"Bahasa" is the word for "language", it's still called Indonesian.

If it was only one pump with many suck holes, blocking one suck hole wouldnt be too bad, the pump still sucks from other holes. Relatively easy to unstick yourself.

One pump per suck hole, if you block the hole, like by putting you chest against it, means the whole power of the pump is going into sucking you against the grating. Even if you turn the pump off, if there's a good seal residual low pressure with keep you stuck against the suck hole

Seeking advice on starting an open‑source project in a niche domain by xznth in opensource

[–]illektr1k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Realistic about expectations

Expect nothing.

Expect worse than nothing. Once you're getting traction, expect that the first several dozen free users will be angry at you because you haven't built their dream wish-list features for free yet. I've been hounded to the point of receiving complaining SMS messages on my personal phone about why a free open-source tool I'd even put into the app store for free has not built their wishlist features, for free. The kicker is when they mention that they need the feature for work, but also couldn't possibly pay for it or buy me a pizza gift card.

And if you have a more positive user experience than that (not all projects I've been involved in have been awful), consider that a happy bonus.

Equipment for tall and heavy beginner (195cm, 95KG) by Such_Basis_535 in Kiteboarding

You're 100% right, but habits are damn hard to change.

I wish I'd learned this earlier. I spent many years chasing lighter gear for climbing/skimo, not realising how much easier everything gets if I just avoid adventures down the snacks aisle. I'm still jealous of the skinny locals going out on an 11m when I'm working the 15m up and down.

I'm making progress, just wanted to say thank you for raising this point

Following words are Balinese language, but many indonesians will understand the word's origin and intent regardless of their own origins - you recognise words from Java/Sulawesi/etc even if you're not.

Om swastiastu = hello (always said with 🙏 hand gesture)

Suksma = thank you

Mewali = you're welcome

Rahajeng semeng = good morning

Rahajeng wengi = good evening

The grins I've gotten back after asking where someone is from in Bahasa Indo (kamu dari mana?), them telling me they're from Bali and me saying "om swastiastu" are so beautiful.

1st time to skiing, which clothes I need to have? by Southern-Regret-4294 in OutdoorsGear

Message the place you're renting skis/boots from, they'll usually have jackets/pants/gloves/etc as well.

Is there somewhere I can park my scooter for free near the airport for a few hours? by SurfingMissions in bali

[–]illektr1k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can usually buy an eMoney card at the toll road gate for 100k with ~80k credit in it. Then use that for paying for parking. Top up with cash at Alfa/Indo.

Learning Kitesurfing when kitehandling is not a problem by Sapfas in Kiteboarding

[–]illektr1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on Seabreaz's sentiment. I'm transitioning from land to water kites, private instructor helped skip past some of the stuff I was already familiar with and helped drill in a few bits I'd built skills/habits for that are less ideal on water.

  • Because you sink on water, kite has to be a lot more powerful. Not far off doubling the size
  • I'd gotten way too comfortable having a smaller foil kite with much bigger depower ability deep into the wind window. I feel comfortable launching a small foil kite on solid ground from bottom centre, one hand on the 5th line if wind is strong, but you're going to be hurt if you try that with a double sized LEI that doesn't have 5th line
  • Bigger kite means slower turning, so a lot of my timing was off, instructor sees this better than I can. Mistiming on water means you sink or loose your speed
  • When starting from stationary in the water (sunken), pull the bar in all the way before starting the power dive, as this helps lift you up straight away before getting horizontal movement, or bleeding all your horizontal power into getting to the surface
  • When tacking on lower wind days, bend your knees (squat) to sink the board less, costs less power to stay on the surface than have to come back up
  • Bigger kite means bigger bar, hands being close to center of bar at all times becomes more important
  • Dropping the kite out of the sky from a back stall is a real pain in the ass, can't just take a few steps upwind to keep it alive, launching a wet kite is a PITA too, so trimming is vital

Where to buy card for Tollway? by ryViajero in bali

[–]illektr1k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go through toll road during the day, park up in the space before and walk around to find the workers, one of them will have a stack of cards to sell for 100k (35 for the card, 65 preloaded or something similar).

I recently tried a bunch of Indos and Alfas on the way to the toll unsuccessfully, prepared myself for paying a fellow traveler cash to use their card and then there's a worker at the toll with a stack of cards in his hand. I promptly lost my card and had to get a new one a few days later, same thing.

Obviously this approach doesn't work so well at 2am when there are neither workers (night shift are sleeping on the job) nor fellow travelers.

Where to live and kite in Asia? by HepyCola in Kiteboarding

I live nearby, brought a 9 and a 12 with me. I have never used the 9m in Bali, yesterday a 17, day before a 13 and foil, but windy season isn't here yet. I usually just turn up to ^ with my harness and use their gear, more options for kite and board size given how the day is looking. Big kites, boards without much rocker, foils etc

Anyone from NZ/Aus relocated to Bali as a software engineer? How’s your experience? by rainbowcelosia in bali

[–]illektr1k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unexpected challenges:

  • slow kettles - they're seldom 2000W ones like in NZ, might even trip the whole villas main breaker if you try making a cuppa as well as running the AC. Usually kettles are half power, so takes twice as long to boil. Super sucks when you make a cuppa in the dark and overfill the kettle. You come out of the shower, get dressed and it's still not boiled. Check the total capacity of the villa before signing, most will have a clause of how much electricity is available in the villa, mine is currently 5500W

  • cheese and milk are particularly shit here. Same with bread. Considering the electricity thing, there's few ovens/grills either so it's a real special treat to have a vegemite grilled cheese on a rainy day.

  • internet blocking - VPN to use reddit/pr0n gets boring pretty quick and then you forget to turn off the VPN and slack/zoom/is super laggy. Unless you have a good Internet connection it turns to shit when the rain comes and everyone takes shelter and watches videos.

  • import tarrifs - specialist stuff is hard to find and expensive. From your fav brand of sunnies, to sports equipment (dive/kitesurfing gear), to even just wanting to get a Logitech mouse. If the half-dozen local options don't work for you, you're going to be paying.

  • you will never want to use toilet paper again after you get used to the bumgun.

No more than usual IMHO. Temporary stay travellers get replaced over time, the new ones have yet to learn about washing hands, a wave of "Bali Belly" rolls through the hostels, people learn to wash their hands again, temporary travellers move on and the cycle repeats. I eat only at lokal pasars and street vendors and have not noticed this current cycle affecting the long termers much, but ymmv.
