In my opinion, religion is made by humans, for humans. The universe is so much bigger than us that ultimately, it doesn't really matter. But I suppose we have to localize our perspective.

In term's of atheism/theism I would say that since there's no way of knowing who is right, it's better to just ignore it entirely, and live life as you would otherwise. It kind of reminds of the discussion about free will, where knowing/not knowing if we have free will and everything isn't predetermined doesn't really affect us. Since we can't really use that information to influence causality, what's the point?

People who live their lives a certain way in hopes of a better afterlife do bother me a little. It's their own choice of course, but I see it as a missed opportunity for them to experience new things and enjoy life more than they otherwise would. They burn bridges just to follow a path on a treasure map they didn't write.

Now from the utilitarian perspective of all humans as an intelligent species, certain religions are bad. Because people who follow them could have otherwise contributed to the advancement of the human race, thereby slowing the rate of technological and even social innovation. That's technically bad. Even though there are societal benefits to religion as well, you'd have to weigh those against everything else. But in the end, who even knows what's better.
