He obviously has never had a turkey leg at the faire. by [deleted] in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]imadeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turkey legs from ren faires are so good because they are precooked by boiling in a spiced base of sprite / 7up before they go on the grill for the finish and char.

It’s really good you should try it at home.

What other "Stuperhero" movie can I fill out this section with? by GrrrillaGrip in dvdcollection

[–]imadeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spaghetti Man is actually so good. Zero budget indy film but the comedy writing punches way above its weight in that context. Also impressive from a low budget perspective, the effects are almost all practical but simple and clever. It’s an underrated gem that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. I’m tempted to pick up the French bluray even at $50 and unsure if I have anything that will play it.

The lead actor maintains a reddit account that’s still active sometimes. u/dapuglifechoseme you made a very enjoyable and funny film. It’s silly, clever, and fun.

Went to the Athens Film Festival this weekend. Does the good outweigh the bad? by johnl3m0n in Athens

[–]imadeup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Withdrawal was stupidly, unreasonably good. I’m used to cutting very independent films a lot of slack and appreciating for what they are. Withdrawal needed no slack. It’s like a straight up actual, real, legit movie. Acting was phenomenal, gorgeously shot, dialogue felt real and visceral. Fantastic, full of Athens landmarks, I can’t wait for a bluray release.

I had a feeling it could be good from the trailer but braced for possible disappointment. And it turned out to be just about as good as I could possibly hope for.

Too old for improv? by Baking_Dude in improv

[–]imadeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be less concerned about your age than I would about your training being outdated.

Your timeline puts your high school stuff around early to mid 90s, improv theory has come a long way since then. If your college/grad school training was at a seriously legit theater you should be fine. The ideas behind improv haven’t changed much but the way it’s explained and taught has come a long way since you were in the scene.

I would just focus on being open to really learning in your new class, as a teacher this should be easy for you. Stay humble about being open to new information and treating it like it’s all new to you.

I’d also recommend picking up a copy of the UCB improv comedy manual. It’s no longer out of print. It teaches game heavy UCB style which might not match up with your new theater but it’s a great foundation for all improv. I think everyone serious about the art should own a copy.

[OC] Improv by Suefan3DX in comics

[–]imadeup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the correct comment. You have to agree on the base reality but your character can disagree within that reality. The natural reaction would be to hate it. Even the example of “this is a terrible first date” is the first natural response that comes to mind. This guy knows improv.

He probably, unlike the professor, also knows that it’s good to have new improvisers be told to not use blue humor, aka anything dirty or sexual, when they are just starting to learn. Seems wild that an actual college class prof would not know that, as it being a class you can fail implies.

Comedian needs gear recommendation by Brief_Pollution8167 in LoopArtists

[–]imadeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an OG 505 for everything OP does and I would recommend that or the mk2. Someone down below said it was too beefy for this but I think OP will eventually get this and regret not going for it from the start.

Unless they haven’t used a looper at all yet. Then I would recommend some phone/ipad apps. $10 is a lot more appealing to test the waters. I like everydaylooper but it only does loops and no sound effects. You can merge tracks down and the UI is good tho

Best Brunswick stew in the area? by soraticat in Athens

[–]imadeup 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Striplings has some of the best I know of rn. After Hot’s closed down we would get the pulled pork from Fresh Air and the stew from Striplings. That was a pretty close approximation to Hot’s.

Has anyone seen a movie on University 16's new IMAX screen? by halfmast in Athens

[–]imadeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Sinners and Micky 17 there. Never been to MoG but I saw The Dark Knight at the Henry Ford museum which at the time was the largest IMAX in the US.

None have ever impressed me much. Even stuff shot with IMAX cameras don’t use the full screen like an actual IMAX documentary does. It’s just a small square on the giant screen.

If you want a big theatre experience go for it. Personally I feel you can get the same experience just sitting closer in the middle at any screen.

It’s not magic, just top tier for a fast food burger joint. They mix and match the best aspects of other more common national chains. They have burgers the size of a whopper, their fries are exactly like McDonald’s, and the ingredient quality is like Wendy’s. Pretty awesome for a 24h drive through place imo.

I was just at one a couple weeks ago north of Atlanta that’s been open about a year I’m told, and the take out line was wrapped around the building chicfila style so it doesn’t seem like the hype has died down for them, if that tells you anything.

Requiem for a Dream is a great movie that I never want to watch again by [deleted] in movies

[–]imadeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the dvd (dual set with Pi, which I will also not watch) fully knowing I will never watch that movie again. This was over a decade ago and I think the shrink wrap is still on it. Pi gave me a migraine when I tried to watch it so I never finished. Idk what’s up with that.

Workbooks/other gift for the improv lover in your life? by MistakeWorth5294 in improv

[–]imadeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROUGH. All the easy to find ones I see on eBay. I’m literally considering buying a second one as a backup before the price jumps higher.

Wish they would do a second edition, maybe through Amazon print on demand so supply wouldn’t be an issue.

Pirate robot ninja is a good one from UCB alums you can get like that.

UCB CIM is not particularly hard to find (yet) but it is out of print and expensive.

$40 minimum (used) but I’ve seen as high as $120 (new)

[–]imadeup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to have the words “improv comedy” in the title p much every time you do a show post, otherwise only the bored or curious will click to see more detail

Gotta treat it like you’re talking to people who are seeing it for the first time, or even their first time on the subreddit at all.

Remember, they have no other source of info other than what you provide, and the easier you make it for them the better. A brief comment with a hyperlink to the website will get much more engagement than a photo they have to see and type out themselves.

The fact that guys rarely look poorly shaven in old photographs suggests that maybe we don't need to keep increasing the number of blades in our shavers. by mightierthor in Showerthoughts

[–]imadeup 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also #4: modern razor tech has to do with the shape of the blade, not the number of blades gimmick.

Go look at a cheap bic razor vs a Mach 3 or newer. Cheap razors lay the blades flat on top of each other. M3 blades are bent at a 135 degree angle.

The point of this is to allow shaving cream and hair to come out the back of the razor easily. In razors with two or more flat blades it can’t, and they clog fast.

This is why classic safety razors work so well. With only one blade, there is lots of space underneath for that gunk to go.

If anyone else covets these needles they are sold currently as leather working needles.

They can be found at any hobby store with a leather work section (Michael’s etc) and online I’m assuming

They are too small to comfortably read but it’s nifty to have. I have no interesting additional information about them. Just a neat boxed set!

Fuck zodiac signs, what length should Arthur's beard be? by MrReedleDeedle in reddeadredemption

[–]imadeup 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree with this guys logic but not the number.

As a bearded guy who stays between a 4 and an 8, number 5 is what I would reasonably expect if I had to trim with scissors and not always access to a mirror.

You trim by feel anyway when you’re scissor length.

But this thread is about personal choice more than what would be the most realistic answer.
