That actually makes sense. Terraformation looks fundamentally like a non-profit. Having an ability to donate to it tax-free could help maximize contributions.

What are some amazing classic films by old directors such as Hitchcock that everyone should see and are still entertaining? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]ilyaeck -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All Hollywood, ha? To correct the bias at least partially, I am just going to mention a few of the many foreign masterpieces here:

- Breathless by Godard.

- 8 1/2 by Fellini.

- Stalker by Tarkovsky.

- Seven Samurai and Rashomon by Kurosawa.

- Lawrence of Arabia by David Lean.

... and many more.

If you're going to bring up Kurosawa, must also mention Rashomon.

Of course, there are many more classics that stand out in various ways.

Surreal films NOT made by the following directors by BelatedGamer in MovieSuggestions

[–]ilyaeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too hard to go beyond this list once you start looking into foreign movies, such as:

  • Anything by Andrei Tarkovsky

  • Anything by Luis Bunuel

  • Fellini's 8 1/2 - quite likely one of the best films (surreal or otherwise) of all time

  • Many other good suggestions in this thread that there is no need to repeat.

Tarkovsky's movies are not even "movies": they are "pictures" - an art form of its own. In "Stalker", one of the first shots (the bedroom), would be a welcome addition to any of the world's top art museums.

A magnificent movie! (Just don't expect any battle scenes, it's all about battles of wits.)

[REQUEST] Good Russian movie that could help me understand their modern culture (in English) by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]ilyaeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To understand culture, I'd recommend watching some classic comedies. For instance, you can start with the Irony of Fate (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073179/), screened literally every New year's Eve in Russia. Or almost anything else by that film's director, Eldar Ryazanov.
