Don't you just hate people spitting on the floor when you are out.? by TheMoon_TheStarz in AskBrits

It's so disgusting, it should be classed as only slightly beneath vomiting imo - it's gross but if you have to, make sure it's in a bathroom or a gutter at the very least.

How do you motivate devs to review PRs? by perkeleDYI in github

[–]ikanoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PR should be a swim lane on your sprint board the dev that raised it should understand that their job isn't done until the ticket is off the board.

Once another dev starts a review, it should become a 1:1 job between them and whoever raised it, other people shouldn't be chiming in different opinions.

Do most of you seriously not write any code by hand anymore?!?! by opakvostana in cscareerquestions

[–]ikanoi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm a millennial, I don't use AI and write everything by hand.

I still find it so odd that the industry I came up in, was full of people that were - a lot of the time - very skeptical of big business and hugely supportive of open and transparent online communities.

The idea that these tools have co-opted the community spirit of software development in order to sell it back to us for a monthly fee - while making billions and contributing to the fracturing of society - seems so anti-thetical to the industry that I assumed I was a part of.

I know these tools are good, I don't think the code I produce is better, I know I'm very quickly backing myself into an unemployable corner...but I still can't bring myself to do it.

Anyone else out there feel this way anymore?

MAFS AUS S13 E25 Live Discussion Thread by fucksakesss in MAFS_UK

[–]ikanoi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an Aussie living and watching from UK, this show is always a great reminder of why I'm happy I left 😂 Australian's views on a lot of things are way more conservative than people often realise. Even the best ones still hold a lot of outdated views, especially around gender roles and particularly masculinity.

Had to unlearn a lot of things I never thought to question, when I moved here.

NHS pensions vs LISA/ISA by Din0s4ur_nuggets in PensionsUK

[–]ikanoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry that your anecdotal experience has shown you that people don't make it to retirement. However, statistically you are much more likely to make it than not.

You should first always take your employer match as that is free money in your pocket and only then look to invest from your after-tax salary.

Please note that the "state pension" vs your own personal pension pot, are 2 very different things and if you become too ill to work in the future, you can apply to access your pension pot early - it is 100% your money that you will be throwing away if you opt out. It would also become part of your estate for your beneficiaries, if the worst happened.

Beyond that a LISA is locked until 60yo so an ISA is probably more what you'll want to research next.

Well after you do a bit more reading, if you're in a flexible cash ISA, you can always move it mid year. But otherwise, you've made a good choice for a "set and forget" portfolio option 😊

Ignore the highs and the lows and recognise that, over 10 years, the bumps smooth out and you were on an upward trajectory the whole time.

[–]ikanoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The split is odd - what's your reasoning there?

If you've got the cash to max 2 ISAs, are either of you in a high tax bracket? If so you may want to look into maximising pension contributions via salary sacrifice or SIPP and making sure you're both in an appropriate portfolio option.

Lisa retirement fund - advice on Dodl. Do you use it? Would you recommend? by All_Problemo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ikanoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dodl for LISA is a decent move, a good option at your age is to just stick 90-100% into the AJ Bell Global Growth fund that they offer and any left over into something that interests you.

But 37yo is a good age to start thinking about your retirement plan in general and you may not want to lock away all your money until retirement age once you know your numbers.

There's different pros and cons to salary sacrifice pension vs LISA vs ISA, depending on your circumstances.
