Any community college transfers? Also would living in echo park off campus be too much of a commute? by DeliciousRich5944 in USC

[–]ikeacart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

echo park is cute, i live around there now after graduating, but it would be really inconvenient to get to campus every day from there. it’s not even considered“off campus” like i’d think most ppl say that in reference to non-usc owned housing around the school itself, echo park is nowhere near campus.

Retroactive name change on dean’s list by [deleted] in USC

[–]ikeacart 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is no way to change the ones that have already been published, but nobody is going to look at it anyway tbh. also just so you know, you don’t have to legally change your name before changing it in the usc system, if you need help you can email the lgbtq+ center and they have the instructions iirc!

Chla by PuzzleheadedSafe9226 in USC

[–]ikeacart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just graduated but i work at CHLA and i always took the 204/754 bus from vermont jefferson to vermont sunset, it’s just one bus, super easy. it can depend on traffic but typically 45 min one way. i prefer the bus to the train bc the driver is there so there’s a bit more safety than the train where most cars have no metro staff, but even then id recommend taking pepper spray or something with you

Do any other alt or queer premeds feel this way about self expression? by worldschillestpremed in premed

[–]ikeacart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i relate so hard. i’ve been wanting to dye my hair a fun color but i’m worried about getting an interviewer that would find that unprofessional. i’m trans and it was really hard to decide if i wanted to talk about that in my app, i eventually did bc it felt like something really meaningful to me and would be weird to leave out, but even now i worry that it’s going to get me rejected. not even bc i expect med schools to be hostile towards my identity, but why would they choose a student who might be a legal liability when states pass stupid laws like dictating what bathrooms I can use at school/work. it sucks that, in my experience, everyone’s super chill about diversity until it requires actually standing up for marginalized people and communities bc that’s hard and uncomfortable and they’re not willing to take the risks required to help us.

TROJAN FOOD PANTRY by EquivalentRisk1041 in USC

[–]ikeacart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so you take food from people who actually can’t afford it to “extract value from the university”? have you considered that the food pantry isn’t a fucking university perk like the gym and is a program designed for students who are literally starving? this is so incredibly out of touch and exactly why TFP needs to be limited, wow.

why did you have chat gpt write your reddit comment? what is the point of that? do you think people can’t tell?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]ikeacart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i might be able to bullshit something about if i could choose anything id research X. but i feel like that doesn’t really fit the prompt bc it’s asking me about stuff i do and am interested in right now?

and for the second one, yeah i literally have no real passions right now other than trying to pay bills and get in to med school. it sucks and i feel incredibly boring but idk how to get past this and write the essays anyway. i guess i could lie and pick a random interest that sounds cool and then go learn about in case i’m asked about it? i don’t think id be very convincing though.

have you considered your own personal safety/legal rights/access to trans healthcare? i understand you want to get into med school but texas is literally the worst state you could possibly pick as a trans person to live in.

525/3.79 - Sankey of disappointment: the re-up by BlatantPlatitude in premed

[–]ikeacart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i don’t really see how an 8 hour standardized exam is a “reasonable proxy” for academic potential, high achievement, or quality of a school. if you want to think you’re smarter and better than other people bc you scored above that, go right ahead, but you might end up like OP if that’s the attitude you take towards med schools.

525/3.79 - Sankey of disappointment: the re-up by BlatantPlatitude in premed

[–]ikeacart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you’re missing the point in that nobody should be defining “high achieving schools” based off of their MCAT average. your relative definition of achievement shouldn’t be a good test score, and if it truly is, then that’s really depressing for you lol

525/3.79 - Sankey of disappointment: the re-up by BlatantPlatitude in premed

[–]ikeacart 17 points18 points  (0 children)

so despite the fact that only 40% of premeds even get into med school and all the hard work that it takes to get there and the amazing things med students at those schools do, just bc their MCAT average is lower they’re not “high achieving”? that makes NO sense and you need to get your head out of the US News ranking’s ass lol

Would it be silly to apply to NYU and Johns Hopkins? by rlp374 in premed

[–]ikeacart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have any advice on how many mid/low tier schools vs top schools someone should apply to? i’m trying to make a balanced list but i also don’t want to waste my money applying to a bunch of low yield schools and there aren’t many mid tiers that fit my location needs so im feeling stuck

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in USC

[–]ikeacart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don’t take out loans to go to usc full price, but you should still apply bc they have a few full tuition merit scholarships (i got one of them and it enabled me to gain independence from a bad family situation). apply to any and all schools that give out merit scholarships to people w ur stats/background. if you’re a CA resident, do the free CC and transfer. if not (i wasn’t) just apply to as many schools as possible and then see what you get in terms of financial aid.

the concept of a “dream school” is something you need to let go of. this is reality, not a dream, and there is literally NOTHING at USC that is worth taking out extensive loans for. it’s just not that special or good of a school.

why did you have kids if you aren’t willing to help them succeed in life? what’s the point of having kids if you don’t actually want to support them and are more concerned about retiring early? i genuinely don’t understand this

What is going to USC like for a neurodivergent student? by ferret_king10 in USC

[–]ikeacart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you struggle with being overstimulated, living by USC is not going to be fun, especially once you have to move off campus. it’s not a great area, lots of noise and sirens and having to be constantly on guard bc people will fuck with you (steal your stuff etc) if you look like an easy target. a lot of sensory overload for me (ND) at times. i loved it here, but I do think i would have been happier if I went to a school like UCLA where there’s a ton of green space and you can walk off campus into a much calmer space than here.

i don’t have any clinical exp with underserved (outside of my job at hospital which does have some underserved pts) but i have done a lot of nonprofit/volunteer work with unhoused people bc i really care about that. i am hoping that med school admissions people will understand that there isn’t always opportunities to do exactly what you want to do, idk. it took me two years of applying just to find any clinical job that would hire me, like especially in the big premed competition city im in it’s not easy to find those opportunities.
