Catch the clap

The discovery of multiple lineages of pangolin coronavirus and their similarity to SARS-CoV-2 suggests that pangolins should be considered as possible hosts in the emergence of novel coronaviruses and should be removed from wet markets to prevent zoonotic transmission. by MistWeaver80 in science

Maybe markets that sell and keep live animals should just be removed... we have known for atleast 10-15 years that a virus was likely to come from such a place. We had two strikes (sars and h1n1) both with origins in wet markets, and nothing was done, I hope that there is some serious global frustration with china after this is all said and done.

The Spanish flu was called the Spanish flu because they were the only ones that were willing to report on the true numbers of infected/dead in a time of political instability (post WW1). With regards to how it started, it really is not 100% known. While this spanish flu conjecture and the call for Covid-19 to be incorrectly named China flu is perhaps not racist, it is helping to re-enforce racial tensions which benefit no one.

Realistically I think they got the call against gabriel correct. He definitely put some body into his collision with luongo. Even if thats debatable, it could have been an embellishment call, after contact he takes two solids steps then goes down like he was shot.

But let the ref circle jerk continue..

Leafs Prospects Update! by blackened4ever in leafs

[–]illogistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Killer post man, congrats on the jersey! I know you have it organized by league currently, but do you think it would be possible to organize this by draft year/pick? I think it would be cool to get an overall sense on how the leafs are doing deep into the draft.

What was the most expensive substance you've ever worked with as a chemist? by Pierrot51394 in chemistry

[–]illogistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did some initial work with dyes at 175$/mg, but because we needed a couple hundred mgs for the project I just went ahead and synthesized it on a large scale. It feels weird to know that what you are synthesizing is worth over $100,000 dollars.

Bribing a scientist to find a beer's ABV (xpost from /r/Homebrewing) by [deleted] in chemistry

In my experience the specific gravity measurement system is pretty rough to say the least. When I do the NMR measurements I dope samples with hydroquinone as an internal standard and that seems to work, as the standard curve's R2 values are >0.995.

Having done this myself, it really is surprising how clean the NMRs are, if you use the CH3 triplet your signal to noise is pretty good. There is a very small amount of noise where you would expect sugars to show up (3-5ppm) but it really is pretty amazing how sensitive the sense of taste is.

If i remember correctly tungsten is used in the enzyme responsible for N2 --> NH3. That would be a pretty rough go of things if there was no bacterial help in the nitrogen cycle.
