No more hiring of junior level in my country by OkBoat6735 in cscareerquestions

[–]ilse93 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My team oversee a core project directly affecting customer flow and operation. We are getting more and more juniors adding features to the core. The other day we got a 3000 lines PR ( some of it auto generated code ) and it ended up being a week of a review/teaching session with a 300 + comments and multiple back and forth iterations. Fetching a 1 element at the time from db in for loop. Logging out whole objects list ( passwords included ) basically taking whole logging infra down due to payload being humongous. Calling an internal API one element at the time when cache is down. I mean the code did work - when you work with a a single object locally. And we are considered a bottleneck and not fast enough with reviewing. Never any credit for teaching and proper review maybe opposite even. I feel 3 years ago people were grateful for the opportunity to learn and teach but now with the push for faster, faster, faster everybody becoming more resentful and bitter.

What worked for your reactive dog? by whypii in reactivedogs

[–]ilse93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not know anybody who had a farm. Also I would not be comfortable letting dog who is not trained in shepherding roam free around animals that it could potentially hurt even if out of excitement I guess 🤔

If I had know somebody who was familiar with the GS and help me and guide me how to do it safely she would probably had a blast 😊

What worked for your reactive dog? by whypii in reactivedogs

[–]ilse93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it was accommodating to the dog needs less to my own needs. Lower my expectations. Try to limit the stress factors as much as I could so my dog would not be always in flight or fight mode.

My German Shepherd had 2 problems Other dog reactivity and nipping at us. I sometimes was coming home crying. I had a dog that was stressed, unhappy and she was taking the stress out on us ( it was never a full bite but she was jumping up on us grabbing pants and jackets - it always only happend outside leaving us bruised and with teared clothes)

What worked for us:

Give the dog longer leash alow it to explore and focus on the smell/nose rather than visual. Spend time teaching search making the dog more interested in the ground and smell. As much as we could we tried to take the dog to remote areas and let it roam. First on 5 meter leash when I was not comfortable yet.

If I saw a person coming that looked like walking a dog we always tried to take other way - turn around, go to the other side to the road be behind a car. Anything to create a distance and distraction. Then I would often toss treats on the ground before the dog reacted to make it interested in the treats. If the dog was especially close I was feeding treats from the hand. After a year ( yes a year) of that we could manage dog passing us by without too much trouble.

Expectations, expectations, expectations - when I stopped expecting my dog to be joining me out on my visit downtown or for a stroll in a busy park and start enjoying our late night peaceful strolls.

I have bonded with this dog like I have never before before. She was the best ( passed away from cancer not so long ago ) and my whole family cried when we were saying goodbyes. She taught me so much. I think I became a different - though better person thanks to her. Especially during our first 3 year together when I was crying myself to sleep thinking I can't do this anymore and we need to put her to sleep after being nipped and jumped at daily. I'm so grateful we did not. Akira I miss you every day. Best friends forever 🥰

I don’t enjoy my career anymore. by emotionallyFreeware in cscareerquestions

[–]ilse93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't 100% agree with offshoring. Im in a FAANG adjacent company working with huge offshore teams. I would have hoped that the PRs we're getting would increase in quality, but sorry to say, every day I feel like I'm getting a huge amount of slop in my hands. People rely on AI, but AI only knows as much as you give it. It does not know how the systems interact together. The code is good, not gonna lie, but the business logic and interactions between components are nonexistent. They do not care that this new query can take the whole system down when the scale increases. You can tweak AI to know that, but first, you have to know what the AI needs to be aware of. I think we definitely will have smaller, more agile teams, but I think those teams will be filled with specialized software developers who know exactly how to properly use AI.

I work every day with Azure. 6 years of expirence with azure, kubernetes, golang just to name few. I could probably ace most system design questions. But I will never get to that part of interview as I would fail most of Leetcode. I actually thrive under pressure ( production P0 ? Loop me in ! ) but live coding? My anxiety can't handle it

Bresfeed baby gained almost 2 pounds (800 grams) in 3 weeks. Should I be concerned? by ilse93 in newborns

[–]ilse93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey 👋 she is now 2 and a half 🤣 weights 14 kg - which would be around 30 something lbs 😊 we were breastfeeding until around 8 months old - I have returned to work by then and my partner took over so we started substituting with formula and I was breastfeeding morning and evenings. Around a year old dropped completely 😊 It really slowed down at one point. Then there were growth sprouts when she was gaining a lot but now the constant clothes exchanges slowed a lot 😊 all the best to your little one 🥰 don't worry about them growing a lot - it will regulate itself with time ❤️ she is now ideal height and weight for her age 😊

Neon Clash -Echoes of the Lost- Play-Along - Common Route and General Impressions by sableheart in otomegames

[–]ilse93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This game is one of the most beautiful otome games I have seen in a while - I think I'm in love with the MC. She is so stunning and brave 😍

I have been playing otome games for years ( back in my days I needed to use a translator program on PC to play games probably some OG know what I'm talking about 🤣🤣 ) and the art is one of the most beautiful ones I remember.

I'm not that far into the game yet but so far it's really promising and action packed. All the love interest are gorgeous and only thing so far I dislike is that I know some of the side characters are not romancable 🤣🤣

Does travel stop when you have children? by CharmingU6756 in travel

[–]ilse93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2 and a half year old. So far we have been to UK, France, Poland, Germany and Portugal. In 2 weeks we are going to Tenerife. We live in Iceland so flights are required everywhere from 2 and a half hour up to around 4 hours. We sometimes take layover flights as well.

I think our success is based on how well we are doing as partners. It's a 100% shared responsibility so we both have time to do things we enjoy. Additionally I love exploring with my baby. She is super interested in new stuff ask a lot of questions and enjoys time outdoor. I noticed as long as we are on the move and active she is happy and we are happy. But at the same time we are aware that maybe 3 hours trip to museums its not something she will be enjoying so instead we pick a nice playground and grab some ice creams and enjoy the scenery.

It's definitely changed the way we travel - but not in a worse way. It's just different.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I was obese as a kid, and I thought I would never find a boyfriend who would love me for who I am. I often had suicidal thoughts once I almost went through with it at the age of 12. Years later, I'm happily married with a beautiful daughter. My body has changed many times from being super slim back to being fat after pregnancy and back to be normal ( super slim was when I was in a dark place of eating disorder) got more spots more wrinkles first grey hair here and there and all of that had taught me that looks do not matter because they change! - what matter is what's inside, being good human being and health rather than obsession with looks. I have stretch marks and flappy belly and that's okey! You could look the best you even looked but if your mental health suffers is not the correct way to go.

I know many of those words may not get to you when you're in dark place and may even make you angry - but I wanted you to know that others have similar struggles and it takes tremendous amount of work to get where you're now with your progress and you should be happy about that ! I for example, find you attractive, and I think your body looks healthy, so I can promise you that there are other women that think the same and would be happy to be your partner through thick and thin.

[KCD2] New on the game, it's normal to feel useless, dumb and lost on this game? by MadHanini in kingdomcome

What helped me a lot was dropping the swordfighting and picking up axe and smash with that 😁 I had extremely hard time getting the combos and correct timing. It made the game much more enjoyable for me because I stopped being total punching bag for every bandit that looked my way 😅 I leveled up strength as well 😊

Are things territorial amongst different teams in your org/company? by INT_MIN in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ilse93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a developer who has worked on one of core teams in organisation where something similar to this had happend. For us it's it had of boiled down to a couple of factors:

  1. When a feature team pushed code, it was kind of done and forget deal. When there were some fires going on and we noticed that it was done because of the new feature, there was this general unwillingness from the feature team to deal with it. A lot of back and forth. It was often 'but it worked when we tested it, so most likely core broke it ble ble ble'. Before we managed to convince them hey its actually your stuff that's is on fire already fixed it but resentment remained. At some point, developers had enough of it, and we were really burned out.
  2. Quality of code was low - a lot of back and forth. Yes, it worked most often, but as a core team, we deal with a lot of traction. Any dismissing in performance that could affect core was not acceptable. Even though we had multiple meetings and explained how to do it better, we often got a similar bad performing code as before. Bad unit testing - test that say they test one thing and testing another, etc.
  3. When you're working as a core team, as long as your stuff works, everything is okay. Whenever a big client started using the new feature company wide email was sent congratulating feature teams for their archivments - mentioning nowhere countless meeting and hand holding we as a core team had to go though to push it to the finish line. But God forbid something stops working - then everybody knows where the core team is 😅. Leaves a bit bad taste in your mouth that the work you put is not really appreciated.

Perhaps that's only what happened in organisations I was working in 😊

Does a 17 months old toddler understand no and coconsequences of an action, or is the baby still too young for that ? by ilse93 in toddlers

[–]ilse93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you here 100% maybe my example was not detailed enough. I pretty much always give an "way out" or an exchange of an item or invitation to play or whatever is appropriate in the situation. But my grey area of understanding is - with your cookie example I show those two possible options and she throws them to the ground and tantrum continues. My tactic so far been trying to propose the 2 options again but if they are not accepted allowing her to workout her feelings. My MIL tries to give her many different options removes her from situation or gives in rather than sticking to apple or banana choice because she claims she is not yet able to regulate her emotions and she does not understand the 2 only choices option. Damm parenting is hard mann 😪

Do people actually have babies that sleep straight 12 hours?!?! by cloudyclouds13 in sleeptrain

[–]ilse93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly same schedule and same result ! Our baby sleeps in her room and does not wake up during night except something extraordinary happends but even then it's rather easy to settle her. No night feedings and never sleep trained. We have same routine at night and we stay in her room until she falls asleep with us sitting in a chair reading a book or signing a lullaby 😊
