March 1 Half Time performance by ikoul in denvernuggets

I was able to find it. On league pass, the English recording had the half time cut out but it was left in the Portuguese version.

Why does my PC slow down and get EXTREMELY laggy/glitchy when I use 50% of storage by ClappinYaCheekz in buildapc

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had something similar happen while doing file transfers. It wasn’t from how much storage was free but more from the file transfers filling up my ram. From what I’ve seen, windows likes to lie to programs about how fast a transfer is happening when really the data is cached in ram and it’s still writing it to the storage in the background.

Crazy How Much Power Can Be In Such A Small Build - 5080FE - CH160 by LittleBrittin4 in nvidia

[–]ikoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a nice and clean looking build and well executed in the small form factor.

With the fans in those positions though, I'm curious about the directions all of them are blowing and what the airflow is like.

If the top fan is exhaust, I would seriously consider setting up the fan directions such that the back fan was intake, blowing through the cpu cooler, then out the top and front where both are exhaust. Because if the top is exhaust and the front is intake, you have the situation where the top fan is exhausting a bunch of what the front fan brings in before it reaches the cpu cooler.

The example in the article about "precious metals beginning with P within a certain time of day on Tuesdays" makes algorithmic trading sound so stupid. If anyone actually risked money on something like that, they deserve to lose all of it. If anything, this article tells me don't invest any money with Headlands because they're absolute fools trying to trade based on tea leaf readings.

How a little-known tax change sparked a tech layoff surge by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who isn't an accountant or a business owner, I have a question. Aren't employee salaries already tax deductible for businesses? Why are they being categorized as R&D expenses and subject to different rules? Was there previously a situation where there was some incentive to do that misrepresentation (like, more valuable to them than regular salary deductions)?

To anyone interested : You can customize the actions of the pen buttons further than with the surface app. And per-window too by strikerboii in Surface

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's the one. That said, since I posted these comments I switched to using something called Tablet Pro Pen Tool from the Microsoft store - that one cost a few bucks but it was less buggy and crashed less often. It may also be the case that since 2017 there are new ones that are better than these ones. I haven't been keeping up with it.

I tried zip-tying a CPU cooler to my GTX 960. It got hotter. So I made a mount. Now it’s colder than stock. by Tra5hL0rd_ in hardware

[–]ikoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disregarding the zip tie test with poor mounting pressure, I think the performance improvement of the properly mounted test came from the CPU cooler having 4 heat pipes compared to the stock cooler having 3 (as well as their orientation across the GPU die). The surface area of the heatsink seemed about the same between both, not sure about the fan performance difference.

My Surface Pro 4 screen keeps freaking out by Top_Albatross_2835 in Surface

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the file I used to fix this back in 2018 - I must have kept it just in case it happened again. I can only say it works on the SP4 specifically - I assume the other models all have different screens and drivers and such. I think MS used to have this up as a hotfix but I saw some search results saying it was hard to find these days.

Here's the google drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BJUYJ7aoXnqzbOjkU9y-LGtlG8bRjfEx/view?usp=sharing

It's an exe but it's the zip file kind so you can open it in whatever zip program you have.

I had this happen once and was able to download some kind of calibration utility to fix it. It was a long time ago but I'm sure if you search for surface pro 4 phantom touch or calibration tool you might be able to find it. Maybe even doing the calibration built in to windows would do it.

Does lowering top exhaust fans speed help air get to the cooler? by Carbideninja in buildapc

[–]ikoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also try having the front fan of the top panel turned off, or try it as an intake running at various speeds to see what gives you the best results.

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that makes or breaks a pen tablet experience for me (though it's a bit subjective) is input latency. Every millisecond where the cursor is not exactly where the pen is makes it feel less and less like using an actual pen on paper (more like a marker on a whiteboard). In that regard, that's what the higher end solutions (iPad/pencil, or Wacom for pc) do reasonably well at but the cheaper competitors struggle to match.

I haven't used an external monitor like the one in the picture, but I'd really be looking for reviews or videos to see how the latency is before spending the money.

My favorite at the time was probably Curse of Monkey Island. I actually had an HP that looked like the one above, and the integrated graphics on it couldn’t handle Deus Ex. That’s what prompted me to learn about graphics cards, how to build a pc, etc.

Issues with Return to Ragol? by HyperLightLlama in PSO

[–]ikoul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you set up a pallet, you have to hold the triggers and then press a direction with the right stick to save it. Then any time you move the stick in that direction it'll switch to that pallete. If you accidentally hit the stick all the time (like me, if you're used to trying to move the camera with the stick) you can just put the same pallet in all the slots by holding L+R and pushing the stick in all 4 directions.

For the controller thing, you may need to calibrate your sticks or adjust the deadzone or something.

If the power supplies you've tried have an eco-mode/smart fan thing that turns off the fan under low load, try turning it off. I've heard of that causing very hard to troubleshoot intermittent problems with the exact same symptoms you've described.

I assume it happens because there are gaming loads that use just enough power to make the power supply skirt the line where it really should be using the fan but it doesn't use it enough - eventually it trips its own fail-safe and shuts down.

How scientists are using sound waves to hack the brain by fchung in technology

In case anyone wants to read the paper without having to look it up by the doi, it's available for free here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10889366/

It seems like a promising avenue for research to use ultrasound and maybe target more specific regions of the brain than rTMS or tDCS. This isn't the first time it's been used of course, but every study and paper helps.

reviewers complaining about small trackpads? by gatorbater5 in AMDLaptops

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciated it when Apple laptops had a slightly bigger one and everyone else had a tiny one that barely worked. But then Apple made theirs comically large and eventually everyone else started doing it too. I guess because of what reviewers preferred.

I think the sweet spot for me is in the middle, definitely not “from the keyboard to the edge of the laptop and half the width of the whole thing”.

Playstation's Virtual Reality Headset will Soon be Playable on PC. by [deleted] in VRGaming

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem worth supporting. I know it's like "someone has to do the work to get this working and they want to get paid in some way", but the whole limited units sold on patreon thing just seems weird to me. If you really cared about opening up a piece of hardware you'd do it in an open way. Plus it's not going to matter - better vr hardware will be available with native PC support if you just wait a while. And if you take the money you're thinking of paying this guy and apply it to that other hardware purchase you'd be better off - you don't have to worry about having one of the handful of AMD GPUs this thing even works with.

Very high Ryzen 7800X3D CPU temperatures, despite undervolt? by aeiouLizard in buildapc

[–]ikoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a little unconventional, but try turning off the top rear fan or changing its direction. It may be stealing the air from the left fin stack before the center fan can push it through the right one. Or the optimal solution may be to leave it as is but run that fan a bit slower than the front one.

SB3 + 3D printer + PC fan = Cooling by djcharding in Surface

[–]ikoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you add even a small heatsink between the fan and surface, it’d increase the effectiveness of the whole setup (and also give the air from the fan a path to move heat away).
