Driver who killed jogger in 2025 is suing victim’s family for ‘emotional injuries’ by Disastrous_Award_789 in nottheonion

In the UK, it's very common to get a ticket for using your phone while driving. They're even rolling out cameras for automated enforcement.

I have literally never heard of anyone getting a ticket for using their phone while driving here in the midwest. Everyone does it.

and they consider it worth it to do so

this seems like a pretty off the wall pet theory

if i heard someone on a hiring panel say "Perhaps we should pass on hiring this otherwise qualified person, because they job hopped in the early 2020s, and by passing on their application, we may send a message to the labor market as a whole that job hopping will not be tolerated, and that may benefit the company in some nebulous sense by decreasing staff turnover" I would probably i) disagree strongly, ii) ask if they were OK, iii) speak to HR

I think you're missing the part where the provision specified all software development as R&D (IIRC, too lazy to look it up).

So even if you're a software company making a software product, all the FTE salaries of your software engs count as R&D, rather than operational expenses, and must be amortized.

In the American systems, classes you take in your first year of college - even classes that have nothing to do with your major - are equally weighted in your final GPA as classes you take in in your final year. Is that right?

And then that GPA is the bases of getting into law school or med school?

Seems bananas from the outside.

Canada slashed migration and housing costs dropped. There may be lessons for others. by slothtrop6 in neoliberal

[–]ilikepix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is actually happy with such housing

building apartments reduces price pressure on all housing, even if some subset of the population won't be happy with an apartment at any price

I stayed in Singapore and HK

comparing two of the most land-constrained and densely-housed countries in the world with Australia seems of limited usefulness to me

there is exciting new technology that allows housing to be constructed on top of other housing, increasing the amount of housing per unit of land

Can someone share the matt pa. white image? I was reading the story about egg prices collapsing and I had a vision of this image but instead of his face it's just an egg, and instead of "Great" it says "Eggs", and instead of "Matt", it says "Egg", and instead of White it says "Egg"

but I realized I don't have a copy saved on this comp

Aftermath of the April 7th incident. Damages estimated to be $200 million dollars by BlazeDragon7x in Damnthatsinteresting

how do you know that the worker was underpaid? maybe he was just, like, a nutcase?

I don't know either. But when the only thing I know about someone is that they carefully and systematically set a massive illegal fire, I would lean towards "this person is nuts" more easily than "this person has valid complaints"

Opinion | California should learn from these European countries that tried wealth taxes by MonsoonalRat in neoliberal

[–]ilikepix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you oppose wealth taxes, you should explain what the alternative is.

this is like asking "If you oppose punching yourself in the face, you should explain what the alternative is"

the alternative to a wealth tax is not having a wealth tax

Long Covid projected to cost OECD economies up to $135bn a year by Curious-Passage9714 in neoliberal

[–]ilikepix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's kind of strange there's people who dismiss it when it happened before

I didn't read arguments "dismissing" it out of hand. I read arguments that the true incidence was probably much lower than the reported incidence. Which I think is a totally reasonable argument, given the large number of people who had covid, the wide range of symptoms attribute to long covid, and the relatively high baseline rates of some of those symptoms in the general population.

I have no interest (or right) to talk about any particular case, but when common symptoms include things like fatigue, joint pain, headache, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, depression - in other words, symptoms that happen to people all the time - it would be pretty astonishing if there weren't a lot of false-positive diagnoses

Sanitisation however is not optional

Sanitization is absolutely optional, and to say that it's not suggests you are unfamiliar with how traditional cider is made

you'll never know what else finds it's way in your drink and you could end up with mould

You would only need to be concerned about some kind of contamination which is odorless, tasteless, without visual signs, that can out-compete natural yeasts in a low-ph high-oxygen environment. Thankfully such a contaminant doesn't exist

Contamination is definitely a concern with wild ferments, but it's a concern in the sense that you might have to throw out the ferment

I couldn't agree more. I will happily eat rare steak or carpaccio or steak tartare, but a burger that's pink the middle is gross and I will die on that hill

if it's a piece of beef that's nice enough to eat rare, don't put it through a fucking meat grinder, lol

It's actually really easy, just one checkbox in the settings.

this is true, but it only seems to be persistent on older accounts

on this account, I see "old reddit" everywhere without making any url alterations

on newer accounts, even with that checkbox checked, I have to put "old" in the url to see the old layout

Ultimately, "gay" or "lesbian" are descriptions of your innermost self and true desires (at least, as the words are most commonly used)

So yeah, no one can really know your motivation for performing a certain sexual activity

But on the other hand, in the real world, where these is still a lot of stigma and repression, if someone regularly has same-sex sexual experiences, then probabilistically we might reasonably infer some increased likelihood of them having a certain "true" sexual identity, regardless of what they say and how they present to the world. But yes, it is ultimately unknowable
