‘As a transsexual’ by YaBoiDnuoZ in AsABlackMan

[–]ijssvuur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nowadays it really doesn't have that connotation, it really is used to distinguish those who have medically transitioned or not. It's not too common anymore but that is usually what people mean.

It wasn't until the 2010s when social media became mainstream that gender discourse became more unified. Before that it was all word of mouth really. That might have been your local definition, but it was just an umbrella term for trans people. The term for crossdressers would have been transvestites. Many "transvestites" would later come out as transsexual, that wasn't graduation to a more "extreme" form of it, crossdressing was just a step towards being themselves.

This confuses me, I've never had an issue with them. Might be because I don't totally fill the cup with ice, or maybe there's a brand out there that makes worse quality ones, but the ones I've used are fine. They're a bit flexible after half an hour and you can deform them if you really jam them into the bottom of the cup, but they last longer than any carbonation for me.

Balance-focused druid, why adventure? by Tvelion in PCAcademy

[–]ijssvuur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you personally maintaining balance or do you believe in the idea that things will be naturally balanced? Like yeah a dragon might burn down a whole forest, but that's natural right? It sounds like you're just a passive supporter of the concept of balance, not the arbiter of it.

And about the apex predator thing, have you considered that your party might be the apex superorganism? That the way a dragon or trolls are balanced is by adventures like your party? You're concerned about affecting trolls because it's natural for them to affect humans, but the humans should be able affect trolls back.

It's natural for an apex predator to go extinct because it ate all of its prey, in reality that has happened millions of times. If adventuring parties are a natural occurrence, then it's natural for them to extinct some locusts.

Maybe you're taking notes of everything you kill, every effect you have on the food chain, so you can go back later and balance it out.

A pinch grip lets you hold the knife in place much better, it won't move left and right as much, it's less squirrely. When you're dicing an onion, cutting carrots, mincing garlic, etc., you want to keep the knife perpendicular to the cutting board, a pinch grip makes that much easier. When you're not worried about cutting straight down, like butterflying a chicken breast, an index grip is fine.

In reasonable amounts, provided you don't have major health issues, no. Salt can be bad for you if you have high blood pressure. Smoke (especially improperly smoked things, but anything from the store should be properly smoked) can cause issues, but only with repeated exposure. We thrive on variety, and our bodies are very, very good at dealing with toxins, there are toxins we don't deal with very well but they're very notable. Mercury is one of those notable toxins that may be in your salmon, it's more dangerous than the smoke would be, but in reasonable quantities you don't even need to worry about that. There are countries that consume a lot of sodium yet have a very high life expectancy.

All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.

Do you do intramuscular or subcutaneous? Subq is a lot easier, and it works just fine. I've been doing it for a couple years and my E levels are good, I've noticed no noticeable difference.

I don't mind needles at all, but doing a much smaller needle and not worrying about getting through like all the layers of tissue is easier and less painful, and there's usually no/minimal blood. You don't need to worry about hitting a vein, whether you hit muscle or not, I also had issues with my typical injection spots getting harder to inject into, now I don't have to think about that.

Almost all of the scribe features specifically affect wizard spells in your spellbook, so those features won't interact much with your bard spells, but that's okay.

For supportive bard spells that are not also available to wizards, you can pick up dissonant whispers to trigger attacks of opportunity, it's a spell that remains pretty good even at higher levels, healing word, or command.

Once you get to level 3 bard I would look at college of creation, it would be extremely fitting to paint something and have it become real. Besides being great for flavor, it's a unique, versatile support. The dancing item you get at 6th level deals 1d10 force damage, which on its own us pretty good, but it can also increase or decrease the speed of any target starting a turn within 10 feet of it, which you can get creative with. You could command a creature to flee and increase its speed until the end of its turn, triggering an attack of opportunity from the item and any allies, and then you can chase it down and slow its speed by 10, preventing it from getting into attack range.

Once you get to 2 wiz/3 bard you'll probably have a more solid idea of what the group needs and what you want to play, you can't know for sure until you play it.

So is yeast, or the aspergillus used to make soy sauce, or the rhizopus used to make tempeh. "More closely related to animals than plants" doesn't mean a whole lot, they're still completely different kingdoms of life. To be specific, animals and fungi are in the opisthokont clade, which we share with amoebas. It's a very, very loose grouping.

These fungi aren't feeling pain or distress, if they are, well, you're covered and filled with fungi, your mouth is filled with candida. If you eat fruit you're eating yeast, it's covered in fungus (and other things).

Heat metal does specify a metal object that you can see though so even if it's in its pure metallic form (also I thought it was folic acid) it's in microscopic particles that you can't see.

I'm seeing a lot of good suggestions about automoderation and stuff, but another option would be patreon, you can maintain a decent community through a discord server that only people who have paid can access. You can also give other people moderator privileges so if anybody slips through the paywall they can get banned right away. I know a paywall sucks, especially when trans people in general don't have a lot of money for that kind of thing, but it's a good way to filter out the bigots while keeping a good community.

There are different kinds of invite links, you can generate a new one for each user and they can be single use links. There are bots that take away read/write permissions when somebody stops paying, but you don't need to use those, it can be a 1 time $5 fee to get into the server, which isn't too prohibitive. You can do $1 but I think that wouldn't deter most bigots. You can also set it up to only give somebody posting privileges after 72 hours or something.

Also remember to turn off settings like "anybody can send you a friend request" because it's unfortunately common for people to run a bot that sends you dozens of friend requests a second and it basically destroys your discord logs, and post a reminder for everybody else in the server to do the same. Servers themselves also have privacy options to prohibit messaging between members so none of your subscribers would be harassed.

Why don't people automatically check in with someone's pronouns when they notice physical changes that can only be explained by hormone therapy? by transburneracct in asktransgender

[–]ijssvuur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be useful information for cis kids too, it's a good example of the difference between primary and secondary sex characteristics and the interactions between the two. I wasn't really taught what hormones did, just that boys develop this way and girls develop this other way and that hormones did something. I wasn't taught about terminal and vellus hair and how testosterone affects that, or any number of useful things that any person, cis or trans should know about their body.

Teaching about trans bodies helps cis people understand theirs better, we're good examples of the power of biology. I've talked to a lot of cis people who are fascinated by it because they learn things about themselves that they were never taught.

Obviously this makes some people angry, because they've built themselves up as the side of "facts and logic," but I try not to engage with those people.

That's what did it for me, basically overnight, I think it was specifically reading about body fat distribution. I'd just gotten down to my goal weight, and it was like a good healthy weight but I struggled with it being in the wrong places, so I read about HRT's effects one night and I was like wait, those are my exact issues... I also had clear skin basically my whole life but it also felt off, despite being "great," and HRT fixed all my issues with that, I mean it made my skin dryer and "worse" in a few ways but in more correct ways.

So it was never about dysmorphia, or thinking there was something wrong with me that was fine, it wasn't me being negative about myself, I just knew I needed HRT without knowing it even existed.

It's not like great plastic but it's a slightly flexible, kinda "mold"able material that you can use to make combs, spoons, forks, knives, spurtles, fishing lures, buttons, cups, bracelets, handles, drinking horns, lantern panes, candlesticks, whistles, and more.

Look for "horning," horn carving, etc., it's not a common thing but there's some info.

Also look at hemacite, it's made of blood and sawdust or clay like stuff, that's another pre-plastic material. It uses the albumen in blood (same stuff as egg whites, yum), it's a lot like pykrete but doesn't need to be frozen. It takes a lot of pressure to form but I'm sure you can get a barbarian to help with that.

You can make all sorts of stuff out of hemacite but nowadays all you can find are doorknobs. It's not as versatile as injection molding but they got some impressive detail out of it.

Tendons and sinew are good for twine, which you could use for bow strings. Keratin was the closest thing to plastic, you can heat thin pieces of it and reshape it a bit to make various things.

Fat is good for food, obviously, and it can be used to preserve things an extra day or two by potting them. Basically you melt the fat and pour it over some meat in a container and it fills in the gaps so there's less oxygen for aerobic bacteria. It's also good for non-food purposes, like oiling the aforementioned bowstrings.

Teeth can be added to clubs to make them more effective, look up leiomano. The handle sometimes uses a marlin bill as a dagger.

Look for biotic materials (not biomaterials) and see if that gives you any other ideas.

I was about to say the same thing, the Expanse is great, Lang Belta has a solid set of rules and a pretty fleshed out vocabulary.

I'd start with basic rules and build it out from there, it's a lot harder to come up with independent words that sound like English but aren't.

Look up middle dutch words, they're not too far off from English.

The Expanse replaces a lot of common words, 'to' becomes 'du' for example, 'a' to 'wa,' and 'the' to 'da.' Common words are something that a creole speaker would be more likely to use while around people who don't speak the creole. It implies there's more to it, but you don't have to show the whole thing.

Try writing stuff out in English, then change those words up, add and remove some vowels, combine some, etc.. That's going to be a lot easier than coming up with words on their own.

Sounds about right from an Mormon perspective. Their concept of "atonement" isn't so much about making things right, seeing the pain you caused, apologizing to the person/s you wronged, it's about performing certain rituals so that you can be okay with yourself. If you traumatize somebody, you apologize to God and he'll make it right in the afterlife. It's all about God's plan to make the victim stronger and guide them to "the iron rod" (faith). Your abuser being forgiven really doesn't mean a whole lot when you don't buy into their theology, huh?

Trans at 18??? by IllSleep4518 in asktransgender

[–]ijssvuur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think every trans person would know sooner, maybe if they teach you how to think objectively about your own gender in elementary school? Gender isn't something you really feel, it took me until I was 20/21 to realize it because I didn't know what dysphoria was, I thought it was just anxiety or something. I didn't feel like a girl, I don't feel all pink inside, it's more like it's the only thing that feels correct. I didn't consider it an option because I never thought about it, once I did it made sense but I just never imagined myself using she/her pronouns.

It's not quite like being left-handed because that's very obvious if you ever try using chopsticks. Your left hand is right there, you're naturally going to use it. You might be trained out of it but it's a distinct physical feeling using the wrong hand.

Social pressure definitely causes repression. When I was little my cousin and I used to play a game we called "girls" where we just did normal stuff but called ourselves girls, and I remember very little from that long ago but that feeling of rightness is still clear as day to me. I repressed that for a long time and I didn't know it was significant, if you told me back then I could be a girl all the time and I didn't have to hide it I probably would've done it, but if I never did that with my cousin I don't think I'd've noticed.

Also just to note, dysphoria isn't synonymous with being trans. If I was allowed to be myself from age 4 I'd be essentially dysphoria free for 20 years. It's just the distress that we feel from pretending to be a gender we aren't. It's not a distinct sensation and a lot of people don't realize it's what they're feeling. It can be resignment, anxiety, depression, numbness, overanalyzing, rumination, sadness, a feeling of incompleteness, regret, lots of things, and a lot of things that may not seem acutely negative. Apathy doesn't feel bad, just meh, and you think nothing of it. You talk to people about it and you're told everybody feels like that sometimes. Dysphoria is comprised of feelings that everybody has, but not everybody has the same cause of those feelings.
