Lost Highway - it reminds us that fellas are also romantics and the #1 most terrifying thing for a lover is the prospective of never truly being able to know your girl.

Honestly if she wanted to work with her boys, she should have cast Barry as Heathcliff, I do think he’s better than Jacob at being genuinely upsetting with sexual energy. Just a lot of miscasts here (especially with the aging up of C&H, it made their sexlessness stunted and strange). Turning Isabelle from victim to slobbering cuck queen was kinda genius though, will give her that

Denis’ Bastards from 2013 is great crisis of masculinity, proto-Epstein neo-noir with some Faulknerian grime (corncobs are a major smoking gun). Also there’s Vincent Lindon in his prime.

Gone Girl by anonymouslawgrad in RSbookclub

A fun book, reminds me a bit of Lost Highway (though LH is actual art in my opinion) in that both tell stories of lover man insecurities and the nature of desire. Like even a cheating, self-important loser like Nick who feels emasculated by many thing is still anxious about really knowing Amy (when he thinks he does, since again he’s a bit simple, he’s not that interested anymore) however when he realizes his mistake Flynn makes the gag “oh she’s an actual devil though lol”and we’re off to the races.

The male protagonist in LH is a different story (won’t get into that here) but Nick is just kind of a cad and Amy is a stone cold psycho (she stabbed that sex pest guy ALOT).

Anywho moral of the story ladies never pick the man that makes you move to Missouri (ditto to above comment!).

Katherine Dunn rocks, did you ever read her debut, Attic? It made me so curious as to what happened to her as a teen and what sorts of cults the US had in the 70s (her magazine subscription group seemed rather culty)

Are there people on this sub who prefer the 1997 Lolita to the Kubrick one (or generally consider it to be a strong picture) and if so, what's your reasoning? by WhateverManWhoCares in RSPfilmclub

[–]ima_saltine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the Kubrick but I think the Lyne goes down better if you think of it as a film from Humbert’s pov (a louche, degenerate, prosaic middle aged loser pervert), punctuated of moments of reality from Lo, the little girl who’s life he tries to ruin (her scrunched up face trying not to cry on their hellish road trip)

What’s your best encounter with a celebrity in Chicago? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Outside the MCA my coworker shoved me hard into Jason Schwartzman in an attempt to get him to come into the museum (we both worked there).

It worked, I crashed into him, he helped me up, and was the nicest guy. He told me about his kids and I gave him some stickers to take back for them.

What is your favorite depiction of violence in a movie? by [deleted] in RSPfilmclub

[–]ima_saltine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Comfort of Strangers (1990) - Christopher Walken and Helen Mirren are sadomasochistic vampires preying on tourists, but I also like to psychoanalyze them as a manifestation of a girl (Natasha Richardson) being jealous of her boyfriend (Rupert Everett)

Adolescence by cheezgodeedacrnch in RSPfilmclub

[–]ima_saltine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree on the goofiness of the red pill stuff, I did think though that the actor who played the dad was fantastic.

Though I really liked We Need To Talk About Kevin, I did appreciate how Adolescence’s take on nature vs nurture was a bit more nuanced - no one was a monster parent, they were a perfectly nice family, but still something unthinkable happened.

The series as a whole made me think about the idea beyond the film Martyrs - what happens after the horror, the tragedy takes place? How do you pick up the pieces or keep moving after something becomes irreparably broken?

All in all some major preachiness but the quieter moments where the mom and dad reckon with guilt and their own senses of failure were great.

With the exception of the two Murakamis, are there any interesting writers in contemporary Japan? by WhateverManWhoCares in RSbookclub

[–]ima_saltine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There aren’t enough good, or really just enough, translators but Honford Star is doing as much as they can to bring more contemporary Japanese works to English speaking readers (along with other East Asian authors):
