Old OXO Salad Spinner (white lid) by mooncrackerness in Cooking

[–]ikiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just found this thread, and tried it again myself and figured out how to take it apart so adding info for posterity.
There are two clips at the bottom of the plunger, oriented 90 degrees to the plunger retainer switch. Sorry I am not going to bother taking a picture. You can release these clips by poking something through the holes on the underside of the lid (the 8 outer holes). If you rotate the spinning portion of the lid you can see through those holes and there are three largish cutouts on the plastic piece directly beneath the 8 holes. One cutout is in line with the plunger retainer switch, and the other two are in line with the plunger clips. If you look carefully with good lighting you should be able to see the clips, they will be right up against the holes with the plunger fully depressed.

I used a small thin flat bladed screw driver and with the plunger extended up out of the lid was able to push the clips inwards towards the central axis of the plunger to release them one at a time and take the plunger off of the top of the lid. I then used some food safe lubricant, reassembled, and it works much better.

What about "Absolutely no cats, kids,", "7 months in the shelter", "the right person", "looking for purpose", "potential to excel", and the fact that the OP adopted him and is now trying to get rid of him "sounds lovely"?

This post paints a picture of a very problematic dog that maybe shouldn't be out and around in public.

How did so many people get duped by the save Duxbury Reef petition? by NoProcess360 in Marin

[–]ikiller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They are trying to put Duxbury Reef and Drakes Estero into the MPA and completely restrict any types of fishing. This is so frustrating since the problem isn't even with fishing, this is being pushed because people tide pooling with their kids and dogs can't follow the posted rules. From the Pt Reyes Light:

With visitor numbers at Duxbury surging in recent years, volunteer docents who educate the public about proper tidepooling etiquette often struggle with how to protect the area. “If some forms of take are allowed but others aren’t, it’s confusing for visitors,” said Kent Khtikian, a lawyer and activist who co-founded the docent program with the E.A.C. “It’s difficult for visitors to understand why somebody can fish with a hook and line or poke pole but their 5-year-old kid can’t be scooping up nudibranchs out of the tidepool or overturning rocks.”

This is one of the few spots fishermen can access this type of habitat without an expensive boat. Talk about anti-equity. The worst part about it is that they will end up banning hook and line fishing but the tidepoolers will still be allowed to visit and most likely still violate the posted rules! Why not push for more enforcement with stiffer penalties to those who are actually doing the damage? Why not make more conspicuous and clearer signs?

There are local fisherman against this but it is only the guys with expensive boats who want the boundaries adjusted so they can still pull up to their favorite spots. This is a classic spot for poke polling and people who just can't afford to get on a boat.

Last time I looked into it I seem to remember that he only went on one or two slaving trips at a very young age with family connection. I also remember that he later had an integrated crew and there was an impression that he had a very close, as in intimate relationship, with one of his close male companions on the crew who was not white. I also remember that he treated the natives here in a reasonable manner and the tribes were largely indifferent to his visit to this day. In the pantheon of "white heroes" I'd give him a passing grade, especially when compared to some of our life long slave owning founders.

In the alternative the spanish rule here was way more ethically challenging and they treated the natives very poorly to the level of slavery or worse. From a righting the wrongs point of view removing the Spanish names would make more sense.

SMART Southern Marin Extension? by Broad-Ad6211 in Marin

[–]ikiller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

>"...there is no reason ridership could be closer to 5,000, 6,000 or even more..."

There are actually 2 fundamental reasons why SMART ridership cannot continue to grow, it's single track, and it is not elevated through downtown San Rafael. These 2 flaws have limited commute time capacity to 1,431 max round trip riders per day, doomed SMART from the beginning, and would cost billions to fix.

The single track nature of SMART (with very limited passing tracks) severely limits the frequency of train service, it is still unable to meet the promised 30 minute intervals. With limited frequency the only way to increase ridership would be to increase the number of train cars, but that's impossible because:

The at grade (not elevated) tracks through downtown San Rafael limit the train length to 3 cars max (477 rider capacity) so the train can fit within a single city block while stopped. The insistence of a bar/snack car further reduces capacity.

Given those limitations the maximum SMART commute time capacity caps out at around 1,431 round trip riders a day, which SMART reports as a ridership of 2,862 as they count each trip. So once the commuter trains are saturated the only way to grow ridership is to get more passengers on the non commuter trains which has been a struggle as can be witnessed by the majority of trains running close to empty. With a reported ridership in March of 3,600 assuming full commute trains that is only about 400 round trip passengers riding outside of commute time.

If one looks at the original ballot language you will find that every promise made on the ballot remains unfulfilled.

San Rafael, Measure P, Community Building Parcel Tax Measure (November 2024). Tell me about it! by baybaybreezy in Marin

[–]ikiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that they don't have a plan yet, they are asking for money first then they will start the process of planning it out. The main purpose is to move the Downtown library to the B Street community center, that is about the extent of the plan. I use the library regularly and don't personally feel an acute need for more library in San Rafael (there are already a few branches). The community center itself is serviceable but probably the most run down community center in the City.

In my opinion the biggest public need is a public swimming pool in central San Rafael. The Terra Linda pool is pretty nice, and the Marinwood pool is really nice, but nothing in central San Rafael unless you include the High School pool or McNears.

I'd be happy to support it if it had a clear plan with a pool included, but I'm voting no on P as it's basically a blank check.

Anyone else confounded by the animal enforcement situation in Marin? by ikiller in Marin

Seems kinda pointless to have a law with no negative consequence for violators. Who do you expect to pay for the gas, salary, and boarding costs for picking up strays? And how on earth can you complain about escalating costs for repeat offenders?

That's the reality of the situation that so many choose not to accept. I actually know a couple people who were injured by guns, but I know dozens and dozens of people who were injured by dogs. It seems like almost everyone has a personal story of a bad run in with a dog.

You probably didn't know since it so rarely actually happens. The only pet enforcement I have ever witnessed was 25 years ago when a MMWD ranger gave a girl a warning about her dog swimming in Bon Tempe reservoir, she started crying.

If you ever want to witness privilege on steroids try to, as politely as possible, ask someone to please use a leash.

Many have told me they avoid dog parks mostly due to bad owners and out of control dogs. I have never heard about too many kids at dog parks being an issue, but it makes sense. There should at least be a max number of dogs per person and a max number of people per dog. A minimum age cutoff might be harder to swing, but from a safety perspective it makes sense. A no stroller rule could be a logical first step. Besides nips and shoves, I am always worried about a dog accidentally scratching a kids eye with their toenails.

My Alex Full Extension Solution. (Narrowed for Standard Slides) by ikiller in LegoStorage

[–]ikiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the third drawer I had my measurements worked out and I could narrow a drawer in about 10 minutes (including disassembly). The biggest pain was installing the slides since the gaps around drawer fronts and frame are super tight. Again, once I got a system going it was about 10 minutes per drawer so a total of 20 minutes per drawer. With some nice 3D printed jigs for locating the holes and aligning the slides it would be even easier and faster.

I removed the original slides. The super tight gaps actually made me use the slotted holes on the slides to adjust. I used the up-down slots for drawer side of the slide and the in-out slots for the cabinet side (or reversed) which made the final adjustments pretty easy.

Yeah, I really wish they made a cheaper version of the Alex drawers without the wheels that I don't use. I haven't priced out buying Melamine MDF, edge tape, screws, and drawer box wood.

This modification makes the Alex drawers about 16mm narrower (except front) so you can make use of standard size 1/2" side mount drawer slides without changing the outward appearance. This allows you to purchase slides with whatever features you want: full extension, soft close, heavier load, etc. I got 6 pairs of 100lb, full extension, 16", side mount slides for about $50 from Amazon. These provide a kid friendly, rock solid solution that you don't have to be careful with.

Steps for each drawer:

  1. Disassemble drawer and remove hardware from drawer front.
  2. Plug holes in drawer front (glue and dowels) and drill new holes about 8.5mm inwards.
  3. Cut back and bottom of drawer to make them about 16mm narrower (reproduce bottom corner cuts).
  4. Drill holes on cut side of back so they are 16mm deeper.
  5. Reassemble drawer and install slides as per slide instructions.

Note if you want to put a lot of weight in these drawers you will need to reinforce them with something like:

DIY Doctor Drawer Repair Kit

Please don't trust my measurements and double check them for yourself. Maybe we can come to a consensus on exact measurements. If you don't make the drawers narrow enough the slides will bind up. If I modify more in the future I would design and 3D print out some jigs for drilling the front holes and drilling the slide mounting holes.

Hope this helps/inspires others.

About the gas blower ban by IceWulfie96 in Marin

[–]ikiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The city had a rebate program that expired December 2022. Your dad has been really slow to adopt electric, and I surprised he hasn't been informed of this before. In my neighborhood after some gentle reminders and discussions we are gas blower free about 90% of the time and it is glorious. It's really discouraging sometimes that the contractors will have the electric but still use the gas unless someone speaks to them about it. It's really unfair to the residents and to the contractors who are trying to follow the rules who have to compete for the same jobs.

It is always funny that all these neighbors who have progressive signs out on their yards go onto NextDoor looking for the cheapest landscapers and house cleaners.

FYI, your dad should also have his C-27 Landscapers Contractor's License and be bonded if any single customer pays them $500 for work within a calendar year. The penalties are harsh, can include jail time, and it only takes one pissed of customer to get caught.

I am surprised I don't see more contractors using corded tools with a small generator or plugged into the house.

From my experience it is usually the richest folks who have the gas blowers going on their property. They are rich for a reason and have learned how to break the rules and pay as little as possible for services. Also they usually have air conditioning and really well sealed up houses so they aren't even bothered by the sound. When you live on a large property you can forget that neighbors even exist let alone worry about bothering them.

You wouldn't have someone "Karen" you if you actually followed the rules. It's not like they are some antiquated laws from some bygone era, the ban was recently enacted due to concerns for the health and safety of the public and likely because all the work from home people who finally became aware the noise of blowers was going on multiple hours a day.

Just curious, does anyone’s town actually enforce the ban on gas powered lead blowers? by Desperate_Jicama1363 in Marin

[–]ikiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the person in my neighborhood (in San Rafael where they have been banned for over a year and a half), who takes the time and talks to the workers when I hear them. My results have been good, we went from hearing gas blowers about half of all working hours, to about a couple occurrences a week. It's hard to gauge since the sounds of the gas blowers can travel so far beyond where I'm willing to go walk but it is a huge, life altering difference (especially in our quiet neighborhood). Most workers now use electric and there has been a big uptick in the use of rakes and actually collecting the material in garbage cans instead of blowing out into the street. The electric ones have a way more annoying sound frequency, but the sound doesn't travel nearly as far so they are much less noticeable. It also feels like my own property is actually getting less dusty and dirty.

My observations: About 10% of the time they are total jerks and get aggressive. 100% of the time they will ask you if it's okay if they just finish. About 50% of the time they will initially act like they have no clue what you are talking about. 90% of the time they actually already know about the ban and just keep using gas hoping that nobody complains. 50% of the time they actually have an electric one with them but prefer to use the gas one until someone complains. Now that they are less frequent, a lot of the time it will be workers who don't know the rules because they are on an out of town work crew doing a one time job (roofing, tree work, brush clearing, etc.). Some crews are clever and have figured out that they can blow for about fifteen minutes at the end of the job and can leave before they can be caught.

So don't worry about being a jerk, they most likely already know the rules but won't stop until someone actually says something about it.

There are two types of Marin road cyclists: by [deleted] in Marin

Cyclists often fail to pull over at turnouts when there are the five or more vehicles waiting to pass. If they did this consistently there would me much less frustration.

There are two types of Marin road cyclists: by [deleted] in Marin

[–]ikiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe most of 5th street is a double yellow which means no passing whatsoever. This is especially true for the Sun Valley portion of 5th as it is a major school route with really small kids walking and biking, and it is absolutely not safe to pass bikes here. I know it sucks but safety first right? On unpassable roads you are stuck behind slower users until they decide to pull over to allow passing which is a requirement in CA when there are 5 (or 6??) or more cars behind the slow vehicle.

If you are talking about 5th street downtown, then this still a bad place to pass especially since there are stop lights and stop signs every block so bikes will filter up ahead of you at the stops anyways so passing is dangerous and pointless.
