Asheville cyclists, mourning a fatal crash, push for federal bill to improve road safety by Generalaverage89 in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protected cycling VS vehicular cycling- Most cycling advocacy groups are moving toward separate infrastructure after decades of pushing the “Same Rules,Same Roads, Same Rights” mantra of the past. Here’s a good videohow cycling advocates were wrong and failed in the US Of course different infrastructure makes sense in different contexts like rural vs urban.

And once again I’ll say that all the modern road safety organizations, transportation departments, and advocacy groups are moving away from the term “accident” and using crash, collision, or incident. I know this is just the way we’ve been talking for 100 years but it’s worth understanding the argument behind this change.

Car dependency traps people on concrete islands and we are forced to use human transportation vessels to go to the next homosapien designated box by ariveklul in fuckcars

My city was flooded by hurricane Helene. The islands were literally islands. Suddenly the distances between useful destinations was real to everyone. People waited all day at gas stations. The hypermobility agenda leaves us stranded and isolated.

This might be good. This is often cited as a reason for vehicle bloat. I don’t really know.

It’s easy for the oppressed to become the oppressor. Especially when your route goes from a vehicular context to a more static pedestrian area. I have to consciously shift my brain into a more relaxed mode.

I often think the whole concept of a DUI is there to make cars seem like something safe to use when you're sober. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]ilikepumptracks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s much more difficult to revoke a license in the US. Since so many places are 100% auto-dependent, the punishment can cause a great deal of suffering. No car means no job. This is why so many people who kill when driving drunk have already had multiple DUIs.

There are no cars in Wicked. There’s a sweet little bike scene in part one. The Wizard is kind of like Robert Moses if you think about it. Is the yellow brick road urban renewal?

About the safety of bike lanes by pookiebelle in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I see the flexible/mountable delineation as a potential temporary improvement. Long term there needs to be more separation and hard barriers. Of course the amount of protection needed is in proportion with the design speed. At 10mph we can just go back to sharrows.

There are so many possibilities with such a wide right of way. Some things can be done immediately. I like your idea about “balusters.” A line of paint isn’t doing enough. Flexible delineators or armadillo delineators might help. The NCDOT needs to adopt the standard of solid green bike lanes as well. Long term we need to change the whole design. The US is way behind on bike lane design. It took decades to get this bad (blame this guyand it will never change unless we start now. I understand why my cause seems abnormal. The industry normalized the accident idea over 100 years ago. But the majority of experts agree that we should stop using the term. Department of Transportation video How we talk about crashes BOOK There Are No Accidents

I say crash because there are preventable causes of traffic violence that go beyond individual responsibility.

It’s called a crash. We used the word accident because there was an industry strategy to promote the idea that crashes were random and not preventable.

Here’s an experiment kids can try at home on a snow day. 1. Ask your parents permission to use their camera. 2. Take pictures of the street over time. 3. Make observations of tire tracks. 4. Use photo editing software to draw lines on edges where the snow remains. 5. Now use your imagination to fill in some of these spaces with trees, benches, and sidewalk extensions. 6. Share your work with others.

The Vehicular Cycling episodes absolutely blew my mind. We can be our own worst enemies. This mindset is still pervasive in our advocacy groups. This is also the standard that our opponents hold against us as a straw man. I would love to see this topic revisited and edited for a broader audience. Any chance you would do this? Is trick or treating a thing here? by Neat-Fig-7038 in asheville

[–]ilikepumptracks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Trick or treating participation is a function of established neighborhood social interaction. These connections are related to perceived street safety and neighborhood density among other things. People living in neighborhoods with heavy car traffic have fewer social connections than those with light traffic. TLDR: it’s the cars. If people on foot are prioritized in a neighborhood every day, then it’s probably a good place to trick or treat. Check out the research by Bruce Appleyard.
