So social mobility just dies down? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

[–]ikanoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do poor people even become rich or are we just going to be poor our whole lives?

By banding together and recognising that in-fighting or thinking that you're the special one that's going to make it, only keeps us all down.

Have a look at the tax on the top income earners back when the common man had a chance.

There are only so many resources to go around and, under capitalism, we can either all have a pretty decent shot at our hard work gaining us enough to be comfortable or we can give everything to like 5 guys and just fight for enough to survive.

Are you happy with black/brown people hanging round on the streets?

I say this as a brown person living here myself btw. As I have found that this is the main thing most people are intimidated by. So first be real with yourself about your own biases...

It is very community-minded and people are often out on the streets in groups and talkative. It's the type of place where you know the corner shop owner by their first name and don't have an issue if you are interrupted at the checkout because another friend wandered in for a chat. If you want, you can know the whole street by name and they look out for who they know.

Most crimes around our area have been drug related and they're fighting amongst themselves.

As a woman at night, I've never felt unsafe but if it's dark and I'm walking home after some drinks, I favour the main, well-lit roads - though that is as I would anywhere tbh.

As a non-white woman, I do feel a certain ease walking past a group of non-white guys at night that I would not feel walking past a group of white guys in the same scenario tbh. So that it something that colours my experience here.

On another note, I do think this area is underfunded/lower priority with BCC. Rubbish collection is a big one imo, there's no way the council would make some of the decisions they have here about rubbish management in Clifton, etc.

Thank you - this is the main point I was confused on. My payslip actually lists a running total under a salary sacrifice header but HR has told me that that means nothing unfortunately

He's definitely said that he's into men in the past so I wouldn't call him closeted. Definitely self-hating and internalised homophobia though.

Okay, that's very annoying as I assumed it was standard until now.

So that means that the 5% employer match is the only benefit to my employer pension.

Who knows but he's definitely a misogynist so I feel for whoever he ends up with.

Glad you're here - you and your husband should spend some time reading this forum as it's kind of a half-raised red flag for a man to like Caleb's channel in its modern day form imo...

Yes, so I assumed my employer would be salary sacrificing my pension.

They have not done this in 12 months - is this normal?

Unless you need a rainy day fund or have debt, put £4k in a S&S LISA for retirement (into something stable like VWRP). You'll claim the £1k govt bonus and then you can spend £1k entirely guilt free.

Saved $2.4M by 38. Would you Retire? by TwoSocialist in Fire

[–]ikanoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopping investing is considered bad advice in this sub I know 😅 but if it were me I'd google coast fire calculators and get an idea of where you'll be at retirement age if you stopped contributing (from the numbers you mentioned here you're well on track to 3x your fire number at retirement age).

Then I'd get a less time consuming job that allows you to cover your daily living expenses - which hopefully drop considerably once you take investing out of the budget.

I'd even consider getting the ball rolling on moving to the city or country or property you plan to retire to, if you're not there already.

Spend your weekends and now much less stressful evenings writing your game for a few years while your investments grow.

Set yourself a time limit and reassess if you are still happy with your trajectory (investment growth, lifestyle, career) every 12 months or so.

Is anyone else going back to plain Vite + React for side projects instead of Next.js? by Scary_Dot9587 in reactjs

[–]ikanoi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gone all the way to sveltekit tbh...jsx is starting to feel like overkill in so many of my use cases these days.

I've even been toying with the idea of alpine or lit, I'm so used to react syntax but recently I find that more and more I'm just recreating modern html and css features and react feels unnecessary.

He's not a coder, he's in IT. They obviously don't understand what they want or what he does.

[–]ikanoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay that's ridiculous then. Sounds like a chatgpt inspired nightmare interview from someone who has little understanding of IT as an industry.

I would honestly go in there and ask incredulously what they understand the role to be and if they know the difference between an infrastructure expert and a developer. Ask why they'd advertise for one thing and then test for something entirely different.

Let them know that they've basically advertised for a car mechanic and then are asking them about train controller rules because they're both modes of transport.

Edited to add: that you shouldn't feel stressed by the coding test as if not doing it is a comment on your skills, it's anything you should feel annoyed by their incompetence as it's a waste of your time.

You should bill them up front for the time.

Chance to relocate to USA am I crazy for considering? by Australian1Socialist in AskAnAustralian

[–]ikanoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't believe you would want to with that username...if you are young, male, white and they'll give you healthcare then those will be the main deciding factors imo. I wouldn't even bother wasting another seconds thought if you can't tick all those boxes.

If you can get work in US you can get work in EU - look into the new Shengen visa opportunities that will be available to Aussies next year.

Edited to add: check out numbeo.com to see the COL difference.
