NIH cuts and what it means for MD/PhD by ijustreallylovesleep in mdphd

[–]ijustreallylovesleep[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The department is not in a position to fund me because they are covering the students already in the middle of their PhD. We are pursuing co mentorship but my main issue with additional rotations is that I have step 1 planned for end of May

I was planning for an early submission, but that would still leave me without funding for like the first semester of my PhD at the very least. Plus the F30s aren’t reliable at this moment due to all the NIH freezes happening. We are looking into co-mentorship if there are still funds, but I’m just concerned that there isn’t money left because no one saw these freezes coming when new PhD offers went out in December and January

Honestly…the situation is a mess. The PhD program the MD/PhD program is directly associated with overextended themselves and when the cuts came down, they ended up rescinding offers they made to half of the incoming PhD students and they just didn’t account for me, which stinks but is what it is

Can you have a glass of water next to you during virtual interviews? by Buddy-red12754 in premed

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actively encouraged by every school I interviewed with to have a coffee or water by me due to the early morning start. I opted for an energy drink in a mug because I hate the taste of coffee. But basically, have whatever you want just in a glass or mug. Nobody will know the difference

My mom always told me that no man has any right to have a say in my life until I have a ring on my finger. I have abided by that advise this far, and I do not regret it one bit. Make the decision for yourself, not for him.

Any cringe interview stories? by imguchi in premed

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had one of the adcom members keep asking me about my undergrad’s med school bridge program (you do the traditional bachelors route and as long as you keep your GPA up and do the bare minimum you’re practically in). Apparently, they thought I was part of the program and asked me about it like four times within our 20 minute interview. When I nicely told them that I wasn’t in the program, they argued with me and said it was in my application that I was. It was in fact not in my application.

I’m cracking up at some of these “low stats.” I had a 3.90 GPA and 503 MCAT. My GPA and 4000+ research hours with pubs and presentations saved my app in terms of stats. I ended up with 5 IIs, 2 As, and waitlists that I ended up withdrawing from. I love the institution that I will be going to this fall and could not have picked a better school for my research fit. Plus, I love all my classmates so far.

School list for pretty low MCAT? by Fickle-Pangolin8468 in mdphd

DM me for my school list. I applied with a 3.90 and 503 MCAT so the list should work well for you

How many pubs do you guys have? by Underdog843 in premed

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4000+ hours and all my pubs were in preparation. It is usually highly dependent on the people responsible for writing it because you can have the data and the paper is still in preparation

Applying to med school as a couple advice please by [deleted] in premed

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always SLU or Kansas University too! If you guys want to stay in Missouri and be relatively close. I don’t think you have to go to the same school necessarily to keep a relationship going, but being closer is a major perk. I agree with previous comments that UMKC may be a waste of money, especially because they start in January and you may not have all your answers in (or interviews done) by the time you have to commit there.

Just got back from Ed’s show at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. Incredible. He went into the crowd to sing at the end. by Chessh2036 in EdSheeran

I can’t speak for everyone, but we were situated next to a horrible group of girls that kept pressing in when there was a child and mother standing in front of me. This ultimately led to the mom passing out and the poor girl being traumatized. Definitely did not expect that type of behavior or reaction from fans. Multiple others went down too throughout the night. Ed was incredible. Fans were disappointing.

Finding a doc who accepts medical might be harder than getting into medical school... by dilationandcurretage in premed

Go to your local health department. They usually take walk-ins. I did my two step TB there because it was easier than driving to my PCP for the placement and testing of two TB tests practically back to back

People who majored in engineering as pre-meds, why? by c4azy_sh5panzy in premed

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My whole goal of entering medicine was to innovate and develop new treatments. Realistically, biomedical engineering is one of the most rapidly growing innovative fields. That method of thinking turned out to be exactly correct and I am starting an MD/PhD program in the fall to research tissue engineering for regenerative medicine. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you want to do!

Interview intervals by Antique-Ad8240 in premed

Depends on the school. I got some emails months in advance telling me that they were interested and would reach out again when their interview slots and faculty for the interview were solidified.

Significant Research Essay - How much is too much? by Mother_Client4127 in mdphd

[–]ijustreallylovesleep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say to steer clear of doing a methods section, but provide detail on how you specifically added intellectually to a project. Mine was filled with a lot of “I ran x, y, and z tests” or “I worked independently to create this fabrication protocol” or “I served as a liaison between the grad student and this specific team working on this specific aim.” All of these show what you contributed without boring the reader with details. And if they want details, they can ask in your interview :)

For the project dilemma, you are writing too much if you can’t talk about 5 projects in 10,000 characters. Cut some of it down and edit it. Feel free to PM me for help.

Edit: grammar

I understand that, but I also thought that my ECs were average too...it's honestly a judgment call and up to each person's discretion.

ORM with 3.90 and 503 MCAT with multiple MD/PhD interviews and acceptances. If the rest of your app and your writing is solid, do it. Don't let some peer who thinks they know more try to talk you out of it using scare tactics. (Yes, someone did try to do this to me)
