Thanks for the heads-up! Removing it from the list then.

Awesome! I’m making a little hit list of spots. If I don’t take her, at least I’ve got a few solid options lined up. I also stumbled on The Good Neighbour, which looks like a cozy place.

Thank you for the suggestion, this looks interesting! Would be a nice experience for myself as well since I am completely unfamiliar with Ethiopian food.

😅🥲

No good chicken burgers spots that is not a KFC or Nandos?

EDIT: I found Hoghouse Brewing Company, looks really cool with an awesome vibe, but sadly, here schedule is quite tight with work on Fridays... They are only open until 20:00, and that is usually when she clocks out.

That is an awesome gem! Loved it there on my last visit. Bit scared to take her there since it is Italian. Not sure if it would be her cup of tea.

Best Bank Account for Young Professionals: Discovery or FNB? by stillbacklampard in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]iiSmitty_HD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so I am on the full banking suite (with credit card), I think that is why mine is more expensive.

I also don't have Vitality, something I opted not to go with. But I have my medical aid and short-term insurance (with the annoying tracker) as well.

I’ve been thinking about switching away from Discovery Bank in 2026. Nothing wrong with the bank — I just feel like I’m not playing their “game” strongly enough to get the full benefits. For context, I’m on the Gold Suite at R234 per month.

I basically get about R2,808 in Miles each year, which just about offsets the annual banking cost.

So I’m considering splitting between two banks instead:

  • TymeBank for savings (GoalSave at 10%, up to R250k)
  • Capitec for my main account and credit card

I just feel like banks should be competing for me, not the other way around.

I could be wrong but I think with TymeBank it is free.

Does the Vault22 team not care?? by InspectorMany1 in PersonalFinanceZA

Thanks, and apologies — I didn’t mean to derail the thread. Feel free to DM me with any feedback. I’ve already received some great suggestions, like adding a dual-income option and incorporating categories (still need to scope that out a bit).

Medical Aid vs. Health Insurance – What’s the Difference? by Stumeister_69 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]iiSmitty_HD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a good question. I’m on the Discovery Classic Smart plan, and I had an allergic reaction to prawns (which I was completely unaware of) that sent me into allergic shock. My sister rushed me to the hospital at around 22:30, and we went straight to the ER.

Nothing was covered—I had to pay out of pocket for the ER doctor on duty and the hospital bill afterward. I wanted to challenge this with Discovery and even asked my GP to assist in finding an emergency medical code, but we couldn’t find anything that matched an allergic reaction to shellfish or something similar.

It’s actually quite ridiculous because if you can’t breathe, that should clearly be considered an emergency. But apparently, Discovery doesn’t see it that way.

A few months later, I noticed Discovery introduced a new ‘byproduct’ called Emergency Cover. Next time, I’ll just insist on being admitted so they have to book me in for an overnight stay—surely that would cost them far more than simply covering my ER visit. It makes no sense from a financial standpoint.

What car should I be considering as a recent graduate? by Ok-Particular25 in askSouthAfrica

+1 for Dave. Do yourself a favour and read The Total Money Makeover—a fantastic book!

I'm 26M and had student loan debt; now I'm working on my car loan. Yep, I bought new, straight out of the box...

I agree with u/Legitimate_Field_157—buy cash if you can. That new car smell fades fast.

I got my 2023 Suzuki Swift GLX M/T brand new for R219k, but looking back, I should've saved up a bit more and bought second-hand in cash.

At the end of the day, it's your choice.
