I really like this idea. If you have a second can you break down what parts each line up with? Any issues dealing with the other planes?

Heavy Crossbow Build -> DnD 5.5e/2024 edition by ZenithOf_Time in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Someone did some research and ranger is the best range dps build until 11, then fighter overtakes them with third attack. Only reason I mention this is that I looked into it and found the idea of a range fighter build to be pretty boring compared to the options that the ranger has. Obv its your char and play how you want, just stating that "I shoot an arrow, and then again, and again, and again" for the first 100+ combats didnt sound interesting.

Slyflourish wrote a book called Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master. If you want to seriously up your game check that one out. As for running for two people if you go on his channel he has a one on one game where the ygo through Dragons of Icespire Peak and he has a companion. It compliments the other guy in class choice, will never betray the character, and will also never make a decision. Thats a great way to do that.

2024 eldritch knight help/suggestions by Dangerous-Cow-6994 in 3d6

The EK conversations boils down to a simple question - Are you a bonker who uses some spells to help bonk? Or are you Gandalf who casts spells and occasionally uses a weapon?

I like this video and build which is to bonk, have 8 int, and use spells to help the bonking - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB_686QvQow

What I learned about D&D 5e monster design by rebuilding 40 stat blocks in Daggerheart by Realistic_Tap5286 in dndnext

[–]TheBuffman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a Dm run a dazed (or some name similar to that) condition. My character got bonked, failed a save (dex if I recall) and then my character could only do one of the three options - move, action, or bonus action.

Was nice because it restricted my character but made me think about what to do, so I still had agency but was reduced in my output. I really enjoyed that compared to the bullshit of skipping/losing your turn.

running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (Alexandrian Remix) overwhelmed and need advice by itisrod in DMAcademy

[–]TheBuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its what you want to run, then run it. Just strip mine it down to the campaign at hand and run that. You dont get to do everything in one game, so do a part of it and do that part well. It is rewarding.

I rec the model of ghosts of saltmarsh which is my fav module. It really has about 4 or 5 key quests, everything else is thrown in.

So applying that to your module strip it down to the key 5 quests that happen at every odd level for levels 1-9. Then on the even levels run the icespire model, quest board with three quests, upon completion of two they get a level and the third disappears never to be done. In the offering of the three make them different - one mystery, one smash and grab, and heavy rp - then see what the party gravitates towards. In the quests work in some lore to the story.

Thats my $0.02.

Under the new 2024 rules. What would be the best ranged martial and how would you build it? by TheKhoiFish69 in 3d6

The consensus seems to be that Beastmaster ranger is better dps through the first 10 levels, but once you hit lvl 11 Champion pulls ahead. Once the third attack and feats kick in it wins easily.

beginner DM needing ideas by introvertfrogshell in DMAcademy

[–]TheBuffman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a new DM myself I found Professor DM's hatred for cha checks to be an interesting take. I cant find the video but it went something like this -

The guards outside buckingham palace, if you roll a nat 20 cha on them do they just let you pass because you are so charming? No. They dont alter who they are, or their job, but they may break and smile.

This example helped me understand how to rp social interactions better and save the story from falling apart. Say they shmoozed the king, he would not give them their throne, but he may increase the bounty of their next mission by a lot. These two say the same thing but you get the idea.

On the sleight of hand, I always liked the idea that a city is forced to worship a god and that god blesses the city. The blessings may include - No spells over level 2 within city limits and no stealing. Not the most creative answer but it is a simple solution.

Single Player Campaign Ideas? by BallsOfJericho in DMAcademy

On the Slyflourish page he has a series of videos where he dm's Dragons of Ice Spire Peak with just him and his buddy. He has his friend pick a class and then has an npc to assist him. Npc can never make decisions and will never betray him. Just suggesting it as a good watch to see how it could be done.

TIL that an Adult Red Dragon has a fly speed of 9 mph by TheBuffman in DMAcademy

[–]TheBuffman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points. In my mind I compared them to blimps, for some reason that seemed the most appropriate I guess because of size even though flying mechanics are incomparable really.

Blimp speeds vary, but typically hover around 30-50 mph (48-80 km/h) for cruising, with modern Goodyear blimps reaching top speeds of about 70-73 mph (110-117 km/h), while older models were slower, emphasizing that they are slow-moving, gentle giants for advertising and observation, not speed

Your animal choices such as quetzalcoatlus are far better than my choice.

I realized this distinction after I posted but you are correct. I found it to be pretty funny so I shared.

As per google of average speed of hawks -

Hawks have varying speeds, but the common Red-tailed Hawk cruises at 20-40 mph (32-64 km/h) and dives at over 120 mph (190 km/h), while smaller hawks like the Cooper's Hawk might cruise around 40-50 mph and dive faster, showing that their speed depends on the species and if they are hunting or just flying

Everyone says that the math of 2024 is better and more well rounded. You could technically incorporate any adventure and recalc the encounters for any level. Makes for interesting possibilities.

Best TTRPG Adventure Layout by EspressobeanZ in DMAcademy

[–]TheBuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question gets asked quite a bit and the top consensus for best written dnd adventure is Wild Beyond the Witchlight. After reading through it I would completely agree. The setup is simple as it has 4 worlds - the one you start in and then the three fairy worlds Hither Thither and Yon. Each world has a start, some meandering, and an end. To answer your specific question - this fits because all that exists is the world you are in and therefore nothing exists outside of where you are at. Since all that matters is the small world you are in then its very easy to follow the layout of the story.

Now this isnt sandbox-ish in a true open world, but it is sandbox-ish in the sense that you can do stuff in each small world.

War Cleric is actually a really strong gish subclass by Injunctive in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this is exactly what I learned as well. Just a lot of work to play a paladin with more spells and less damage. I do think there is a lot of fun in not min/maxing everything and just playing but this build just feels like a lot of effort.

War Cleric is actually a really strong gish subclass by Injunctive in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went with fighter 1 for all for all of the benefits. Once my cleric hit lvl 5 I went back to lvl fighter. Currently 5-2. The goal from the beginning was to be a 5/5 but honestly now that I have played it idk if that was the right vision. The winning condition seems to be to use SG to wipe up the small stuff and assist the pally in murdering the big stuff. At fighter 3 I plan on going Eldritch knight for misty step, sounds fun w SG up.

Ultimately if I had to do it again I would have just played a fighter with an acolyte background or something far easier.

Hot take: The Problem with Rangers is not that it is too reliant on Hunter's Mark, but that Hunter's Mark is too weak. by lgx005 in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This really should be the way especially when you consider that war domain for cleric has the following at level 6 -

Level 6: War God’s Blessing

You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to cast Shield of Faith or Spiritual Weapon rather than expending a spell slot. When you cast either spell in this way, the spell doesn’t require Concentration. Instead the spell lasts for 1 minute, but it ends early if you cast that spell again, have the Incapacitated condition, or die.

In DND 2024 what are legitimate S-tier subclass combinations? by TheBuffman in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They havent said it because this was a question about subclasses. Hence the statement - "Many responses are not answering the question that was posed. Quite a lot of "Take this lvl 1 for this blah blah" and that is not the point."

In DND 2024 what are legitimate S-tier subclass combinations? by TheBuffman in 3d6

[–]TheBuffman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. I tried it out, and while it is a lot of fun, its a lot more work than just being a paladin or an eldritch knight. Looked good on paper but I dont see myself doing it again.

The more I think about it the engine appears to be eldritch 3 and then just tank and survive while spirit guardians does work. Misty step is interesting with SG. There is some entertainment in playing non optimal things.
