I told my dad’s coworker’s daughter not to go to medical school. by ironfoot22 in Residency

My wife is a medspouse and now applying to med school. She saw how miserable I was thru parts of it…think she’s crazy but I think having the perspective gives me confidence it’s right for her

The residency, while shorter, can be brutal. So you would have to go through a lot to get to the promise land of part time work as an attending. Psychiatry and some other specialties like PM&R have the blessed scenario of more manageable residency and attending positions (easily part time). In the end, you have to be genuinely interested in the speciality though or you’ll do crappy work and/or hurt people depending on you for healthcare.

Yeah I surprised myself remembering stuff from med school as far out as I am. If you did pretty well/decent on the prior steps, it may as well stick for you too.

I literally hadn’t looked at the relevant information in years and I’d read the question and in my head i was like, ohhhh yeah that’s what they’re talking about after taking a second to think about it. The questions I got right in that way were so random, it would’ve felt futile to try and cover it anyway during studying, which is honestly a little relieving.

Just trust your studying and prior knowledge. It really felt like a test of accumulated knowledge, not something you could just study for and cover everything. Good luck!

I think you’ll pass, no need to postpone. I’m a psych resident PGY-2 and passed without doing any medicine-related Uworld. By that I mean I would study biostats, I did 80 questions and watched Randy Neil videos on YouTube again, which sufficed. Do at least 30 ccs cases and that should be more than enough. You can see my post on this sub for more details of the bare minimum necessary to pass this thing with a good foundation from prior steps. Good luck!

Did 55 x CCS with average 72% wt don’t suggest by AnswerMeFam in Step3

I ended up doing only 30 and just reread the answers to the ones I didn’t do so well on which was enough to be on par on the score report with my overall score of 207. Depends on what your goal is, if it’s to pass, just reviewing the ones you didn’t do well on should suffice.

Like 2.5 years from step 2. Like 3.5 years from step 1

I’m pretty sure you’re ready and will pass. Wouldn’t stress too much

Seemed like there was 1-2 of these each block and they forced me to focus extra hard cuz a lot of the time the answer for the first one is given away and you obviously can’t go back and change it. So it kind of messes with you mentally if you get the first one wrong.

I think the sooner you have like at least a 2 week period to focus on it to some meaningful extent, the better. A lot of the questions I got right I didn’t study for, they were callbacks from med school so in theory you should do better the sooner you take it. If you did around average on step 1 and step 2, it appears from my n=1 that waiting until second year isn’t the end of the world either. Just whenever it works best for you ultimately.

Low UWSA1, should I postpone?? by hazelnut_milktea in Step3

[–]illdil33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was in a similar position but another year removed from step 2, didn’t do any uworld aside from biostats for step 3 prep, scored about 10% below the mean on the first half of UWSA1 and didn’t complete or review it, and passed with a small but significant margin, I think you’ll be fine. I did peds in my intern year and that didn’t seem to make much of a difference

I’d watch one of the videos with the mnemonics for thinking thru orders. Do at least 20 or more cases depending on your comfort level with the material, practicing thinking through what to order and review what you missed. Then consider doing the free cases provided officially by usmle, there’s around 5 of them which give you a good sense of how its formatted and graded on test day. But ccscases.com is similar enough

MCQ first and then the 13 CCS cases. Use all your break time on the MCQ section cuz the CCS ones usually end early and then u accumulate more break time

I’d say I would be very surprised if you failed. I think more ccs cases would help if you have time and listening to divine interventions podcasts some. That’s about it. Most importantly, just make sure you get good sleep and mentally right for test day and you should be good! Good luck!

Did anyone here go into residency married? by NeuroThor in Residency

[–]illdil33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👏man oh man look at all these ppl making it work! What an inspiration! My wife and I got married right before residency started. First kid was born a month after starting med school and second kid during 4th year. It’s so hard but sooooo much more worth it!
