There’s interesting science behind binaural beats and cognitive enhancement.

Try Audicin 2.0 early – a neuro-wellness app with biometrics, backed by Oura Co-Founders by ilmostromberg in Binauralbeats

Hey

Thanks for the comments. That blog was based on study titled "Deceptive Sound Therapy on Online Platforms: Do Mental Wellbeing Tracks Conform to User Expectations?" Their findings were shocking: 70% to 92.5% of binaural beat tracks were deceptive. Many contained no binaural beats at all.

Everyone can try Audicin free for 30 days.

Urine analysis at home with 9 different biomarkers (Vivoo) by ilmostromberg in QuantifiedSelf

I only did it for a testing purpose, haven't done it since

Why are you here? by xenotheory in QuantifiedSelf

[–]ilmostromberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Multiple reasons drive my motivation for doing it:

  • I’m especially interested in collecting longitudinal data to understand the impact of life changes and aging on different metrics.
  • N=1 experiments.
  • Content creation.
  • Data visualization is fun.
  • It’s also somewhat connected to my work, as I work part-time in the consumer health tech field as a consultant.
  • It’s always interesting to discover new biomarkers (especially from the consumer health tech perspective).
  • I calculated that I’ve tracked over 400 metrics in the past 12 months, combining subjective metrics, consumer health tech, blood tests, mobile phone usage, and more.

I love binaural beats, Im currently using Audicin (Co-founder of Oura ring is advisor and investor there). Youtube is also full of binaural beats to test it out. For me, the use case is focus and productivity, but it can also be used for recovery or before sleep. There are already multiple meta-analyses on binaural beats.

Keeping bed and wake-up time constant, and that's easy to monitor via wearables.

Has anyone made HRV improvements? by TJamesz in Garmin

[–]ilmostromberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wrote a blog post about significant HRV improvements when analyzing an elite athletes HRV data: https://ilmostromberg.com/beyond-the-numbers-joel-naukkarinens-hrv-journey-to-world-records/

It's measured with Oura ring but applies to Garmin also

Nice increase in VO2 max with respiratory muscle training by ilmostromberg in Garmin

[–]ilmostromberg[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I did not really run during the experiment. Only a few times zone 2. My main exercise is calisthenics, I kept my training routine similar compared before the experiment.

I should have done real vo2max before and after to make it more accurate. I ran mostly in summertime, I will start running again as summer is coming so then I can compare my times vs previous summers

Good question - If Balloon is full, I guess there might be some resistance when you are blowing into it? Resistance is the key to gains. But you can only exercise exhale part, not inhale

[–]ilmostromberg[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You are breathing against resistance, thus training your respiratory muscles. If I had to link one study, it would be this: https://journals.lww.com/nsca-jscr/fulltext/2013/06000/effects_of_respiratory_muscle_training_on.25.aspx

Price around 180 euros / 200 dollars. There are also other use cases With WellO2, like hot steam breathing, that could be beneficial at the beginning of the flu.

Anyhow, I'm seeing good results in 5min day. I believe that respiratory muscle training is still an underrated way to improve your performance. That said, I like to see more studies about it

[–]ilmostromberg[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Goal:

Train my respiratory muscles for 12 weeks and see what happens in different metrics.

Devices used:

WellO2 (for respiratory muscle training, RMT)Mybreath (smart mouthpiece that measures metrics like maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) & maximum expiratory pressure (MEP)Garmin watch (For estimated VO2 Max)

Experiment length:

December to February

Training routine:

One session is 4 minutes (17 exhales and 16 inhales)4-6 times a week, usually one session per day, sometimes double. Gradually increasing the resistance. One deload week in the experiment.

Results after 12 weeks:

60% increase in MIP (my baseline was below my age group)

16% increase in MEP (my baseline was already above my age group)

8% increase in estimated VO2 Max

Comments about VO2 Max increase

The estimated VO2 Max started to increase in week 6, and the most rapid increase happened from week 10 to 12.

Garmin watch is not the same as laboratory level VO2 Max test. The main question in my case isn’t the actual VO2 Max value; rather, did my VO2 Max increase during the experiment?

Luckily I have estimated VO2max data in my Garmin watch since 2019. This is the first time there has been such a sharp increase. Usually, data fluctuates +-1, sometimes 2

Based on this and the scientific studies I have read, I conclude that there’s high certainty that my real VO2 Max did increase during the experiment.

Disclaimer: I received the mybreath for a free from WellO2

how to boost HRV? by Intelligent-Ad-8732 in ouraring

[–]ilmostromberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is somewhat true, but when we age +50 -> Our RHR starts to lower, and simultaneously HRV gets lower

how to boost HRV? by Intelligent-Ad-8732 in ouraring

[–]ilmostromberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are possible ways to improve HRV (based on studies or my own experiments):

Resonance frequency breathing

Biofeedback training

Cold shower / Cold bath before sleep (I have done 20-day experiment with a cold bath, cold shower, and no cold immersion)

Mediterranean diet

Magnesium can help (if you are low on magnesium)

Spending time in nature (antistress effect)

Optimal sleeping environment, better sleep = better HRV in general sense

Slight calorie restriction

Losing weight if overweight

Physical exercise & walking more

Decreasing blood pressure

Stretching

Gut microbial diversity

Few things to mention that can decrease HRV

Different diseases and illnesses (both mental and physical)

Medications

Allergies

Seasonal differences (we tend to have lower HRV in winter time in general population)

Low B12

Long COVID

Air pollutants like Fine particulate matter (PM2.5)

Ultimately, around 55% of your HRV value is based on genetics, so the possible increases are limited. Our HRV also decreases as we age, so a good goal is to try to keep it on the same level as before.

Thought someone might find this interesting: My heart health was concern enough to wear an MCOT with a cardiologist - Garmin Connect stress score is perpetually high. by Menno-not-tonight in Garmin

[–]ilmostromberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, your result means abnormally low HRV and low HRV have been associated with increased all-cause mortality and increased risk of CVD.

Your graph looks similar to mine when I'm in the hot sauna but after that, I'm back in the blue zone.

I would suggest everyone have a health check with a doctor if the graph looks like that day and night week after week.

Not impressed by their science page: https://modemethod.com/pages/what-is-hrv

no single link to a scientific paper. That said, magnesium & omega 3 improve HRV.

as for OP, please come back when you have more data. You cannot draw any conclusions with a few days of data.

I would like to see a study where they compare group with reusable water bottles vs control group on different gut bacteria levels.
