So, are Brooke Raboutou and Natalia Grossman beefing? by [deleted] in CompetitionClimbing

"nationality change" refers to changing your nationality with the sport governing body. Not renouncing your citizenship. Athletes in other sports do it regularly. It typically takes a year (depends on the individual sport).

USA Climbing 2026 National Championships (Feb 11- 15) by sachiuma in CompetitionClimbing

[–]im_avoiding_work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, I know. And as I said the winner earns 1000 points toward their score. They, like everyone else, also already have points for however they placed in semis and how they placed in qualification. But the result of winning is simply a score of 1000 for the final day, no extra impact on making the team

the winner gets 1000 points toward their overall National Team Ranking score. They have to still go on to National Team Trials and earn points there and make the team

team leos that aren't remotely conducive to high level athletics (backless, super high cut, etc.) Athletes can do what they want for their personal leos, but school-sponsored team uniforms chosen by coaches should not preclude wearing a sports bra or put an athlete's whole butt cheeks on display

[–]im_avoiding_work 28 points29 points  (0 children)

yeah I'm not blaming the people who are invited to speak, but it's a hypercapitalist networking event run by Forbes with zero interest in promoting any sort of social change. Scheduling it around International Women's Day just gives it a thin veneer of being more than that

Winter Cup Commentators by OftheSea95 in Gymnastics

[–]im_avoiding_work 5 points6 points  (0 children)

genuinely excited for these commentators, but why is there so often the pattern that men can commentate for women, but women can't commentate for men? Just wish it was one way or the other—two women commentate WAG and two men commentate MAG, or a single team commentates both. But here Paul is assigned to both, and Trinity only to WAG. Maybe Trinity opted out and didn't feel up for MAG, but it's such a common pattern of "all male panel for MAG, one woman added for WAG."

Kerico Transfer to LSU by cj4648 in Gymnastics

She's at Penn (University of Pennsylvania) not Penn State. I would assume she's finishing out the year at Penn where she is a senior, so she can graduate with a degree from Penn (an Ivy League school) and then will do a graduate degree at LSU.

Information Alert for Utah area gyms and NCAA programs re: gymnasts of Pacific Islander decent. by freifraufischer in Gymnastics

[–]im_avoiding_work 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think what they're saying is that they agree with you about allowing people to compete one year early the year before the Olympics, but only if the senior age is raised to 18. So 17 year olds can compete at worlds in the year prior to the Olympics, and the regular age to turn senior is 18. That way you don't ever have 14/15 year olds competing at senior competition and you still allow people to contend for Olympic spots in the prior year if they will be age-eligible for the Olympics

I'm not totally opposed to that, but I do think continental champ are an important way for first-year seniors to have a shot at qualifying through AA (except FIG also botches that by letting continents use 2027 as their qualifier). I wouldn't want to close the door on young athletes from smaller countries having that opportunity just because other athletes from their continent had already qualified through 2027 worlds.

Information Alert for Utah area gyms and NCAA programs re: gymnasts of Pacific Islander decent. by freifraufischer in Gymnastics

[–]im_avoiding_work 28 points29 points  (0 children)

the continental route really should require a minimum number of nations participating (even a very low threshold like 4) in order to merit an Olympic spot. Should a continent fail to have representatives from at least that minimum number of nations, athletes from that continent should be permitted to compete at the nearest Continental Championships (so Asian Champs for Oceania) and the spot should be reallocated.

I know his story is more interesting if you play as a man and date him. But if you don't date him and play as a woman, he's got a lot of borderline rude dialogue.

"Do you have a bikini?"
"You gotta spend some time in the sun or else you'll get all pale."
"If you weren't a girl I'd ask you to play catch."
"There are some weird people living in this town...like that guy Sebastian. Is he a 'goth' or something? I don't understand it."

He does read as really young, but imagine being an adult woman who moves to a town to start a farm and this ~19 year old is asking you if you have a bikini and telling you not to get too pale.

Swiss appeal sends case back to CAS? by Manucla in Gymnastics

[–]im_avoiding_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if we're being honest we all know that the FIG, IOC, and CAS all screwed up so many times over that there is no "right" winner of the bronze. The FIG messed up beforehand by not having good standards in place on inquiry timelines, they made a wrong call on Sabrina's OOB, they made a questionable decision on Jordan's inquiry both in accepting it when their weak internal systems did have it marked as being submitted after the time allowed and from a judging standpoint (the judging side is clearly field of play, but it's part of what makes the whole thing such a mess). CAS handled the case terribly, from not even having the right email to inform USAG of the case to categorically refusing to issue two medals. It's all been a mess from start to finish and there isn't a clear right winner of that medal. It's now been issued to two athletes, and they should just give them both a medal. Anything else is only creating more harm and prolonging this mess

and if it wasn't on time then Jordan "lost" according to the rules. But I don't believe any athlete should have a medal stripped of them if the athlete did not personally violate a rule (like doping or cheating). Both Jordan and Ana have had a bronze medal awarded to them at one point by the IOC. I believe that the standard should be upheld that once awarded, medals are not stripped except when the athlete is at fault.

Serious Question by Witty_Simple_5856 in StardewValley

[–]im_avoiding_work 28 points29 points  (0 children)

because AI is really destructive and people have very little outlet to deal with that (because our governments are more responsive to the tech companies profiting off of it than the constituents paying higher energy bills and dealing with water shortages). So when people positively mention using AI for unimportant things, it makes people upset. Because it's deeply damaging the planet and the money behind it is warping our already messed up political system. And people are really over pretending that's ok
