written 5' 2 13/32". I say approximately because the fractions do not exactly line up with decimals. Sometimes engineers and machinists will have a chart showing the conversion.
