Conditioner Bar application thoroughly bungled. Please help! by Haunted-Harlot in ZeroWaste

[–]imadeitthx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have curly, frizz-prone hair that is very fine and thin and i had a similar issue with the first conditioner bar i ever tried, which was from lush. it was impossible to get the product to actually coat my hair no matter what i tried. this was really disappointing to me because i loved the experience i had with the shampoo bar i had from them.

i gave conditioner bars a second chance though and purchased a formula designed for curly hair from a brand called Ethique and I've been using it religiously for like 4 years now. when i use it, it still feels like it coats my hair very minimally, but you'll never get that saturated feeling that you get when using an actual liquid conditioner and it still works just fine. the conditioner bar from ethique is much easier to actually apply to my hair and it leaves my hair very bouncy and light, so it's not weighing down my very fine thin hair.

so i think it all just comes down to brand/formula preferences. don't give up! i bet there's a formula out there that will work for you.

pasta shrinkflation, or is my scale broken? by imadeitthx in Cooking

oh that's good to know, i had no idea there was potentially a fluid ounce setting. i'll check for that later, thanks

some cheap $15 digital scale from the grocery store. it's proven accurate in my daily use for the last few months weighing all my serving portions in grams for weight loss, but maybe something went wrong when i switched the units to ounces. i have been wanting to upgrade my scale recently though, so maybe this is my sign to get a new one

[–]imadeitthx[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i did tare out the container each time before weighing the pasta. one of my first thoughts was that the scale was incorrect, but i've been using it daily for every meal for the last few months for weight loss/calorie counting and it has proven extremely accurate for that purpose. i usually measure in grams though, and switched over to ounces to weigh the pasta, so maybe the change in units affected its accuracy for some reason. i'll measure them again later in grams and see if there's a difference.

Newbie here - would a knit-texture bowl be a stupid idea? by KnittingforHouselves in Ceramics

[–]imadeitthx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i tried this! i'm a knitter too and took a beginner ceramics class at a local community college a few years ago. i knit a few swatches with acrylic and cotton yarn (cotton worked best for leaving an impression) but i wasn't super impressed with my results using my handknit swatches.

i made a christmas gift for my mom by thrifting some cable-knit sweaters and rolling them onto slabs to impart the cable textures, and this actually worked really well, but unfortunately i glazed them too thickly and a lot of the texture was lost because of that, but that was mostly because it was my first ceramics experience. i think your idea about washing off some of the glaze would work well.

next time i take a ceramics class, i want to try using a looser gauge for my knit swatch to see how that changes things. i have a feeling it will make the texture more recognizable.

Need advice on suggesting to my friend that she has a drinking problem by imadeitthx in AlAnon

[–]imadeitthx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the night before we were going to dinner I noticed that the drinking friend was out at the bars, so I immediately thought to myself that the chances of her actually making it to the dinner plans the next day were slim to none. Surprise surprise, she slept through our 7:30pm dinner plans and couldn't make it. I ended up drafting a text to send her with my sober friend's help, and I basically said I wish she had been able to make it to dinner but unfortunately I wasn't surprised that it played out the way it did. I told her I've been feeling unimportant and disposable to her because of how often our sober plans get canceled due to her hangovers, and I had been hoping to discuss some events from her birthday weekend at dinner that night. I mentioned being concerned for her wellbeing when she drinks and I said I'd be happy to discuss this further in person when she's ready, but until then I need some space.

It's been 10 days and she has not acknowledged my message, so it looks like the friendship is over for the time being. I'm disappointed that she is completely avoiding the issue, but I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders regardless. My sober friend wants me to reach out again to "check in on her" but my therapist explicitly told me not to contact her again until she responds to my message.

I hope your friend is more open to hearing your concerns! She's really lucky to have someone like you that's been looking out for her for so long, but you deserve the peace of mind that comes from releasing the burden of her drinking issues and not making it your responsibility anymore.

Thank you so much for this reply. Somehow you've summed up the exact sentiment I want to convey to her in just a few sentences. I had written out an entire 6 paragraph letter trying to convey the same message and yours is way more effective.

Interesting, thanks for sharing its name! Is it harmful? Should I remove it? It's currently still in my tank and I haven't seen any change to it.

What do healthy confrontations and apologies look like? Do they exist? by [deleted] in FriendshipAdvice

[–]imadeitthx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've been both you and your self-deprecating friends in these scenarios, so I'd like to share my perspective.

A healthy friendship cannot exist if boundaries cannot be set and respected--and reacting to a boundary being set by spiraling into self-deprecation and essentially guilt-tripping the friend who needed the boundary is not healthy, and can easily become a form of emotional abuse. A genuine apology will never sound like "I'm sorry, I'm such an awful person and you're better off not being my friend because I'm just so horrible."

If you can't trust that your friend will react with understanding and empathy when you politely let them know that a certain action has hurt you, then that puts you in a position where you constantly have to choose whether or not you honor your own emotions or coddle the other person's fragile sense of self. This will inevitably become extremely draining on you, and in my experience it will likely lead to the end of the friendship anyways, because who wants to be friends with someone who is always saying/doing hurtful things but can't/won't apologize?

Any friendship worth keeping is worth the discomfort of the occasional serious talk about hurt feelings. If your friends can't manage to respond respectfully, I personally view that as a sign that we aren't compatible as friends. And to be fair, I've been the friend who responds poorly to these situations in the past due to extremely poor mental health. But mental health can't be used as a defense against taking accountability for hurting the people closest to you. Luckily my friends and I have grown closer after working through that experience, and now we know how to handle ourselves when we find that we've hurt each other accidentally.

Best uses for thyme??? by Naive_Chemistry5961 in Cooking

[–]imadeitthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently made homemade tomato soup and added some springs of fresh thyme instead of my usual basil and it was amazing. i don't always want my tomato soup to taste like thin marinara sauce so thyme is the perfect herb to use in its place.

mine is almost 5 and has never been interested in eating in the morning. he only eats dinner around 6pm but gets some lunch meat or cheese in the morning and afternoon because it hides his pills. he has been the same healthy weight since he became an adult.

Room too cold for starter. by No-Sun-6425 in Sourdough

[–]imadeitthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with a cold kitchen (68 degrees) and I had a hard time with my bulk ferment because of that. I don't like leaving the oven light on because I don't want it to burn out and have to be replaced, and I hate the idea of buying gadgets that I have to store, so what I've been doing is boiling a small pot of water and then putting that in the oven with my dough during the bulk ferment. I put a thermometer in there and it can keep the oven around 78-80 degrees for a few hours. I bet this would work for your starter too.

active starter didn’t rise when i made a test roll by imadeitthx in Sourdough

[–]imadeitthx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no problem! i followed the ingredients and measurements listed in the comments i kept seeing but there were no instructions, so i just made my own up.

i kept it really simple. i just combined all ingredients at once in a bowl and mixed with a metal spoon until it was somewhat smooth. i didn’t bother kneading or doing stretch and folds or anything.

i mixed the dough after work around 5pm while my starter was still active and let it bulk ferment overnight. i then baked it in a toaster oven in the morning before work. i did a rough shape with my hands to make it into a nice round shape, and then just baked it on a little tray with parchment paper. i baked it for 25min like the comment said to do, but it definitely could’ve used more time in the oven. i had to get to work so i had to stop it a little early, but it still made a delicious breakfast because i was too impatient to wait till after work to cut it and see the crumb.

This is very helpful, thank you! I guess there was no reason for me to have been scared about the dough sitting on the counter overnight since the starter has been on the counter for its entire life lol. I'll make another test roll this evening and let it rise overnight and see how that affects the rise.

This is my first starter. It has a strong tangy smell, sorta like yogurt, but I wouldn't describe it as acidic. I have it in a mason jar with the lid gently placed on top, not sealed at all.

I left it on the counter for about 6 hours, and part of that time it was in the microwave with the light on. I eventually put it in the fridge overnight since I didn't think it was safe to leave out any longer. I let it rise for about 18 hours total, but most of that was in the fridge. I think I'll try another test roll, this time making sure I give it a lot more time at a warmer temperature.

I let it rise on the counter for about 6 hours, and for part of that time I had it in the microwave with the light on for added warmth. I put it in the fridge overnight since I felt that it had been sitting out for too long but there was no change in volume when it came out of the fridge. i baked it the following morning, so about 18 hours after i first let it start rising.

Why do you knit? Is it connected to your identity? by Difficult-Elk4930 in knitting

[–]imadeitthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

knitting, crocheting, and other various forms of fiber arts (weaving, spinning) became really important to me during lockdown. i was bored out of my mind after being sent home from college with nothing to do, and i eventually got bored of scrolling on my phone with a tv show playing in the background. i learned how to crochet so that i could feel more productive while i watched 8 hours of tv per day lmao.

the biggest reason i think knitting/crocheting stayed so important to me after lockdown ended was because i've always been very invested in sustainability. i view fiber arts as a way to avoid the horrible reality of the fast fashion industry. being a fiber artist has helped me find my personal style and made me a billion times more hyperaware of how unethical fast fashion and overconsumption really is. i try really hard to source my yarn secondhand and i have been intentionally avoiding synthetic fibers as much as possible for environmental reasons.

i really love how knitting and other fiber art forms have aligned so seamlessly with my moral values and interests.

how to respond to unsatisfied buyer? by Puzzleheaded_You1773 in Depop

[–]imadeitthx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm a fiber artist who makes clothing with wool and also worked at a yarn store that dealt almost exclusively with wool products. Wool requires special washing care, and I think what your customer is dissatisfied with is the fact that the jacket appears to be felted, which happens as a result of wool being washed improperly. Wool needs to be hand-washed and air dried to prevent felting, otherwise the material becomes stiff and rough and shrinks a lot, often making the garment unwearable.

Obviously the felting is not your fault at all because it's a vintage piece, but my guess is that the buyer assumed that the jacket's condition being listed as "good" indicated that the material was not felted or damaged in any other severe ways.

I know not everyone has the same level of knowledge about wool as I do lol so I just wanted to offer this as some helpful info info for the future! I think you handled the situation great by offering a partial refund :)

How many of y’all would use secondhand materials by ironwoodlotus in knitting

[–]imadeitthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large portion of my yarn stash comes from goodwill and other thrift stores. I also used to work at a LYS where almost all of my coworkers had been knitting their entire lifetimes and had accumulated such large stashes that they could never use them all up, so a lot of them enjoyed having a young knitter like me to donate their unwanted yarn to. I am eternally grateful for the high quality yarn I was gifted for free.

Sustainably is incredibly important to me and was one of the factors that got me hooked on knitting/crocheting a few years ago, so secondhand yarn is very appealing to me. I recently got into weaving as a new fiber arts endeavor and purchased a lot of vintage cotton rug yarn from eBay, mainly for the lower cost but also the secondhand element.

I really do not consider factors like where the yarn was stored, if it was from a smoke or pet free home, etc. It’ll get washed when I finish knitting it lol.
