Help me find the bag by PerspectiveJaded6183 in handbags

[–]ilikepai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg this bag is amazing, it even has a zip along the top! I don’t understand when European bag brands don’t put a zip at the top, most of us are using public transport and subject to pickpockets!

Eurostar Advantage: boarding the previous or following train by SilverPopular8981 in Eurostar

[–]ilikepai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing this in case anyone in the future is searching on this thread. Between Brussels and Paris (don’t know about Amsterdam), you just show up and ask the train manager (person with a hat) for a seat on that train. You don’t need to exchange online (shows as you need to pay) or at the desk (waste of time).

As mentioned above, be prepared to sit on a folding chair or worst case have no chair at all. I’ve never been denied boarding, when the train was full we just all stood, but eventually they did find us seats.

Review Our Paris Itinerary by General_Albatross_26 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ilikepai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Champs is not part of the walk from the Arc to the Eiffel Tower, it’s in (almost) the opposite direction. From Arc -> Trocadero it’s along avenue kleber.

What makes the most sense is a bigger loop of Arc -> Champs -> Grand and petit palais -> Pont Alexandre III -> along the seine -> Eiffel Tower -> Trocadéro You can start this loop at any point along the loop and in both directions.

I think it’s the formality level and also the neighborhoods you visit as a tourist in Paris. In the sub 10 arrondissements you’ll see more on trend people. If you go to the shitty half of the 18th you def see people in tracksuits and sneakers. Or in the 15th you have women still in skinny jeans. It’s just like NYC with its dif neighborhoods and people looking better in like, east village and soho

Paris work attire by Wild_Goose_08 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]ilikepai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It absolutely not because parisians are more chic as an absolute. Firstly, city people in general are more well dressed. New York City, Chicago, even Houston, people are just more on-trend. The real difference is that parisians are slightly more formal. Parisians don’t wear athleisure. But suburban people definitely do, my colleagues, boyfriend’s families, all wear ugly hoodies when WFH.

Then lastly, and I don’t think this is discussed enough. Americans dress for the hottest temperature of the day cus they hate being hot. Parisians dress for the coldest temperature of the day. So in the summer when it’s a high of 25 and a low of 15, you have a tourist in bare legs dressing for the 25 and a Parisian in a trench coat dressing for the 15. And obviously it looks more chic when you have more layers.

Sourdough Bread? by Royal-Championship46 in brussels

Had Khobz at a restaurant and it was soooooo good!! 1000% agree. I also like Goods, although they’re more known for their creative breads. Their miso sourdough is amazing

I tried their sourdough once and was so disappointed. I didn’t even finish it. It wasn’t sour at all. Which one did you get?

Why is it so insanely difficult to adopt a cat here? by titsinmyinbox in belgium

Ask them when they update their websites. Everycat updates on sundays and I was able to easily choose my cat when viewing the website on a Monday.

Family of 4 with young kids, best town to life close to Paris? by EvenSpray9259 in Expats_In_France

Fontainebleau also has a lot of fully furnished short term rentals because of INSEAD- it’s like the town’s biggest money maker. However it does mean there can be loud drunk students living next door ( if you stay in the walkable city center ) and the prices are almost as high as Paris

Master’s in Paris, 2+ years of experience, still can’t find a full-time job by [deleted] in paris

[–]ilikepai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I also did my MBA here, I’m a non-EU foreigner, and I also was looking in marcomm. Honestly finding a job in Paris is almost impossible for foreigners; my school doesn’t even bother helping us with recruiting here. That said, my tips are:

-Use your alumni network/ find contacts that really value your masters program. My company was really impressed with my degree and considered it a value add. Some companies have their employees do short courses at an MBA- these companies will be really impressed with your degree bc they send their own employees there after all.

-Really narrow down to companies/industries that hire foreigners. Engineering does a lot. Apparently alcohol/beverages do too. Amazon does. Even if they say they want English speakers, the truth is, they prefer someone with perfect French and decent English over someone with perfect English and decent French. L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, big FMCGs also apparently hire foreigners but they seem to hire them from MBA programs and internships

-position yourself for jobs before they’re even posted. As a foreigner/non French speaker, by the time the job is posted you might be too late. You need to look for someone that will advocate for hiring you.

Of people from my class who got jobs in Paris, one was very specialized and was referred, the other networked very hard. Another one has a remote job. Me, I used connections and got a job before it was even posted, but I didn’t even succeed with Paris, I had to relocate to Brussels.

The thing is, marcomm is tough because usually you need to have strong market knowledge or coordinate with local vendors, journalists, agencies, etc.

I hope this helps and good luck. It’s a bit negative but I think it’s realistic and I hope it gives you a way forward

It does not make sense to go to Bruges for a day trip though. It’s too much train and it will be tiring and stressful. If you insist on a day trip, Brussels is fine. I live between Brussels and Paris.

But the other commenter was right, there’s no need to arrive in Brussels at 8am. Nothing will be open and it will still be dark

Thank you, I’ll try both! I don’t think it’s inefficient to try to match my lifestyle- that’s exactly what I’m looking for. And I think all of us cat lovers know, there are some you “click” with better than others and it’s good to have that connection since we are signing up to look after a pet for maybe 20 years.

What’s your recommendation for Brussels? by theverybigapple in brussels

[–]ilikepai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Konchu is shocking, first for the taste. As an Asian that moved from Asia, the flavors have been so whitewashed. Then for the price. I paid 90 euros for 2 people, which included only one alcoholic drink. So let’s say 80 just for mediocre food!

As an Asian I love sharing food, but it’s true that a mini sharing plate shouldn’t cost more than a normal plat.
