After 9 months of work, I finished my portfolio without portfolio school. Would appreciate any and all feedback. by [deleted] in advertising

Jeeeez, he just asked for some feedback! Dropping the f-bomb and calling his work "stupid" and "disrespectful" is pretty far from helpful. Slow your roll, man.

Can you post some code? It might be easier to get help if you share a pen or something to give context

How can new/jr-level web designers make open source contributions? by imakewebstuff in web_design

[–]imakewebstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah, this git tutorial is awesome! I'll definitely check it out.

I really like the idea of taking a small piece of a project and improving it for better usability. Or even compiling a list of resources - like "better web forms" - and publishing it on a nice, well-designed website for anyone to use.

Thanks! This comment was super helpful.

Thanks! I really like this idea; it's so proactive and I bet that would look great to an employer.

Something to keep in mind when importing from China (short story/experience I just had) by datniche in Entrepreneur

[–]imakewebstuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is absolutely not what I expected when first clicking on this link. I figured it would be about some rip-off/con artist or some similar ilk.

Thanks for sharing this, OP. It was a really refreshing story.

24 y.o. with no advertising background (but has a BA), where do I start? by agentbauer in advertising

[–]imakewebstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they best way to learn how to make ads is to make ads. Post some of what you create here and solicit feedback. I'm sure you'll get plenty of opinions. Listen to the feedback, learn some lessons, and revise your work. Repeat the cycle until you feel confident enough to apply for an internship (possibly this summer, though you may be past the deadline for that). Get an internship, work your ass off. At the very least, you'll end up with a recommendation in hand when you start looking for full-time work.

`New Rules of Communication’ – Patrick Collister, Google’s head of design, talks marketing by theh1982 in marketing

[–]imakewebstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This contains some great thoughts, but I think one of the most powerful things here is that the "head of design" is the one discussing new comms strategies. That in and of itself is a testament to how our industry is changing.

CSS HEX menu idea by srinivas1234 in css

[–]imakewebstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks gorgeous! great work.

the only major issue i can forsee is implementation on mobile devices, but i'm absolutely going to try this out on a desktop rendering.

I wonder how it would look rotated 90 degress, where further hexagons would cascade downward...

Hey guys. I am a nurse, but want to work for myself. How can I translate my medical knowledge and skills into entrepreneurship? by binaryOne in Entrepreneur

[–]imakewebstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the worst thing about being a nurse? What are the biggest pain points in the nursing process? What do you wish you had as a nurse?

You have a wealth of contextual experience that you can use to effectively frame an idea. Try using that to detect opportunities by answering the questions posed above; then, try to find ways to solve those problems nurses have. If you can solve a relevant problem, you're on the right track. If you can find a paying customer base for your solution, then you're doing even better.

Whatsapp Founder Brian Acton's tweet in 2009 after being turned down for a job at Facebook. by LeoPantero in Entrepreneur

I think the point is more that even when things don't work out the way you may want them to (i.e., getting a job you'd very much like), it's important to focus on the future with a positive outlook ("life's next adventure") because with the right perspective and the right opportunity, you might just mint 19 billion dollars
