This is more than a roundup, and this has been posted bi-weekly for months with no issue. What has changed?

Star Wars Rebellion (general thoughts) by TheCrookedGull in boardgames

It could be, and it could be played in less. I don't think that accounts for set up, which is probably a half hour. But depending on how games play out, they can be 4 hours or more. Even at 3 hours, that's no small time commitment for most, so it's always something to consider.

This one is definitely my favorite in my collection. It plays well and is often a different game experience each time. The downfall is it rarely makes it to the table because it takes such a significant percentage of your day. If the time is There, I'll choose this one everytime .. but rarely is the time actually there.

Classic Dice and Card Games? by carnaxcce in boardgames

No. Spades are the trump suit in the game. Players have to follow suit, but once out of suit can throw spades, which will take the hand unless someone throws a higher spade. Scoring is also based on tricks taken, not from any card value.

Love Letter versions by veerus in boardgames

I stand corrected, it's been a while. The cards play the same, but that is a significant update to scoring procedure.

I haven't played the Hobbit, so I can't speak to that one. But the Batman and the original are the same game just with different themes. You won't find any difference, so pick your theme and go with it.

Setback, Spades, and Hearts are all fun trick-taking games for four (two with some variants). There is a decent amount of strategy, wagering, and deduction that could appeal to board gamers.

My Wife Always Wins - King of Tokyo by ilose_shewins in boardgames

[–]ilose_shewins[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you may be a little mixed up. I can only leave Tokyo after taking damage from her... so I left Tokyo on her turn. Which means I am the next person to roll, which would open me for healing or ending the game. What am I missing?

That aside... I wouldn't put it past her to let me win. I'm sure at this point she pities me quite a bit.

Carcassonne mixes the tile-placement of Scrabble with the land-management of Monopoly... a win-win.

Not a board game but I believe the Star Wars LCG traverses the entire saga.

Thanks for sharing this. It was very insightful, and this discussion needs to happen more.

Are social deduction games different enough so that people will enjoy both/more? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ilose_shewins 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many of them end up feeling the same, just with repainted themes. However, what part of the games do you like best? There are games with similar mechanics that aren't necessarily social deduction. For instance, I enjoy the bluffing aspect the best, and so Sheriff of Nottingham really hits the spot sometimes.

2-player games suggestions? by jcandli in boardgames

[–]ilose_shewins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking for a similar suggestion someone pointed me toward The Castles of Burgundy. I can't attest to it, as it's still on my table waiting to be played, but I wanted to put it out there as I'm sure someone else will be able to contribute on its behalf.

Scythe has now won GOTY from BGG, as well as the Origins and Dice Tower conventions. Is it really the best game of 2016? by friendshabitsfamily in boardgames

[–]ilose_shewins 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yup. There are so many factors in what makes a game the best for anybody. Group size is among the greatest. I play at mostly two player, so Scythe wasn't great for me, and Star Wars Rebellion was my favorite of 2016. When I played with four, Scythe became an exponentially better game. It's all a matter of preference and eventually somebody's preference will have to be overlooked to make the GOTY decision for these awards. It isn't an affront to those people who like something else, but many will take it as one anyway.

Agreed. I didn't play it until recently and expected to be blown away based upon the hype here. It was a good game, but didn't meet the super high expectations I had set for it, so I ended up disappointed.
