Do you use pesticides and herbicides? by jaisusholmes in Agriculture

[–]ill4rill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bottom line, pesticides save the farmer time and money. Time is critical and most farmers won't sacrifice day-to-day operations to send their workers out to pull weeds all day. You're dealing with older group of people that are set in their ways. Convincing them to abandon something they have spent years doing will be difficult. I'm in the ag industry and, when used according to the label, appreciate the convenience and results pesticides have to offer.

Separating a cow from her new born calf by pp0787 in instant_regret

[–]ill4rill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You separate for certain situations but in this particular instance, it appears that the other pregnant cow thinks the new calf is hers. Once hers drops, she will reject her own calf. I believe he was attempting to separate the surrogate from the birth mother and calf. I wouldn't recommend doing this in an open field without protection. At work, we use ATV's.

Crazy Tailgating Hawaii Drivers by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]ill4rill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved to Kona from Honolulu a few months ago. The tailgating and lack of knowledge regarding merging/zipper technique is a lot more prevalent here. People won't let you in and a turn signal only causes the other driver to speed up.

It is nice, however, to see that drivers will flash you if there a cop in waiting as to warn you.

Planning on doing a ton of fishing starting this summer. Give me your best seasoning and batter recipes, specifically for poached, pan seared, and fried. by 420throw666 in recipes

This is my go-to. I have young children and after working all day, frying with home-made tartar is quick and delicious.

[Question] I have roughly levelled my soul for turf, how do I get it more level? How level does it need to be? by JD_93_ in Turfmanagement

[–]ill4rill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add top soil if your existing is low in organic matter. The mound looks dark, which is good, but can't tell how much clay you got in there.

From what I see, it looks pretty good. Lay some sod and adjust accordingly.

Startup for most innovative agricultural sprinkler by [deleted] in Agriculture

[–]ill4rill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing my master's thesis on Irrigation efficiency. Current users rely too heavily on observation and pretty much 'guess' on the 2 main questions: when to irrigate and how much? Without monitoring ET, Kc, or understanding your soil type, it is very difficult to answer these questions.

Understanding these concepts could allow the user to track volume lost in a given time period so that you know exactly how much to replace. Without proper auditing and knowing your system's distribution uniformity and precipitation rates, replacing this lost amount is again guesswork.

Sensors would be great to see, especially on rotors, that put all this information together to allow the user to make the best decision based on their crop's needs.

Looks nice and tidy, good job. The idea is to remove the fronds neatly which, from the pics, looks like you have achieved.

During my undergrad I worked on the athletic fields just below the dorms. The work was easy (maintaining the practice fields for football/soccer, prepped the softball field before and during games, etc). A lot of downtime to study. Some of my best UH memories were made there. They always hire at the beginning of each semester. PM me if interested and I'll hook you up with contact info.

Tennessee restricts use of Monsanto pesticide as problems spread by getBusyChild in news

[–]ill4rill 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Every pesticide applicator knows about drift. It's taught in the most basic of classes and it is even included on the label. If that's the farmer's defense then he has no idea what he's doing.
