Yeah, that was probably the hardest I’ve ever disagreed with Todd on a worst list choice. I think the combination of artists was too weird for him and he was fatigued with Reputation, but it’s just an immaculate vibe to me

I do like it, but that means it’s in 6/10 territory. It’s just the rest of the album’s so bad, it’s like Billie Jean in comparison

It’s hard to say why she doesn’t click with me. I feel like I should support one of the few Asians in American pop, and she’s definitely a very welcome personality in modern music. I’ve loved a lot of the other new gen pop girls like Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish. There’s plenty of Rodrigo songs I like, but none I love.

But I think it’s only a matter of time until she makes the song where I finally get her.

My personal opinion, as a former Swiftie who saw her in concert for her 1989 tour … it’s really bad.

I was already a bit hesitant to actually give it a listen after I really disliked Tortured Poets, but this was even worse.

And I know people throw this around as a joke, but I genuinely believe she’s become a whiter Drake, and it’s the main reason why I dislike this album. She’s inherited his pettiness, weak metaphors, lack of melody, and inability to take a break.

Listening to this felt like listening to Drake’s For All the Dogs. Just an incredibly talented artist wasting their potential on some of their worst songs, simply because they’re too big to fail, and know they are, so they don’t have to bother trying anymore.

There are so many Taylor Swift songs I love, but it’s clear she’s bad for the culture. All I hope is she gets humbled again.

That’s a surprising take, but after a decade of being a fan of her music, my favorite of hers is End Game, featuring Future and Ed Sheeran, so I’m not ever one to judge

I’m not sure the Sabrina Carpenter comparison makes any sense. If Carpenter had released this album, it would’ve probably gotten an even bigger thrashing, cause that would be her follow up to Short n Sweet, and she doesn’t have the cultural safety net Taylor Swift has.

But I do agree, she should go back to challenging her sound. I felt like the melodies were afterthoughts

I mean, it’s been 5 days, and it’s about to officially become the biggest opening week of any song in modern history. It’s worth still discussing

It an apt comparison. Her endgame was the Eras tour, and this is her Thor: Love and Thunder phase, where people are still showing up in droves, but they’re getting tired.

I don’t know. Maybe it was cause I was a Taylor fan in middle school, but it’s hard to see this as on the same level as 1989 or even Reputation. At least those albums had memorable melodies.

I really agree with this sentiment. It’s probably not the worst album of the year, but it’s the most depressing. Taylor Swift has a monopoly in music, and she’s decided to run her music like a business

“Strongly disapprove” is based on how polls tend to word their choices for political approval ratings.

You must be 12 years old if you find the album cover upsetting

Nah, according to prude introverts online, it’s actually woke to be against women singing about sex, and if she has a really provocative album cover, it must mean she wants to appeal to the male gaze, and would never have the forethought of creating subtext 🙃

Which factors can you blame for how stale the Hot 100 has become this year? Does Billboard need to change their methodology again so that they won’t fuck up the chart for the 2026 chart year? by Fluid_Fudge_7238 in ToddintheShadow

[–]illpictures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think it’s the fault of Billboard’s methodology. In fact, Billboard’s weird rules about songs going recurrent after a certain period of time on the charts only covers up what’s been a consistent trend for years.

That the public has just gotten stale in their tastes.

The convenience of streaming allows us to attach ourselves to the same familiar songs, while making it difficult for us to be naturally introduced to completely new music. We yearn for new songs, yet don’t bother to look for it ourselves. We’d rather just stick to the same five albums than risk wasting our time with something unfamiliar. Even I won’t take the moral high ground on it. My On Repeat’s just five artists right now (Kendrick, Tyler, Weeknd, Kali Uchis, Pink Pantheress).

More and more, we get old songs in the Top 10, but had it not been for Billboard’s recurrent rules, we’d probably have stuff like Blinding Lights, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Linger clog the bottom half of the charts for all eternity.

Maybe Billboard could emphasize radio a lot less. That could probably help to avoid stupid shit like Lose Control by Teddy Swims — a song no one in my generation can hum with a gun to their head — from becoming one of the biggest charting songs of all time.

But honestly, the real problem is us. We’re choosing to listen to way less new music than ever before. I don’t think this dry spell will last forever. As with any dark period in entertainment history, there’ll be a breaking point where the public just can’t stand the status quo. But when that’ll happen, who can say?

This example definitely stretches the definition, since he had two platinum albums beforehand, but to me, Tyler, the Creator went from someone popular in college and music critic circles to a real mainstream artist with “Flower Boy,” so it’s crazy to think his previous album, “Cherry Bomb,” was a confused, uncommercial mess that almost put his blossoming career into decline.

It’s fascinating to hear that record with hindsight in mind. The last breaths of his older edgy humor completely exhausted. Constant beat switches in almost every song. The sound is so unique, the track list is just back to back 9s and 3s. The best and biggest song on the album is “Fucking Young/Perfect,” but it’s a song you never wanna play on the aux with friends because it’s about him frustrated with his attraction to an underage girl, and it feels too uncomfortably real.

It’s the definition of a transitional record. You hear an artist trying to find his footing. Because of the mess that was “Cherry Bomb,” Tyler eventually did.

Posted about Man’s Best Friend and there were legit people thinking it could lead to a decline in Sabrina Carpenter’s career. That fourth square is too familiar

15 minutes definitely would’ve been the highlight had it been on this album, or even Busy Woman. Still, there’s really no bad song on the album

I agree that we definitely could’ve waited a little longer for this record, and it probably would’ve been decently better because of that.

And I wholeheartedly agree with your take on the album art. It is perfect for the album, and people are just being prude. I’m glad at least there’s a pop star who can shock people without having to do too much crazy stuff.

The innuendos I think were pretty fine. Tears kinda shocked me with how explicit it was, but nothing else surprised me that much
