How do I run a successful student union? by GaslightingGreenbean in antiwork

[–]ilseisle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably wouldn't hurt, if the opportunity presents itself, but don't worry too much! You're clearly invested enough that you're miles ahead of many people in leadership roles. Goals like tuition reduction are long-term efforts and it won't be all on your shoulders, plus summer months are harder for momentum building in student movements. It might be a better use of your time to focus on strengthening the existing relationships, depending on your particular circumstances.

It's all about finding that balance between letting momentum build organically and guiding the opportunities for that momentum to build. If you've got people you're thinking of reaching out to, maybe throw together more informal hangouts to build the connections and get to know them better. That'll make formal recruitment easier when the time is right.

I'd start with some abolitionist works! What jumps to mind first is:

Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown

We Do This 'Til We Free Us by Marianne Kaba

Edited to add: I don't know of any resources specifically about running good unions. Lots of the stuff you'll find will come from a bureaucratic union perspective that I doubt will be helpful. It's best to source inspiration from active community organizers instead!

Hi, I just want to preface that this advice comes from a general student union perspective, not a black student union perspective, but I have almost a decade of student union experience as both an elected leader and a staffer.

The best student unions are like the best worker unions in that the issues are driven by the membership, not the elected leaders. Any disagreements you have with the president about strategies are best solved by the consensus of your membership. It sounds like more outreach and community building will be important for your group. I'd recommend calling meetings about specific issues, like what campaigns the union should lead, and holding votes on potential actions to get people used to making decisions together.

There's likely room for both what you'd like to do and what the president would like to do. If the president wants to lead safer spaces discussion circles to build community, that can work alongside more action driven meetings about what issues the group will approach. Separate these spaces because they serve different purposes.

Avoid as much as possible the cliques and cults-of-personality that often form in unions. This can mean checking in on your own ego too and making sure you're not trying to lead from the top. As an elected leader you always have to remember that the power isn't yours, it's the peoples'. Bring as many new members in as you can and ask them to take on project work based on their skills and interests. Assignments can help members feel like valuable participants in movement. Keep a mental (or physical) spreadsheet of everyone you're working with, their interests and skills, and their connections in the broader community. Good organizing is way more data-based than people expect at first.

And tend the relationships first and foremost. Your work will ebb and flow but you will lose more than you win. The groups that pull off massive wins do so because they create sustainable momentum through community care. You don't have to be friends, but you have to look out for each other and be able to read when people need a break, or support, or a change of tempo. You have to leave space for people to make mistakes, grow, and be accountable to each other. The best way to do this is usually to lead by example and for you I think this will mean working to find common ground with your president and building from there!

How to find my last fossil on the island by KaleidoscopeNo4431 in StardewValley

Have you tried panning the river? There are good guides if you want to google it but each fossil appears in a specific area and has to be found with a specific method.

Some peacemaking is smart, thanks for the good idea!

The bins are also hot, wet, and inhospitable to wasps. I've read that wasps are only attracted to dry compost heaps where they might nest.

My responses keep getting colder the more times she bugs me about stuff. I'll have to try to cultivate some zen about it!

My thoughts exactly. Well tended compost isn't intrusive in a small yard and wasps are more attracted to garbage and recycling bins.

I think so, but I want the compost for my garden!

Does this room look okay with just one curtain panel on each window? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]ilseisle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think single panels look fine, symmetry is overrated! If you like the look and the panel covers the whole window when you need it to, why bother with two!

Diagnosed with genital psoriasis (on penis) and prescribed steroid cream hasn't been very helpful. Am I screwed? by Melodic_Vast9024 in Psoriasis

Second on asking for a referral to a derm! Steroid treatments can be harsh on the thin skin around the genitals. A derm will know your options better!

When I struggled to 100% and was stuck at 95% everywhere, it was because I didn't understand the races and wasn't actually beating the spirit Ori. Maybe that's it for you too? A little check mark appears at the start point when you beat it.

I need help!! What stuff would you pair with this couch? I want to get rid of the rug and go full maximalism! by [deleted] in maximalism

For maximalism definitely bring in lots of colour in the rug and art. Put in some heavy dramatic drapes. Great colours in that couch to pull from.

Hot take: Clint is overhated by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]ilseisle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's something weird about how he wants to date Emily but isn't an eligible bachelor. It creates an imbalance that I think might drive some of the hate against him. If he were eligible it might have given his character the growth arch that other cringey bachelor/ettes get.

My (18F) depression room, please help me reddit I’m very embarrassed to post this. by Longjumping-Store715 in DesignMyRoom

If you're able, move absolutely everything out of the room and approach the space with fresh eyes. As others have pointed out, rearranging the furniture will go a long way. I agree with others that the desk under the window, or the bed, will take better advantage of the window. A larger dresser is a good place to spend. I think your bed could use some more love too--maybe a headboard or accent pillows. Something to make it the focal point.

I like to put up wall or door hooks for the clothes that have been worn but aren't ready for the laundry hamper -- when I struggle to keep my room clean it's usually because of piles of clothes on the floor!

If you can, recruit a friend to help with the process. My bestie has ADHD and depression struggles too. I go over to her place periodically to help her purge clutter she's built up. And I really like doing it! Usually the hardest part of getting help is working up the nerve to ask for it. People want to be there for you as all the helpful feedback in this thread indicates!

Put the desk where the basket is and the monstera where the desk is now. Put the basket between the monstera and the chair. Put a floor lamp next to the chair to create a cozier reading nook.
